One of my colleagues started this idea off, while I was trying to describe EVE to him.
His comment was 'So suicide pirates ram your ship'
That got me thinking!
The canon says that the shields on ships & structures mean they repel each other like trying to push together the same poles on 2 magnets!
So why wouldn't the Sanshas, who are notorious for badly treating their pilots, develop a module that reverses the polarity of the their ships shields to allow for them to ram other ships!
In game terms it would mean that a 'Suicide Ganker' could use his ship as a weapon.
- The chance of it working in the first place would be related to relative difference in agility between the 2 ships. (Boils down to a Frigate could hit a Battleship, but not the other way around) - After the collision! The damage would be related to relative speed of the 2 ships, the impacting ship's hit points , the angle of impact & the difference between the ship agilities . - The total damage would then be divided equally between the 2 vessels - Mitigation of damage would use the total of resists across armour & hull for each type, applied to the total armour+hull hit points for that ship - The downside is that any excess damage to the suicider's ship would be passed straight to the his Pod inside, meaning he could well lose Pod and his clone. - While the target would be able to jettison before the same happened to his Pod, due his realisation of what is happening before impact and his self preservation kicking in.
Apart from the chance for the suicider to lose a clone.
Other restrictions could be:
- The module is it is only a Shasha Loyalty Point item (Due to them not wanting the Empires to get one for research into a counter) - It can only fit small ships. -Losing clones this way could have a negative effect on the pilot that means he needs an illegal booster to be able to do it first place or needs more and more boosters every time he does it - Fitting it is horrendous which means the suicide is the ships only real option as well as not that proof against incoming fire.
Other Pirate groups could have a similar modules.
But due to them having a bit more concern for their pilots they don't totally reverse the polarity but instead just neutralise it. The result is that shields would also be included in the resists & hit point calculations for damage mitigation for both ships.
I expect this is not the first time this has been suggested, apologies if it has
I look forward to the plaudits or brick bats |

Soooooo... what would happen when a bunch of people get a whole bunch of cheap ships in throwaway alts and decide to pay Jita a visit? "Just because I seem like an idiot, doesn't mean I am one." ~Unknown |

One word....... LAG !!!
From a programming point of view collisions are a f'in nightmare.
Also if both ships take the same about of damage a frigate is gonna insta pop off a battle ship and do NOOOOO damage at all. |
