Just got linked to this. I have to say this is absolutely stunning compositing work, and I'm impressed these guys had very little in way of resources and still pulled this off.
Just... hats off...

Why is that some people on no budget can do something so true to Half Life yet whenever someone spends millions making a film adaptation of some game they completely ruin it?

Well, the majority of a film budget won't go into a script. Scriptwriters most likely won't have extensively played the game / read the book of which they're writing about, and as such won't be able to quite capture the feel it was going for.
The people making this obviously have played half-life to death and are long-standing people within the community, and as such they can capture how half-life feels perfectly. That and they used alot of the models and textures from the game, wheras a movie wouldn't. They have alot of money and as such would have any CGI done to a higher standard, but again, the feel can easily be lost here. The ideas would go through concept artists before reaching the 3d artists, and at each step there is a chance of losing yet more of the feel.
It's a shame, but once so many people are involved in a project, it's easy to lose key elements.
However, Valve (Doug Lombardi, specifically) have said that they will never make a Movie adaption of the Half-Life series. They believe that Half-Life should always be from the perspective of the person watching / playing, and the actions of the main character should be a direct result of the person watching / playing. Obviously games are the best medium for this, so they won't stray.
I sure am in a typing mood at the moment 族---族

answer's easy. these actors had a clue about the game. "The Rock" and the rest of the hollywood groupies in DooM had no clue about the game.

Because they have no managers, accountants and people who for some reason have actual power in a company and think that they have to spout their stupid bland ideas on anything and everything, regardless of them not understanding the subject.

Large amounts of cardboard, green paint and mock-up uniforms don't cost that much (that's all they would need to buy, presuming they already had cameras + the software needed for their line of work). |
