If you are getting wtfpwned by a destroyer in a frigate, you are doing it wrong. Cruisers, if the guy's fit anything like 'intelligently' and not strictly for ratting, you are probably going to die. So go after young players who don't know better.
The vast majority of time, a noob destroyer or cruiser is fit with as many long range guns as the noob can fit (usually lazors, because they don't use ammo..duh), plus a single armor repairer or shield booster (sometimes both ).
Typical frigate vs destroyer engagement is usually something along the lines of:
a) Warp to belt, the guy is 20km off..you burn towards him, scream YARRR but forget you are in a pod and your mouth fills with pod goo. Ignore the choking and keep going. b) You get within 7.5km and flip the scram and then the web (important, scram first) and start to pummel him to death. c) He starts to fire back, you laugh as the guns can't track because you're moving at a stupid rate of speed in a nice tight orbit. d) Now is the point while you are killing him to open up negotiations. Turn the guns off at about half structure. Demand that he heave-to and stop firing and repairing. Use single shots from guns to add to the 'convince' factor. Pull your directional scanner in to a half million km or so and if anything shows up on it, finish him off and GTFO.
Dead destroyer or successful ransom. Easy. Now, if the guy is prepared for you, it kind of happens more like this:
a) Warp to belt, he's been warping to belt at like 70km...you burn towards him screaming YARRRR at the top of your lungs. b) The guy locks you up and starts peppering you at long range...destroyer guns hurt..maybe you should have come in at a more oblique angle.. But you are determined, keep going. c) The guy starts to run directly away from you, keeping the range open. You are still determined, but..hmm..those long range guns hurt. d) At 7.5km flip your scram on, the prepared guy further has put a web and scrambler on the destroyer, which he helpfully turns on so as you get closer, you are plenty hurt, and suddenly not so speedy...this is bad. e) The guy in the destroyer also seems to have fit a big-ass plate or extender...this is going to get ugly as you dip into structure...*kapow* you die.
In scenario II.. Mistakes made:
a) Okay, you are 70km away...warp out and back. If you can't get on him in a reasonable amount of time, he's going to just warp off if he's ill prepared, and if he sticks around, he figures he can take you. Anyone showing that much confidence in a flying coffin is probably dangerous. (Or terminally dumb... up to you) b) Hitting 'orbit 500m' when too far away is a really bad..bad idea when approaching a destroyer or cruiser. Their guns will punch big holes in you at range when you have no transversal. You might lose the guy, but the second he gets lock, come in at an angle. Going almost straight at him is a recipe for much hurt. c) The guy knows enough about his ship to try and keep range...Maybe going after this one isn't the smartest idea. If you haven't bailed on this engagement by now... you are doing it wrong. (You probably should have bailed by step a or b) d) If you got to this point, and you find yourself scrambled and webbed, you are probably going to die. You picked the wrong guy. Try to break off or, keep going in and pray he's all dps and 0 tank. e) Right, if you got to this point and he's fit any kind of a buffer, say good bye to your cheap ship. You had a chance to get away at step c. You had a chance to get away at d...now, you're just asking for it unless you get a special miracle.
Good luck..hopefully this has been helpful :)

Back in the day, my friend and eve "mentor" always suggested getting damn good with frigates and small ships before going to bigger ships. I think i got into an interceptor before a battlecruiser tbh. There are things you can learn in frigates when you are a noob that is harder or near impossible to learn at any other time. Frigates are great, AF's are actually good now! I haven't flown a ceptor in a while though...

Originally by: Colonel Cornbread Then how would one ransom anyone? Most of the time when you're fighting someone it's always at a planet, belt, etc... does belt count as a celestial?
Engage and while engaging and keeping an eye on local you convo the guy and tell him the price to live. Don't do it in local, you do not want to many witnesses! When your wallet flashes, check first if the amount was right and then
A) Let him go (my version) B) Kill him anyway (I don't like it, but you play your game like you want)
Please no beating of the dead ransom hono(u)r horse
P.S.: The engaging while convoing thing needs practice - if he has drones and you're in a frig, wait til you killed the drones (tough job) and then start the negotiations!

Are you implying that I'm suppposed to fit a MWD?
When I played my trial, it was before the nanonerf so basically all frigates had MWD's fitted - then after the nanonerf and when I came back... a lot of piracy guides had changed to saying 'fit an afterburner'.

If you are pirating then you are likely in Low Sec. If you are in Low Sec then nine out of ten players are pirates or wannabes. Those nine out of ten players whom happen to be pirates, are all hunting that one cearbearing non pirate and You.
Nine out of ten times, those other pirates will have friends or be good enough to handle some noob in a lonely frig. Not very good odds if you are a new player trying to be a pirate in a frig. Meaning there is a lot of PvP.. Which ends up being Pirate on Pirate man love or just painful butt Piracy.
In short if you want to fly a frig then get your self a friend or two, otherwise you will likely get Yarrr aruse ganked most of the time. Not to say you can't solo in a frig in low sec, but yarrr odds are stacked against you.
Having a small frig gang of say three Rifters, greatly increases the chances that you can attack the other ship vs having to let it go because it's too big, but of course it never hurts to have a friends with a cruiser to add in some DPS. Hence the reason everyone starts out wanting to solo then ends up in a gank gang just like everyone else.
I must state that nine out of ten posts on forums, specifically with stats, are made up BS pulled out of a Donkeys Yarraruse, however that never stopped me.

seeing as how destroyers get a HUGE tracking bonus, that doesn't happen. against cruisers maybe, but destroyers no. -+- let's break out the shotguns, we're going to town

2pt scramblers now disable mwd, and webs now web for between 50-60% speed.
since a rifter will be going 1100-1300 with a tech 2 afterburner, a mwd is not necessarily a requirement and since lots of people fit 2pt scramblers to defend against fast movers (myself included) you are generally better off with an afterburner -+- let's break out the shotguns, we're going to town

Find a good corp where u can learn from the next best, ASAP. then you instantly start to quietly scout around for a bigger fish to learn from But yeah, get in a corp asap. I've tried countless different groups, until I finally found the place I am in today. Fat and satisfied I've become, with a great bunch of friends and good pvpers around me. But the journey here has not been without a lot of nice experiences from different kinds of failure and sometimes even wins.

After reading this thread to get some more perspective at how one could win in PVP and going around lowsec as well as highsec (dang it, almost got an Iteron IV and a Osprey from canflipping!)... the way I'm seeing this, piracy is a lot more about luck for finding easy kills. PvE fitted crap can be killed by anything rigged for PvP... however, what happens in PvP fit vs PvP fit? Purely about skill / fit / ship / just a bit of luck?

So... yeah, fleeted up with a guy I had been talking in local of the system I kept hunting people in (yes, I was taking a risk...) and it ended up getting his friend in the fleet and we killed two caracals and a cormorant in around 30 mins, it was a nice streak of kills until a Pilgrim came and killed one of the others and we just docked and... well the night is still continuing, so I don't know what's going to happen next!

Edited by: Waylan Yutani on 05/04/2009 11:14:19 frigates rock - but you have to get real close and be afterburned. Im not going to disclose any tactics i use..
frig vs dessie.. fight goes to the dessie due to its high tracking capbility
frig vs inty - if the frig can catch the inty and disable its mwd, the frig wins
frig vs cruiser - frig wins hands down, unless you get spammed by drones or nossed, or you are facing the dreaded rax-undergun fit.
Best for you is to start training assault frigs - you get a lot of ship for minimum sp. I got 27 mill sp, and i use assault frigs more than anything else. Dont give up on frigate sizede ships - i killed a zealot in an ishkur a ruppy in an enyo - start killing drones right away, if he uses light drones against you.
oh, and one last note - learn to use your scanner, its one of the most important tools of piracy/pvp
