Awesome Idea!
At some point I will have to set up a match between me and Rev. That and Im sure Kuma would love some pay back for your first meeting with him.
Anyway good luck!

Signed up for it.
Hope this kicks off for you mate, seems like a decent idea. Would be nice to have an easy way to import everyone into a buddy list or something though, hard trying arrange times and location through forum PMs.
If anyone is in the Aussie TZ (GMT+10) then let me know and I will fire a few rounds off at you.

Have you looked into challenges? You could also advertise that you're available for 1v1 in whatever region(s) you live through the message board. A buddy list will be introduced shortly.
Thanks for your input.

Public challenges have been introduced! You may now broadcast challenges from the "public challenges" section in the war room. Thanks to everyone who suggested this feature. |

This is the way it should be done, player run, a loss is still a loss and no crappy battlegrounds a'la wow, plus now CCP can fire the guy trying to code that crap into the game and hire someone to fix bugs, win win.
Good luck with the project.

Solid idea.
One suggestion, visit www.teamwarfare.com and www.caleague.com
These guys have been around for more then 10 years and they know a lot about online competitive gaming. They used a default and basic sets of rules for every game and perhaps some of them might be valuable to you. However, keep up the good work, I think itĘs a brilliant idea.

Edited by: Neesa Corrinne on 11/06/2009 17:10:12 It looks like you spent a lot of work setting this all up, unfortunately it has all the earmarks of something doomed to fail.
The matches are at the discretion of the two parties to set up and complete and the only way have a match entered into the database and have one party claim a win and the other party claim a loss.. which is great and wonderful until you have the guys who will join and claim they didn't lose a match that they did.
Someone will provide a killmail, the liar will provide a faked counter-killmail and claim that the other killmail is a fake. Or two guys will agree to fight in their souped up battleships in some lowsec system, only to find that one side has all his buddies sitting by in recons for an easy kill.. blah blah blah.
Basically the rules have enough loopholes to fly a C-5 through. Every fight should have an impartial witness at the very least, and the optimal solution is to pick a solar system and require that all fights be conducted there through the same game mechanic such as can flipping or whatever.
Finally, there's nothing in the rules outlining what constitutes a "win". Are fights to the hull, to the death, till someone types "Nancy Pelosi fell down the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down" first. If different people have set different conditions for their matches, then the rankings become skewed because matches where the participants fight to the death will complain that their match is worth more points than the two sissies who fought till their tanks broke. |

Unfortunately there are no ways around the problems you describe that would not defeat the purpose of EVE Arena, Neesa. It exists to facilitate combat, not make it harder to arrange than it already is. Consider being ranked a bonus.

consider having the victory system requiring both parties to input their outcome.
aka, player A and player B setup a duel. fair, clean fight, both had fun. player A wins, and hits a "i win" box. player B then must go to his profile and check off a "i lose" button.
this would also work if something wasnt decided fairly
A and B are fighting again, but B brings along 5 buddies. B obviously wins. B checks "victory". A, however, does not, and keeps the duel from closing with no decision until a timer goes off (perhaps 2-3 days) that auto closes the duel.
OFC, youll have the sore loser who wont vote, but you wont have people faking stuff. |

Though I see your point, Neesa also has a point. Be careful not to let people's nay saying ruin the reputation of your site. For instance, even if 90% of the fights are vetted for perfectly and there's a clear winner/loser, all it takes is that one disputed match for the forums to be lit up in a cacophony of flames that will eat it's reputation alive.
I suggest offering an API based service. Not I said "offer", you offer up your api so that eve-arena can track killmails. Also, define a win. I'd say all pilots in pods, popping a pilot's pod is bad form but not punishable, make that clear so n00bs won't hold you accountable for fighting that one ass who sent em back to a clone.
Also, I'd suggest making a betting system. This would get more iskies into the arena and therefore more interest. I'd totally bet on matches. There are plenty of pilots out there with fraps, have them video the most popular matches.
Each of those last suggestions would help the popularity quite a bit. And though it seems like more trouble to get involved into, sometimes that's not as important as the motivation to sign up. Right now you need to motivate people to sign up. So make it sound really effin' awesome, even if you have to lie about developing features you haven't even started on yet.
Anyhow, I think this is a great idea, if there was betting involved I'd sign up me and my posse.

Thanks for your suggestions, Attrezzo. I like the idea of bets a lot, however I am not sure the concept is mature enough to incorporate it. Offering pilots the ability to submit their API keys is also a solid idea.
Right now my primary concern is to communicate the existence of EVE Arena to the players I'm really catering for. Most of them don't read these forums, and as such I am at loss. I sent CCP a mail some time ago asking whether they'd be interested in advertising the service somehow, but was dissapointed to realize that the representative hadn't even bothered to begin reading my mail. I recently submitted a lead to the "Players News Center" - it is my hope that they will consider to write about it. It is the only remaining way I can think of to advertise the concept to the players EVE Arena caters for. |
