Okay, I'm probably not the only one feeling like this, but DUST 514 is starting to really scare me. I mean, we're introducing a BF2 style game into a LONG-TERM world (every move in our EVE Online World is thought through long and hard... well every successful move) and now we're opening the doors to kids who's mothers are trying to keep them busy ($15/month isn't a lot to keep Jimmy from swinging from the curtains again); who intern will treat this without regard for the space they're in.
So I thought, there's gotta be some balancing then right? Like maybe Orbital Bombardment by Pod Pilots that own the systems? Or carriers being able to tank "CTF points" by sending more troops down to the surface. Wouldn't it suck to suddenly see your space has changed into the hands of others?
CCP has to have thought of the implications of releasing EVE into the console world. Shouldn't the mercs have to train to shoot better or use better weapons? Train to call air strikes? Train to provide medical aid?
I just feel that you can't mix a "drop in and shoot" sorta game with a "320 days for my Neglfar" sorta game. I hope that they do go through with it - to add some fun for us now looking for consoles, BUT with good balancing (orbital tanking, bombing, sniping etc)
Or, we are doomed to be at the will of small frustrated teens... WoW! :P

liV3wIRe, (damn your names annoying to type) i doubt CCP would make it so that the console gamers will have more than a small amount of control over 0.0 SOV. also, it will not be jump in and play, CCP said that merc type corps (in dust) will be hired by alliances to fight.

Min = Live, but live is my non-used alt.
I understand that they'll be hired, but CCP is no doubt out to capture a bit of the gaming console's market with DUST. They can't make it a game where you log on and wait for 3 hours before you can go fight because no one wants to hire you. (here's hoping they do!) I'm looking at this from a marketing/profit margin angle instead of a "whats best for our gamers" because if it was a "whats best for our gamers" then we wouldn't be looking at a console game and instead it would be a PC game or fat expansion pack to EVE Online.
I'm sure that this game has good intentions, but the question "who will be the major chunk of our market" seems to be distorted. Not all EVE Online players have access to X-Boxes and most don't want to play it anyway (hence we're on PC), but some countries don't support X-Box online functionality anyway!
I just hope it doesn't turn into a highschool hang out game.

The problem is aswell that there will be no real time connection. Well in this video Hilmir says there will be no real time chat between Dust and Eve so really we cannot work together at the same time to reach goals. This is the only side i dont like.
If we was able to work together in real time i think the connection between the 2 games would not be as scary.

I have been closely following the threads about dust and I am sort of excited as to how it will all pan out. I play FPS as well as play EVE and will definately trying out this game to see how it fairs.
Certain details about dust make me wonder how exactly it will play. For example how will a game pan out when it is truly a global FPS? For example how well will a battle between a UK merc group and one in say china play when there will be a ping difference between the two teams of many hundreds of ms?
How will they make the game instantly immersive (as it will simply have to be for a FPS game) and as the OP says fit into the balance of EVE?
For now there is plenty to chew on, and more than anything am wondering when i can expect to get my hands on the game?

Originally by: Calleb Most importantly for a FPS how exactly will CCP be trying to remove hackers? It is a big problem on pretty well all FPS games and if dust becomes over run with the vermin it could make a mockery of system soverinty. I for one would not want this to happen.
With it being released on console hackers are not a problem.

If only there were 3rd party real-time apps that let us communicate via voice.

Or failing that, some kind of text. Ideally we'd also need a way for persistent text to be shared as well.

I was mainly aiming at the fact we could not join in the battles from eve.

Why would you need real time chat? Once the DUST team is on the ground and fighting the last thing they want is someone who can't even see the battlefield breaking into the com stream telling them what to do. Basically there is no need for real time communications because, from the very VERY limited information we have, there is currently no immediate plan for real time interaction between the games.
Everything else can be happily co-ordinated with COSMOS, or other more persistant communication methods, which will integrate communities between the dusties and us pod pilots.

EVE is complex. This is why we play it and love it. It's not a simplified skill game like WoW has become (my friends in the office are complaining about that :P Suckers!)
I think we have the right to be involved in DUST if DUST is going to influence EVE online.

As this is a general discussion, I am voicing my concerns that could possibly occur. If we want to get factual, we'd all need some concrete evidence to back up everything. In that case, what I am saying is speculation but it doesn't mean we shouldn't talk about it.

Who says we won't be?
I don't have much information about it, but from what I've seen, they make mention only of us supplying mercs with isk and them going and fighting... thats not very involved seeing as they're giving the merc the chance to affect our SOV (speculation).

Exactly. You're voicing conerns about something no-one knows anything about yet. You can't really ask for balance when there is nothing to balance.

My main point was the comment from Hilmir about no real chat between the 2 games. Which made me think that this would probably mean that they would not allow us to interact in battles from above.
I to do not see the point in someone being on comms if they are not in dust.

I stopped reading you whine the moment you started over generalising things and claiming console owners are all parents looking for a cheap babysitter for their ADHD kids.

EVE has 4 sov levels. I wouldn't be surprised if sov level 1 to 3 remain EVE exclusive and that sov level 4 includes planetary control, thus Dust 514 warfare.

I think as long as there's an option to glass planets from orbit, the problem will solve itself. Warp speed is not fast enough. We must go straight to...ludicrous speed! |
