In the middle of a desert colony something very valuable was discovered and stolen, and now someone isn't telling the truth.
"The Desert Fathersö is a new EVE Chronicle written by CCP Abraxas.

I thought more of the Caldari one. A dial turns and bad things happen... _________________________________

Interesting... especially the mention of archaea.

Edited by: Nikita Alterana on 01/11/2010 17:07:33 very excellent read, the plot thickens indeed.
also, "that hellish thing" is the Caldari methods of torture machine, C/D?
also, the suits were maybe Dominations?
also, the artwork for this great, its good to know that the sort of mining outposts I wrote as existing on Utopia III actually exist.

While on one hand I appreciate these "dark" stories as they demonstrate the inhumanity seeping through New Eden that my character and her organization are working against they do tend to have rather predicable endings.

Nice read, thanks!
Sounded like Caldari corporate internal affairs procedure or something such to me, sure.

Hmmm, I really hate to be the naysayer here... I dunno, I didn't really like it...
I do really like these cronicles though so I hope I can offer some constructive criticism without sounding offensive/discouraging.
I did like the main idea of the story, interesting plot and I always like reading a story of catching someone in a lie. Unfortunately, I found the narrative was all over the place (the words lacked fluidity from one character to the next); I knew who the three characters were but it was hard to tell who was talking at any given point after they're initial introduction. Secondly, most people being tortured (or even threatened with torture) don't tend to yell out the step by step actions of the torturer (he/she already knows what they are doing)
The character Szekel remains too much of a mystery for me, the reader knows near nothing about him. Understandably, industrial espionnage will lend a certain mystique to it's main character, but a lack of knowledge of that character ultimately helped the lies fall apart that much easier (which I am assuming was the basis of the entire story).
Sure the interrogation methods were portrayed as tough, perhaps even a bit extreme (or so we were told). When you are dealing with people who not only survive in a barren environment in deep space, but who can actual endure and flourish, could they fold so easily under pressure? It lends itself to a lack of plausibility. Its not like they really have anything to lose (except for Jania Betodt perhaps).
When one resides in the middle of the desert, a promise can become either a mirage or an oasis...

This is why, no matter how good the pay is, don't ever move to the fringe. Human rights don't exist there.
ON A SIDE NOTE Well while it is good chronicles such as these provide more backstory and a more immersive experience, I think the more recent chronicles have been a bit too dark and gritty, nothing wrong with that but it just seems too forced. There were older good chronicles that describe how things in new eden work, or just life in general. No need to paint a dystopian society with no human rights whatsoever in every. single. chronicle. Sure it may be the fringe, but it is still a colony world. You can't just go around beating everyone up unless you know they are guilty. It just feels too forced, and while an interesting read, it doesn't really show us any more of what is going on. Nothing we can relate to in game. It just feels like someone is trying too hard to sound hardcore, appealing to the sick bastards in here, and sure there are a lot of them. Not that that is bad. TL;DR JUST SAYING IF YOU MAKE LIFE IN EVERY SINGLE CHRONICLE LIKE HELL, IT JUST SEEMS FORCED AND UNREALISTIC. Sure bad things happen, and I'm sure we like to read about it once in a while, but not every single chron. Give those fighting for a better world (empire missioners) some hope :D
It doesn't make a lot of sense - there's really apparently no upside anywhere for any non-capsuleer. Trillions of people and they're all criminals/torturers/victims, always. Everything is dark, everything is terrible. The EVE world isn't particularly believable, even by sci-fi standards.

The thing is, from other chrons, backstory, we know not everyone is evil, and its not as prevalent as chrons would have you believe. I'm just saying STOP REPORTING ON THE DARK SIDE ALL THE TIME! We know there is some good in new eden, show it.

I have to agree with the last few posts here. These chronicles are trying to paint a darker side of the eve universe. Something I can respect, to a point.
But to show only the dark side of this universe is to do a dis-service to the galaxy as a whole.
All I'm saying, you should try showing the lighter side of things as well. __________________________________________________ HK-47: "Can I kill him master? I would very much like to break his neck, just a little, its been a long time fantasy of mine." |

The subject matter in question looks to be a powerful technique for bio-fabrication of metal objects. Imagine the nanomechanical potential of a starship hull that has intricate, organic reinforcing tendrils running through it on par with the engineering of the Sleepers. The Sansha now have it.

It's to late, they're already changing the name of the game. Welcome to EVE Hammer 40K, where in the grim darkness of the future, there is only War....War, and Goonswarm.
Being serious for a moment, I quite liked this chronicle. I agree we're heading a bit into grimdark territory a lot but considering the nature of the Sansha invasions and things going on now, its not exactly like thats an unexpected thing. The world is pretty dark right now.
That said, I expect the next Chronicle to be about some sort of bunny subsuitute, post haste

What the hell are you talking about? In the preceding chronicle, one of the characters got ridiculously wealthy from trading and then retired to go on a long vacation to seek the meaning of life, and the other conquered her mercenary-related mental issues to become the demigod leader of a peaceful utopian cult living an ascetic life in an asteroid monastery.
And in the one before that, a magical man who talks to ships makes his living doing what he loves, and the narrator finds gainful employment due to his friendship with the elf.
How exactly are all of these too dark? Do you need cartoon animals to burst into song halfway through every scene or something? ---

Edited by: Rens Pricemaster on 02/11/2010 23:44:37 Well, it could be that whoever is writing articles can only write dark stuff. While that is ok, whenever I open a chronicle, I almost EXPECT something awful to happen. Don't get me wrong, it is still entertaining, and I enjoy bloody stuff sometimes too. However it just seems too forced now. And enough of these 'open endings'. Just create a proper closure so we don't have to speculate.
Who were these torturers? Who stole the artifact and why? What does that device do? Why resort to such measures when some of them are fully coorperating? Most importantly - what happens in the end? Man I hate these tasteless 'open endings'. It loses it's appeal when half the chrons don't have a proper closure. I know what you are trying to do, and it's still a good read, just saying I can predict the plot of the majority of chrons now.
1-Someone working somewhere in some dystopian world 2-Someone or lots of people getting betrayed/captured/screwed over till life ain't worth living 3-More bad things happen 4-Cliffhanger - derp... it ends?

You do realize we live in the "end times" of this universe, right? Things are going all to hell!
