First off let me say that this system would have be large enough, and based on a long enough time period, to prevent people (I'm looking at certain deklein residents) from using it to their advantage. CCP would also have to keep a close eye on it to prevent such activities.
The problem: The ratios of minerals coming into the game, compared to being removed from the game (note, removed means ammo fired, ships blown up, minerals no longer recoverable), are completely out of balance. Morphite may be the simplest and most obvious example. There is only so much T2 production happening, but the hidden belts are dumping truckloads extra into the game. According to the CSM minutes, nullsec mining is up by a large amount; looking at the morphite price history graph shows you how much. This has been the trend for zydrine, megacyte and morphite ever since Dominion introduced the hidden belts, excluding the price manipulation and giant speculation bubble in March.
My idea: control the potential supply of minerals by the ratios of ore types in the belts game-wide (or at least the hidden grav sites) with the goal of pushing mineral prices back to the old 2, 8, 32, 128, 512, 2048, 8192, 32568 model. If you're not familiar with those numbers, plug them into your ore calculator; the refine amounts and volume of the various ores will make much more sense than they do now. Why? Everything in the game was based around these prices. Many inconsistencies in the game are caused by the absurd amounts of extra ABCM ores coming into the game.
With infinitely renewable grav sites, I doubt the above numbers would be possible, but the ratio of prices would be.
In before:
"but billy, this is a sandbox, CCP shouldn't be dabbling in price fixing" Yes, and sandboxes are built by someone; that person decides the size of the box and the type of sand in it. These decisions effect what us kids can do in the sandbox.
"but this would make my high sec mining near useless" check out what it would do for low sec mining though. Or god forbid, try out null sec.
"dont you dare nerf my giant ABC roids in my hidden belts" as a fellow null sec miner, I'll just tell you to look a bit closer at what you're really doing. |

I'll give it a go. Hellz nah playah. This is a free economy dog. You don't be messing with this kind of thing. CCP has never and will never adjust prices. If you want to do it yourself, create a mining alliance, mine the **** out of New Eden, stack it up, then one day dump it all on the market and crash it. Voila. Instant price adjust. CCP gives you a pack of nails. It's your choice whether you use a hammer to build a house, or a rock to punch them in your head.-á |

The problem is, how do you put in a calculation for the seeding? Lets say there is only x amount of ore y available each day to mine, after market manipulation the prices will be far from what you see above. There will always be a bottleneck in different types of production and that will determine the prices in relation to the supply.
Sure t2 production has its limits but ship and capital production takes up sooo much more ore and thats where the real ore balance needs to be made, not with mining. |

ccp already did, when they added the infinite supply of ABCM ores in the hidden belts. It adds as much "hi end" minerals as us crazy null sec miners want to mine, while not adding a similar amount of "low end" minerals. Of course the free market balances it out, but is the current situation a good balance? |
