Well I've been playing eve for a month now but I'm still not sure what ships I'd like to fly yet, all I know for now is I'd probably prefer not to rely too much on drones. My main focus is PvP in both small gang battles and hopefully some day large fleet wars. I'd appreciate it greatly if anyone could advice me on "must have" skills for PvP or combat in general. At the moment I stuck between wanting to skill to an angel ship or amarr [if that affects what skills I should have at all].
Thanks Credo Akios
Here are my current skills;
Currently training; Medium Hybrid Turret Level 5

So let me get this straight... You're training medium hybrid 5 but your fitting and tank skills are crap. Your racial cruiser is at 3 and your bc level is at 2?
Not to be rude, but I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself.
I'm not exactly the best person to explain how to do your skill train... but training hybrids when you're thinking of wanting to get into angel or amarr ships generally isn't the way to go.
Food for thought: CCP has provided some certifications which are recommended for various aspects of the game. While not all the skills are necessary for people to have within these certs it is a good starting area for a new player to learn about which skills complement each other.

You may want to look into a skill planner and a ship fitter. Here are a couple of the popular ones. There are more out there that offer similar and / or different options. They can help you plan your next few months priorities while still being ready for the 12 month plan between remaps.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply.
Rail: Heh, I know the Hybrid level 5 isn't very beneficial but I had these training before I started reading up about the different races. Yes you're right I am getting ahead of myself but I just want to have some kind of plan in place so the skills I train benefit my future goals even if they are a long way off. The certification sound interesting, do I find these in game?
Reicheck: Thank you for the links I'll download them both and see what I can figure out.

Yeah, certs can be found in game. If you go to your character sheet, the certification section is right under skills. Also, ships have recommended certifications which you can check when you right click a ship and click show info.
There is of course some leeway in these skills, but for the most part, it's a good place to start.
Evemon is indeed great for planning your skill training... you wont regret downloading it.

At least get cybernetics to 4 and get some decent implants. That will help your training speed a whole lot. I would also get all my main support skills to 5 before going any further.
Mechanic, Engineering, Electronics, Navigation and Gunnery(if you are going Amarr), maybe take Spaceship command to level 5 as well. That will help give you a good foundation if you are going to go strictly combat oriented.

Level 5 support skills are a little daunting to a new player, and, quite honestly, unnecessary. Training to level 3s is usually adequate up until fitting full T2. Training to level 4s is usually enough until you're running Level 4 missions regularly.

From an old post:
Skills useful for all ships (very high priority - should be trained to a minimum of IV): Electronics (fit more stuff)
Engineering (fit more stuff) Energy Management (more cap/use MAPC) Energy Systems Operation (cap regenerates quicker) Shield Management (more shields - harder to kill) Shield Operations (regenerate shield quicker)
Mechanic (more structure - harder to kill) Hull Upgrades (more armor - harder to kill)
Navigation (fly faster) Evasive Maneuvering (turn quicker) Warp Drive Ops (warp farther)
Spaceship Command (turn quicker)
Skills useful for combat ships (high priority - train to at least III): *Drones* Drones (use drones) Scout Drone Ops (use combat drones) Drone support skills
*Electronics* Long Range Targeting (target farther) Signature Analysis (target quicker) Targeting (target more ships)
*Engineering* Energy Grid Upgrades (use PDS, RCU)
*Gunnery and/or Missile Launcher Ops (depends on race)* Gunnery/Missile Launcher Ops (see above) All Support Gunnery/Missile skills (as above) Weapons Upgrades (fit more stuff) Advanced Weapons Upgrades (fit more stuff)
*Mechanic* Repair Systems (don't have to pay to repair ships)
*Navigation* Acceleration Control (go faster w/AB/MWD) Afterburner (go faster) Fuel Conservation (use less cap) High Speed Maneuvering (use MWDs)
