Please forgive me if this is easy to answer.
My background is in mining and science, where I have trained quite a lot.
Mining, however, doesn't make a lot of isk and tends to be dull at times, especially in high sec where I hang out.
So I have decided to run missions. Where do I start. I can get into Gallante cruisers and have quite a few drone skills.
However, I like the look of Mimitar ships, so I have started to train those.
Where does one start if the end is to be a Machariel?
Thank you in advance.

That would be a Maelstrom and a good step up for that is a hurricane, you'll never regret training for that ship.

If you have good drone skills already, your optimum path is probably to train to Gallente Battleship 4 and use a Dominix to run level 4 missions while you train the large number of gunnery skills required to make a Mach shine. Once you have T2 large projectiles, skill through to Minmatar battleship 4 and buy your Mach.
Then continue on to train Gallante BS 5 and Minmatar BS 5 because a fine ship like a Mach deserves ship skills to 5.

You start by flying minmatar ships since the weapon system for the macherial are projectile weapons. I got as quick as possible into a hurricane which was passively shield tanked as this has quite low skills and fighting for the federation navy to get the standing to fly level 4 missions. The level 1 and 2 missions were done with a destroyer.
The maelstrom is a pretty good battleship in l4 missions but a tempest can work as well. Once you are in a maelstrom you can get gallant battleships skills and you are then ready to fly a macherial. Of course don't forget to train your core skills.
As for money. If you can T2 buffer tank and T2 weapon upgrades a hurricane you can be invited into incursions it may take a while to get into duh a fleet though. Afterwards you can get into a maelstrom then a macherial in incursions.
Although with the current amount of competition I am no longer sure if the money is better then L4 missions. Also if your ship is not very good sometimes you spend an hour to get into a fleet.

Start with Minmatar ships; they utilise a lot of skills you'll need to use a Machariel properly. The Gallente skills needed to sit in the thing are about all you need from that pool of resources; you won't be using hybrids and I don't think the Mach can hold a full compliment of Heavies or Sentries so there's not much point stressing too much over them either.
I would personally go shield Rupture/Stabber, Cyclone, Maelstrom. Before you even set foot in the Mael, make sure you're packing a full T2 tank and don't be tempted to bypass a couple of items. The first battleship loss is almost always a needless one because the owner thought "naah, everyone's talking arse. I'll just try it and see... oh bugger" and is an expensive lesson to learn - even more so if it's your first lvl 4 and you're panicking about the drones that have you warp scrambled. Also don't worry about T2 large guns, the priority in my opinion is to get the tank sorted, and the dps will follow in time.

I will stick with Gallente then until I have the skills. Who should I be running missions for if you don't mind me asking.

Opps, wrong character before.
I will start doing the correct quests then and train gunnery as I go.
Lots of time and I usually only have time for a few missions at a time anyhow right now.
Thank you very much for all the replies.

Why would you fly Gallente when you want to end up in a projectile ship?

Edited by: Heltoss on 09/08/2011 06:01:09 I will fly Mim ships and work my way towards a Cyclone or Hurricane. I am not sure which faction I work for at this point. There are several navies. I did some missions for the Gallante navy, but I was thinking of switching to the Mim navy and starting over at level 1 again.
I know the Machariel is listed as a pirate ship, but I assume someone somewhere can build one once I have the isk.
Edit: As you can tell I don't have a lot of experience running missions. I have close to 20 mil in skill points, but mostly in mining, industry and science. This is something new for me.
Thanks again.

I disagree, especially if the OP is not going to go down the Gallente road any further. The difference between Min and Gal BS 4 and 5 is roughly 40dps and another 4km falloff depending on implants and hardwirings. Both which is laughable when you already scratch the 1000dps and have 4,2+62km range. With a good afterburner you'll never need that rangy anyway, so why waste almost a whole month of training time that could be spent on more useful skills.*
Although I can see justify training the Min BS to if you want to fly a Marauder, the Vargur is a pretty good PvE ship. But, and this is where the * comes into play, the Vargur makes less isk/hour then a Machariel racing through the missions and a Noctis cleaning up afterwards, e.g. when you locked your agents. Because once in a while you'll have to decline missions. Be it against faction or because they are in lowsec. So instead of learning the Gallente BS to 5 learn to use the noctis with good skills for the ship, rigs and salvagers. Because wrecks stay in space for 2 hours, just bookmark one wreck in each room during missions and start salvaging them as soon as there are no more good missions offered to you. This way you'll still have an income, even when you're not killing rats and collecting bounty any more.
With good skills the combination of Mach and Noctis is even faster with running the missions and looting/salvaging afterwards then any "normal" or navy BS takes to just clear the mission.
So I hope my recommendation became clear: learn the BS skills 4 and learn to efficiently use the Noctis.

I have the exact same fetish as of last week, Minmitar ships.
Here is my plan:
Get in a cyclone ASAP, then move up to Hurricane, Do level 3 missions in Cane while I get into Maelstrom for level 4's.
about the time I cap out maelstrom I should be relatively close to the Mach.
The biggest bonus to getting into Minmitar BS's is they are Superb Fleet ships, Relatively cheep for large engagements, 150-180M, and for fights where I know we might get nailed, then there's always the cane, which can be built to nearly 1000DPS for less then 65M Very versatile and extremely simple in nature being plain old fashion gunboats with excellent salvo damage.
Mach/Loki= Money makers.
I think I have a sound plan.

Yep, I think you have. Just let give you another advice: get to learn th mission and adjust you weapons accordingly. I don't know in which part of EVE you are flying, but being forced to fight at long range with autocannons is only slightly less of a pain in the butt then being pulled into short range with arties.

@ OP, I liked running Fed Navy, it has a very good LP store (that amounts to a GOOD part of your mission income in the end) and has more than a few good agents. I also like Brutor Tribe as it opens the Mini Epic Arc (and who doesnt want to do THAT!?!?!). Also look into the pirate arcs in Null Sec to mix things up a bit. If your needing company in these endeavors, look us up in DBIN.

Having both Gallente and Minmatar BS skills to 4, as well as large projectiles to 4 too (at least).
A Mael is def the best ship to skill up for it... either a mael or a phoon

This^^. Heck you even fit a Mach almost exactly like a Mael.

It's not using the ship to it's full potential, but sure, you can use a Machariel like a Maelstrom.
This ignores the fact that the Maelstrom is a flying brick and the Machariel is apparently made of gossamer with giganewton thrusters attached.

Actually the Mach has a startling amount of EHP. I was quite surprised to find that my PvP arty mael had more EHP than my Abaddon.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I wasn't trying to imply that the Machariel was fragile -- just that it was absurdly mobile.
That said, I think you mean "PvP arty mach" -- I would be quite astounded if a Mael had more EHP than a PvP-fit Abaddon.
