Ok. I've heard tales of abandoned ships/drones out in deep space, and I've heard that scan probes let you warp to things you normally wouldn't be able to warp to.
Are these things true?
Also, how do you use scan probes? Are they reuseable? I heard something about having to launch three or so to find anything... is that true?

Its probably not worth it to go looking for ships at safespots. I doubt anyone would leave a ship out in the middle of space that has some value to it. ----------------------------------------------- CANADIAN |

You've obviously never scanned a 0.0 system.
there's a ton of abandoned ships out there in safespots. However, it's not very easy to get to them. You need a lot of drones to do it, and you need to be get to the systems and survive there long enough to locate and get to the ship. It's not easy, and requires a lot of patience. But if you take the time, you can find some wonderful toys, e.g. ceptors, BSes, indies.

People who THINK they're in a "safe spot" =p
This does however open up the occupation of "salvage crew" ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" "It's a lot like being a walking house that eats lettuce." (Hurray temp sig!) |

So what's the answer to the question about the scan probes? Do they let you warp to things? How do I work them? How many do I need?
Also, I just thought of another... how do I get the ships? A shuttle is out of the question, because it doesn't have the hardpoints for a probe launcher.

You'll need a lot of them. You need to use 3 at a time in order to triangulate the ship's position. This will give you a warp-in point that will get you somewhat closer to the ship, depending on which probes you use. The smaller the probe's range, the better the point. But, you need larger probes to find the ship if you don't already know how far away it is, because it could be nearly anywhere. So then you keep using smaller and smaller probes as you get closer and closer to the ship, until it gives you a point that is close enough to get to with MWDs. This could be as little as 3, but probably more.

This is one of the problems with them, and why it's nice to have a team. If you use a frig, you may just want to abandon it there if you find a better ship, like a BS. But if you don't want to abandon it, you warp the discovered ship to your own safespot, then go back for your original ship, whose location you BM'd. Alternatively, if you're not in a hurry, you can BM the location of the ship and go back for a shuttle at the nearest station (which probably isn't too close by) and get a shuttle to take to the new ship. Once nice advantage of this is you can leave a nice message for whomever you took the ship from by renaming the shuttle something like "Thanks for the Apoc"

Ok, next stupid question: How do you get to a "safespot"? I'm assuming they're just random areas out in the middle of nowhere, but I can't seem to figure out how to warp in a random direction.

sort of .....
you warp to one body on your menu's then warp to another then to another (all random and not obvious stations) and then once you have a few, hit "add bookmark" during mid warp. This is a basic "safespot" anyway.
Laters!
*edit* There used to be a great post in modules forum called "Cloaking 101" (i think). Just looked back over 100 pages of posts and cant find it and the usual search using google was no good either :-( Maybe try looking there for yourself and start at page 100.
Best of luck
