I lost a fight with a Megathron last night , and I'm trying to figure out how I could have won.
They had a heavy neut, blasters, scram + web, ECM drones and T2 hobgoblins; I am not sure if they had more drones or not. It seemed to be armor buffer tanked.
I first tried a close range frigate but the neut and webs made me easy prey for his drones. After that I returned in a long range BC but again I was being hit with the neut all the way out to the edge of point range. His blasters also had no problem hitting me at those ranges so I assume he had null ammo. I managed to hold up ok thanks to a cap booster and active tank but by the time I was out of cap booster charges I only had him to 30-40% armor. After I was out of boosters I could no longer tank, hold point or control range and died quickly.
After the fight I tried to think of some other way to defeat this ship but so far I can't come up with any way to win that fight. It seems any long range fits would still be inside his neut and blaster range while any close range ships would be crippled by the web and neut and then destroyed by his blaster dps. Does anyone have any recommendations for what ship might stand a chance against a ship like this? |

As far as battleships go, there are lots of options - since he's buffer tanked anything with 2 cap injectors and 2 armor reps will win ultimately. However, I'm assuming you aren't up for taking another battleship against him, or that he would simply run if you did...
For battlecruisers, things are a bit difficult. Holding range is a difficult option because he neuts to 25k and has reasonable range. You could directly counter him with for instance an armor tanked talos that has a cap booster and a TD with a range script.
My suggestion would be a triple rep myrmidon, electron blasters, etc. Since you have lots of cap injection and repping power you'll be able to tank him at point blank with good micromanagement (use an exile booster!). Maybe fit a TD in a midslot too, and load it with a tracking script to lower the damage a bit. You could also do an armor Hurricane that has an AB or a TD and does something similar from point blank range. Do you have skills for one race in particular?
EDIT: also cruiser-sized, something like a dual prop SFI would effectively get under his guns despite his web, as long as you have a cap booster to keep the AB going. I imagine he has ion or neutron blasters because he's buffer fit, so his tracking isn't THAT great. It would just take forever to kill him alone in a cruiser. |

Long story short - active tank + TD (ECM if youre caldari fan and have uber skillz). Preferably in another BS too, otherwise you risk dying of old age instead. T2 caldari and gal are prefered due to resists obviously P.S. I especially liked "first i tried a frigate on him". Yeah.. a frigate VS BS If thats not a handicap i dunno what is |

AB pilgrim ..... very close ... kill his drones first and then just wait .... ur drones will wear him off in 10 mins ...
if he goes gcc just wait for the gateguns to rip his buffer. other option is to go dual damp kiting cruiser like HMLs caracal ... not sure if it is feasible but u can damp him under 20km..... not sure if ur cap will survive long enough (it was just creative idea.

Actually quite a lot. T1 hulls are dirt cheap, and as long as you have means to kill tacklers you are fine thx to the enourmous buffer/active tank you have as a BS (until you didnt manage to do it in time then you are gangbanged ). Just imagine a poor helpless raven slowly drifting in low sec. All the pirates get a hard on just thiking about that Bonus points if you are using navy BS. 2x bonus if faction BS, they will come twice just by warping to you. |

Something small with a nos and a web. An ishkur would be good. Get under his guns, use the nos to keep your point going, and kill his drones with your drones after webbing them down. Once the drones are gone he's going to lose unless he can dock/jump/get someone to help him. |

There are a lot of option put forth in order to take on a Megathron Battleship. I'm not certain what ships you have at your disposal, but if you wanted to fight it with an undersized ship, I would go with the Pilgrim. Buffer or active is your choice, though I feel like active would serve you better in the long run. The fight would resemble something like this:
1) Close gap (cloaked if able) and immediately orbit as tightly as you can while keeping up transversal. This is a good scenario to have an afterburner in order to become more difficult to track.
2) Prepare for all the EWAR and DPS! That neut is going to hit you immediately, likely taking most your cap with it. Then the scram, web, guns, and drones, likely in that order. Allow your level head to prevail!
3) Pop a cap booster and start counter neuting. The Megathron is going to be eating its own cap using those hungry and devastating weapons. You have an advantage in the cap war due to your ability to stagger your neuts while he will only have one (and with a long cycle time at that). It is likely he will have to start choosing between the neut and his guns as you strain his capacitor between reload on his own Cap Booster.
4) Turn on the TD with tracking speed. If you are lucky, his webs might miss a few cycles later in the fight, giving you some reprieve from that fantastic DPS.
5) Sick your drones on his. The Ogre IIs will be hitting you hard while scrammed/webbed, but your own drones should make quick work of them(If you have a web, use it on the Ogre IIs to aid with your own drone's tracking).
If all goes well between neut cycles and damage mitigation, you should win this fight, though it will be an uphill battle. I almost feel like having one NOS in your highs would benefit you early on as his heavy neut will hit you hard. Having that NOS will make the initial portion of the fight a little less intense.
Good luck, and Fly Dangerously!
Edit: As I read all of this, I also realized the Curse is just as viable an option. Change out the Tracking Speed Scripts with optimal and keep those neuts on him. Ogre IIs should be easy to avoid, and his Neut will only hit you so often. A faction point would be terrific for this scenario due to his large neut range, but that is neither here nor there. |

Best to keep out of web range and ideally neut range. A high end warp disruptor will pin him while you peck away at his large but finite buffer tank from a safe distance.
If you must fight close range load up on cap boosters and tracking disruptors. Shoot the drones and tracking disrupt the mega and it will be defenseless. Things are only impossible until they are not. |

Everyone can point to the kills they got in a frigate against badly fitted PVE ships. However that isn't helpful advice for what you can do to kill a properly set up PVP fit of that same hull.
A normal PVP megathron with heavy neut and web flown by an adaquately skilled pilot isn't going to die to a solo frigate. |

... Fun question - Arazu or Lachesis might do it but it'd be about a week of waiting.
Very long point, Sensor Damps to choke his range (bye, bye neuting), drones to take his out then chew him up.
Yes a mega can push out some drones - 125 bandwidth style so up to a single flight of sentries or any mixed composite of smaller ones. |
