There's a game out there, that shall remain nameless, which has systems and technology a lot like Eve (to the point where it's a borderline rip-off), but the game is built around remotely-piloted mechs on a planet's surface. I played this game a bit, but found that it was dead; and although it was Eve-like, it lacked Eve's pizzazz. I found, while playing it, that I wanted to be doing it inside Eve, from orbit in a ship.
I think it'd be pretty cool if there were a new section of skills, for mech piloting, along with either a high-slot module for remote controlling a mech, or a dedicated ship type, or both; and limiting the range of control to orbit over a planet. It'd add a new layer to planetary combat - each side would have its mech pilots parked in orbit, guarded by their corpmates, hopefully (if the tech is doable) piloting their mechs alongside Dust 514 players. The mech pilots in orbit & their guards would create a new layer of orbital combat (and more action is always good, right?)
I realize it's a pretty major project, but there are some good synergies...
1- The game (which I've left nameless but I think most people know) is dead, so it's reasonable to think some assets are available pretty cheaply to build a foundation for Eve's version of this.
2- It will give players more reason to get involved in planetary war, and something more to do than ferrying Dust troops around.
3- If the mech piloting is sufficiently "mech-like" (which the nameless game isn't) this can attract a whole new spectrum of players. (Pvp mech games are pretty popular atm.)
4- If the tech works, this can give you a way to let PC players have a Dust-like experience without creating issues vis-a-vis the exclusivity clause with Sony.
5- IMO, most of the complexities of space combat would work with mechs too (different weight classes, EWar, etc.); which could enable a lot of complexity and depth pretty easily (at least, easy relative to starting from scratch). Making infantry necessary to capture objectives, as well as giving them anti-mech weaponry, and putting in a reasonable amount of indoor combat, would keep the infantry valuable; and perhaps the mech combat could be made available to both Dust and Eve players. (Let the Dust players be inside their mechs, because they don't have cool pods like us. :p )
6- This idea gets a lot of its punch from the possibilities of Dust troopers and mech pilots fighting alongside each other, but even if that isn't doable, there is still good potential for combat in hazardous environs, mech-mining of rare resources from planets (perhaps mining mechs would be unmanned multiples, guarded/operated by a single combat mech? Probably more interesting than the alternative...), and probably other ideas I haven't thought of. |

Actually the front of Megathron reminds me another part of body, which due to forum rules I cannot name here...
As for planetary fun, in the Battlecruiser series (Universal Combat later) there was interesting feature: the ship had ability to enter atmosphere and be VTOL air vessel. I'm not sure if it's possible with EVE/Dust engine and if it could fit into EVE gameplay, but almost every alternative beats bouncing off planets. |
