I've been playing with some HiSec Planetary Interaction whilst my skills are being learned and also to get to grips with the PI system.
I moved my final products off planet and I was pleased at what the good earn at Jita and though that this isn't a bad way to supplement mining and then I looked at my transaction log and I was horrified.
Most of the potential income has been swallowed up by the Customs charges. My local Custom Office thieves charge a whacking 10% which, by the time one send goods up and down a few times has taken away nearly all of the profits.
Yes, this can be halved by launching the stuff into space but then it's off to find where the things have gone and this in LoSec is going to be a pirate's dream watching for the Industialist make a mistake and then appear unprotected and uncloaked.
Is this normal of HiSec Planetary Interaction? And, if this is so, is there any way in which to bring down the customs charge or does one have to go into LoSec?
The immediate problem with LoSec is that one, to improve profitability, is going to have to replace the Customs Office and that, basically, says I Am Here and come and gank me.
Has anyone any thoughts on this Customs charge? Is it less in LoSec or in a Wormhole?
Apologies if these are basic questions but the costs have really shocked me. GÇ£No man ought to commit his life into the hands of that Physician, who is ignorant of Astrologic: because he is a Physician of no value.GÇ¥ - Nicholas Culpeper |

Outside high sec you can build player-owned customs offices (POCOs). The POCO owners sets the taxes themselves. That means you compete with people like me, who don't pay any tax at all. |

Welcome to EvE. Highighsec taxes are high, that's CCP encouragement for people to go in lowsec/nullsec and setup their own customs office.
One cannot launch hes own customs office in highsec. We are Minmatar, Our ship are made of scraps, but look what our scraps can do... |

Thanks for the replies, it is as I had expected.
May I ask what the default tax rate for a Customs Office is in LoSec, by that I mean an InterBus one? GÇ£No man ought to commit his life into the hands of that Physician, who is ignorant of Astrologic: because he is a Physician of no value.GÇ¥ - Nicholas Culpeper |

I did PI in high sec for a while and despite the 10% tax and (with my skills) extra 1.5%(ish) sales tax + broker's fee managed to turn a nice profit. Just have to find what is worth doing and just as important, where it is worth selling. |

When I set up my PI chains in low sec I was paying a 4% tax on most of the POCO's I used, due to an alliance relationship.
After some time the alliance "downsized" and no longer exists. As I have no relationship with the new POCO owners I am paying the default tax they have set (10% and at one 12%, ouch).
To control the tax burden I have restructured my planets to reduce the amount of import / export of lower tier materials.
On most planets I now extract and produce to P2 in the same place. When I first set up I had extraction to P1 and then exported / imported to another planet to go to P2 or P3.
When the tax rate nearly tripled that was too high a tax burden. The restructure helped a lot. With the much lower extraction rates in high sec, I don't see how there can be much profit there.
TL:DR minimize export / import steps of sub-P2 products if you have high tax rates to maximize profitability. |

I see them all the time in Derelik. Usually in the .4 and .3 systems. |

Been doing my PI in Low Sec for 3 years running now, with 5 toons and 30 planets, and have only lost one ship (a Bustard...due to the POCO owner actually hanging out cloaked to gank users at the POCO, instead of collecting potential taxes for years. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot financially. I moved my business elsewhere after that).
The taxes are usually in the 3% to 7% range which helps a lot.
Just use Blockade Runners to pick up your product in Low Sec. If there is too much volume of product (this can happen in .1 and .2 systems), learn the Cloak/MWD Trick and use Deep Space Transports, with caution of course. Just look for low activity Low Sec areas to use. In other words, do not do this in Caldari Space.

Is there a decent calculator out there that can take applicable taxes, cost of materials, etc, to determine what is worth making? |
