I've enjoyed salvaging in the tutorials and was planning on getting into a noctis to clean up missions or even hire out as a salvager while I build other skills and learn the game. Especially since some players don't bother to clean up their wrecks in higher levels missions.
But with the new Rubicon feature "Deployable automatic tractor beam and looting device" is a noctis and salvaging career going to be obsolete? It seems like this feature will benefit experienced players at the expense of giving newer players a way to make ISK.

I wouldn't say necessarily. Being a deployable structure it might take time to setup (wild guess, 5 minutes). A mission running might drop it when they begin the mission, only to have all the wrecks there when done. While someone who cleans up after mission runners might have it easier in a Noctis of not having to wait a while for a structure to come online and pull everything in. Plus who knows what the range of it will be.

The Rubicon deployable is for looting modules that drop from wrecks; the wrecks themselves will still be there to be broken down by salvagers - and that's the backbone of the rig manufacturing market. If more mission-runners go with the deployable looter and forego salvaging the wrecks, supply of salvage components will drop, so their price will go up - and a ship optimized for salvage, like the Noctis, may become even more profitable. True, but I think he might be referring to the fact that, as of right now, looting and salvaging takes time and effort that a lot of players aren't willing to put forth. The deployable makes it easier for them to collect everything in a single location, perhaps while they are running the mission itself. Thus all wrecks would be in one location rather than waiting on tractor beams to pull them in, or flying around. When I researched salvaging, the majority of players felt their time was more profitable by moving fast and getting to the next mission. It seems the point of the Winter change is to make salvaging (or at least looting) worth the time of these players. Repercussion is there is less reason for a salvage alt, or independent salvager.
I guess we'll have to see the specifics, but wouldn't the Noctis become irrelevant since it's biggest advantage is the huge tractor beam? A destroyer will be all anyone needs for salvaging.

Keep in mind most of these comments including yours and mine are speculation. We don't have any solid facts on how the module will work yet, it may turn out it is going to be a great tool for the role you are trying to fill. |

From the discussion, it appears the module is basically a "wreck magnet" that will pull them to itself. They still need to be looted and salvaged. So it will still take some time and effort. |

I'm guessing the giant tractor beam structure will mostly be use to clean up after battles where you can't tractor the wrecks as you probably don't own them. for a lv4 the noctis will probably be much faster. also not knowing if it will be reusable or will need fuel, we can't say if it will be cost effective either. You can trust me, I have a monocole |

Some things to keep in mind: We dont know much about this new module. How is it used? How long does it take to use it? How much cargo room does it take up? I see it being a nice module/deployable for some people, but considering the balance of it I cant see it ruining a whole ship/profession.
Typically missioners that dont salvage would be more adapt to hire salvage out. Taking an extra 5-10 minutes per mission (assuming deploy, use, and retreive this module) will cut into their profit of blitzing missions. |

The main questions I have about the Rhoomba deployable are:
- Does it use tractor beams or some new mechanic?
- What is its range?
- How quickly does it draw wrecks in?
- How many wrecks can it tractor at a time?
If the range & speed are significantly lower than a Noctis, I don't see that this deployable would replace a Noctis except in situations where the solo ratter really doesn't want to share their loot/salvage with another player or alt.

- How many will be needed/used? - What's the deploy time? - What's the unanchor time? - How much room in cargo bay do you need for it? - How many trips to empty the thing?
Just a few more questions to think about. |

As others have said it depends what it does. If it is just a giant tractor beam whatsit and doesn't loot/salvage it might actually help you out by drawing all the wrecks to a single location. You can then ninja loot or salvage without having to burn around.
Prices of salvaged materials may well drop if it is a useful thing for level 4 mission runners. Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec. |

dont forget that it might be a nice target for pirates to and if killing it only gives you a suspect timer then i dont Think they will be used at all in highsec, allso salvegers is always a good thing to have so even if you lose the lvl4missionrunners there is other parts of the game that still needs you |

TL;DR all posts. But i mostly mission/rat for bounties and status. I loot but found salvage to not be worth it. I know that won't change. I would gladly let others salvage the wreaks from my missions.
I don't mission often but i know there are many like me. |

Players are forced to adapt.
You may just need to train some new skills, like "anchoring" and use your own structures. The structure won't salvage; it only loots, so the noctis will still have a use. Not a forum alt.-á |

Indeed! It takes an hour to anchor a POS, but only a few seconds to anchor a lab, for example.

What we know of the tractor deployable is vague at best. But consider this: a Noctis has 8 high slots. Consider using a tractor deployable, 6 salvagers and 2 tractors (for those wrecks far out of reach) instead of the usual 4/4 setup. |

Just FYI - yes careers have become obsolete over time. Look up convoy raiding in highsec.
It used to be extremely common *VERY* long ago and some of the drops were quite valuable. It's a lark style stunt these days more than an actual profession done by many. Changes to loot tables and far more profitable (without the penalties) activities brought it to where it is now. |
