AFK cloaking is not game breaking, it does not diminish pve or pvp content, while in cloak one cannot do anything except watch local.
One could go out on a limb and say AFK cloaking is psychological pvp but system wide cyno jammers and mobile cyno jammers the only thing hindering pve and pvp for those effected by some one who is afk...while cloaked... is their own paranoia.. don't fly super-shiny ships.. dont rat with carriers... fly what you can afford to lose..yadayadayada...
The problem lies with Local (insert any of the "nerf local threads here) keep local as local but just make it delayed( or modify it to be like Wspace untill iHUB is upgraded with local chat which will be delayed)... problem solved. move along and whine about something new Null-bears.
and perhaps by extention delayed chat could have a positive effect on high and low too.
note, delayed chat as in the same mechanics as delayed for chat groups. _______________________ http://i.imgur.com/d9Ee2ik.jpg

Well there was a thread that had a big ol' list of previous threads, but ISD saw fit to lock it...now they get more of these threads.

My Signature will remember that thread for ever. (a¦Ñn¦Åa¦Ñ)
I hope it gets unlocked again. Maybe we even get lucky and the last 60 pages or so will be deleted so we don't have to dig through all that repetitive arguments, shitloads of insults and "l2p u nub" posts.
I really like it better when the thread just collected "fix afk cloaking" ideas.
Tho I have to admit that some of the posts in there were quite hilarious. Stupidity should be a bannable offense.

They closed it because much like all of the others it was going nowhere. Anyone with an opinion against "nuke local" gets trolled to no end. To be honest though, the thread was started as a troll, so what should we expect? Seriously, read the OP, and you'll see it isn't a place to "collect ideas" it's listed as a "dump" for "super awesome fantastic idea on how to totally wreck part of the game". At the end of the day, peoples opinions differ. Perhaps if you embraced that rather than trolling everyone who posts about it, these threads wouldn't get repeated. And clearly the fact that the issues is raised so often shows there is in fact an issue.

That thread never was supposed to be a discussion thread. It was intended for the purpose of collecting all the "Fix AFK Cloaking" Threads that have been ignored and locked and reposted, cloned and ignored and locked and locked again.
All that so nobody would ever have to post the same bad ideas ever again and again and again.
Evil forces from beyond the grave hihacked it and turned it into the circle jerk it was at the end. How can one kill something that comes from beyond the grave? It has no live of it's own after all. You can only exorcise it, but most of us don't believe in whichcraft so nobody in that thread , nay, that entire forum was able to do it. (n+¦n+¦n+¦)

"All that so nobody would ever have to post the same bad idea ever again".
It's not a bad idea just because you say so. It's clearly an issue which affects a lot of people, which means at the very least it deserves an adult discussion. Just because you want to jump in and troll it doesn't mean it's automatically a bad idea.
Whats really amusing is that another thread that is commonly posted is "remove/reduce local". But you don't seem to think that one is a bad idea, so you are happy for that to be posted repeatedly. Yet that's the idea that would be almost guaranteed to turn null into a sparsely populated wasteland like WH space.
Double standards, always fun. The Indecisive Noob - A new EVE Fan Blog for news and stuff. |

*MEEEP* Just because I do not care about local or the removal of the same doesn't make it a good idea. I just do not concern myself with that issue, I've got enough other stuff that I have to read but don't want to.
But seriously, I've read all the "fix afk cloaking" threads, and the "suggestions" were all lopsided, bad or both. And it's always the same few "solutions" that are being posted. With fuel for cloaking, the system wide POS anti cloaking array or decloaking hunter probes being the most common ideas.
I mean, seriously decloaking probes, anti cloaking POS arrays or modules with X AU range, wtf?! And it's the same ideas over and over and over again. And the most hilarious thing is, the same arguments that are used against afk cloaking or even cloaking in general can be used against people that are docked up in a station or inside their POS force field.
I bet the OP of the other AFK Cloaking thread that spawned today thought that his solution was quite ingenious and never there before when in fact the very same idea has been posted dozens of times by dozens of different people.
The AFK cloaking collection thread was not there to troll people, it was there so that people wouldn't have to post duplicate threads that would get locked again in a matter of hours, somtimes even minutes.
Those threads seem to spawn and multiply like some hostile flesh eating bacteria.
Regarding Remove/Reduce Local: The main argument seems to be, that once Local has been nerfed, cloaking could be nerfed, too. I'm not convined about that, the real effects about such a game altering change would have to be determined through massive life testing everything else is just theory crafting and wishfull thinking to support ones own arguments. I admit, nerfing local seems like a temptingly simple solution, but that is just what makes me suspicius about that.
So I won't further comment on that. Period.

Debora Tsung wrote:PS: Did I miss anything, long posts are long... -.- Yes. You didn't mention the idea that AFK players (all of them) are warped to deadspace and marked as AFK after a certain amount of time AFK. that affects all AFK players and does not affect cloaking.
Amusingly, the biggest complaint against that was from a "remove local" guy, because he was upset that his alts would no longer be able to AFK mine in highsec.
And seriously, the other thread is a troll. If it wasn't it would treat the fact that other people have opinions with at least a little respect. All that thread was is "Here's a list of ideas I think are ****, please look at my idea of nuking local instead". It's like a 2/10 troll.
And have you thought about why these threads "multiply"? It's because a large number of people are pissed off with having systems effectively shut down by AFK players. And I know I know, "AFK people can't hurt anyone, waaah", a totally nonsense argument, since it doesn't matter if they can or can't hurt anyone, they have to be treated as if they can.
The reason people do it is because it does effectively shut systems down with no risk or effort, so simply saying "there is no problem as they cannot hurt you" is simply nonsense. If I pulled a handgun out and fired it at you, your response would be to evade being shot. It wouldn't matter if the gun turned out to be empty, the smart response is to evade anyway. This is so getting locked. But Cloaking is a broken mechanic.
You are in space and essentially invulnerable. Make a mid warp safe spot, warp to it, cloak, and fly perpendicularly away from the warp path and it is impossible to find a cloaked person.
If a person sat still, no matter how improbable, it is possible to land on the same grid. If someone flies away from that warp path, then you will need to know exactly which of the spherical directions they went and somehow decloak them, assuming you landed in their location. |

Firstly, it doesn't occur much in WH space. You have to occasionally say spooky stuff in local to let them know you are watching them. The reaction is the same though.
Also WH space is dead. They have a tiny fraction the population of anywhere else. Seriously, last year more rats were killed in lowsec that WH space, let alone anywhere else.

I've never spoken in WH local - having spent probably over 6 months of game time online in them....... but if someone talked to me in a WH - I'd gtfo and stop what I was doing - because I'd know they weren't completely AFK.......
Maybe if there's been no client interaction - I include hitting dscan, changing speed, typing into corp/private chat as client interaction - you're marked AFK and removed from local? |

Maybe if there's been no client interaction - I include hitting dscan, changing speed, typing into corp/private chat as client interaction - you're marked AFK and removed from local? Another good one. Go into a wormhole and launch combat scan probes. Launch more periodically when they die (or relaunch if you scoop them in time). You can add occasionally talking in local or showing up on grid and shooting at them for extra authenticity.
You only need to visit your computer every few hours but you can practically AFK cloak them down. Even if they form up to kill you, just blueball. They can't PVE as effectively while you are there, and if you left, your probes would have auto-scooped, so they know you must still be about.
The only reason people don't do it as much is population, WHs don't have much, and even that is more work than your average null AFK cloaker puts in.
All AFKness is bad though tbh. Just stop people being able to go AFK by warping them to deadspace and marking them (like logging off, but not to save people having a fit about having to log back in). When they return to their PC they warp back to where they were (like logging back on) and tada! all AFK activities become active activities or nothing.
