You will probably be able to jump without using a gate.I think only large ships are able to use them and they would take huge ammounts of cpu and power to use.

You will probably need some jump drive to put on your ship. So this skill i think is a waste of money.

Don't bother training the jump drive skill now, just wait until they actually become available to test on chaos and start been mentioned in the patch notes.
At least then you'll have an idea of how they work and whether you'll be able to use them. Plus you'll probably still have time to train the skills before the modules come out if you keep an eye on the patch notes.
In the mean time train skills that you can use and benefit from now :) By all means by the jump drive skill ready to train, but I woulnd't advise training it yet. But then at the end of the day if you decide to train it, it is up to you, but be aware that the skills that are not in use yet can and probably will change before the modules become available.

AFAIK, the skill Jump Drive Operation, only allowsthe use of jump drives, you will then require in addition a secondary skill called Astormetrics, to actually plot the co-ordination of the jump. The second skill isn't in game, and with good reason, currently the DEVS have no idea how this will work ;)
I would like to see the Jump drive operation skill allowing range of jump, say one system per level. Whilst the astrometrics skill allow you to detremine where within the system ofchoice you should land, with varying degrees of accuracy, lvl1 for hittign system randomly, down to lvl5 for nice accurate landing where you click on the minimap.
Would be a nice interim, if they made this most expensive of skills actually worth something.... like the higher the level the farher from an ingame gate you can jump or something similar. Especially considering they are contemplating nerfing haulage by ensuring you have to warp to a safe distacne form jumpgates and travel the rest.

I already have lvl 5 astrometrics. I got it when i created my character. Can't find it in TQ stations. Well I guess I am ahead of the game. Woot!!!
Originally astrometrics was suposed to reduce the cycle of your miners. At least thats what it said in character creation a long time ago.

hmm astorgeology is the mining skill, astrometrics is the jump drive co-ordination skill.
Can you generate a character with atrometrics by default?

I would imagine Jumpdrive add ons being Titan only and the method needed to reach Jove space (and that other big cluster which is unlinked to the rest of known space).
The ability for ships to dock with Titans and be transported by them would facilitate not everyone requiring the skill.
Pure speculation, of course

I don't think I'll train it now, but I'm going to buy jump drives now. My guess is the price on these will be raised, It is much easier to get money at higher levels and 10mill won't be that expensive when it finally comes out.
