Good day, I have recently started playing EVE about two weeks ago. I want to get into PVP and maybe some pirating. However I don't really know what I am doing and the two fights I have been in ended in my death mostly because I get so nervous and my hands start shaking I end up making some dumb mistake and dieing. So I was hoping some of the vets might be able to give me some advice on useful skills and what not but most importantly tips on how to beat the jitters.
Thanks in advance.

Some good general tips i think would be:
1. Stay Calm. It's hard at first, but you've gotta chill or you're gonna make really stupid mistakes and end up in an egg.
2. Practice, you need to practice pvp. There's always more to learn and experiance counts for way more then nice mods or skillpoints.
3. Well organised corp, not vital but really helps. You certainly need voice comms too :D

Edited by: Irashi on 19/04/2006 09:50:25 The best thing you can do about the jitters is practice, they soon go away. Learn to accept death, not seek it but accept it when it comes, as when you first start off you're going to die a lot as you make your mistakes and it's best to accept this than get upset every time it happens. The best way to remove yourself from this fear is to only fight in something you can easilly replace, this is also good for ensuring that you don't lose all your money.
Alcohol also makes you stronger, faster and harder to hurt in PvP. __________________________________________________

Heh the jitters pass with time, the best advise is to start fighting in frigs with cheap mods. Doing this means that if u panic its ok as you only lose a few isk a time.
Try joining a corporation that pvp's e.g. Goonfleet, or some low sec frig pirates. Joining a corp will allow you to learn from more experienced players.
Learn to use your scanner (there is a guide around here somewhere) it will save your life and allow you to pick your targets.
Good luck and feel free to convo me if you need anymore advice.

This adrenaline rush will never completly go away thats hte reason there are players over 3 years old and stil playing. But at least u will learn to control it over time. first train for using micro warp drives (essential for pvp in frigs) learn the key's shortcuts
join a corp to learn things quicker it will take u almost a month in order to put up a descent fight in a frig good luck

HI Phinaes
Let me tell you a secret. People think that because I was with Cult on and off for 3 years (now Omnicient Order) yes Im everywhere all at once :) That I know what Im doing!
I have pulled off the biggest blag in Eves history doing this! I dont know what Im doing even now after 3 years and yes my hands still shake and my heart pumps and that's why we play Eve isnt it?
Seriously, do this..
A. Train your learning skills it will pay off later on B. Pick a ship you like and master it dont chop and change ships when your new C. Join a corp. There are loads and all (most) will have a PvP arm to them. Join the FA as they are getting lots of PvP with us now ahemm :) D. Practice different loudouts for your ship. It's your ship so learn what it can do and with what and in what situation. Talking of which there is no single ship that can handle ALL situations! I can fit my scorp in myriad ways but im not the tank in the fleet and im not the heavy hitter either! MY JOB is to support and jam the enemy and thats what I do. My buddys can fit meaga weapons and BCUs because they know I am jamming so they dont need too! Of course 1v1 is different but its not often I could take a 1v1 with most of my setups to be honest.
Hope all that helps and welcome to Eve.
PS Try not to take death personally :) It happens. IO fried my best scorp the other day in practice just when I said ok IO Im outta cap call off your drones his connection died :( My ship followed! Ever heard the song "another one bites the dust" Be you a Pirate or a Simple Alt creeper! Sooner or later you'll dance with Soul Reaver and His Amazing Underpants

WOW that was pretty fast. Thanks alot for all the good advice. Now as far as experience goes should I just save up a few mil and then head down to 0.0 and give it heck? I do want to do some pirating but right now I think I will do agent running to supliment my income after loosing most of my ships so I don't want to ruin my sec status yet. And given my some what limited play time currently I don't feel I should join a corp either. So any more great advice would be much appreciated.

My advice is to never PVP when it's freezing cold.
It seems to amplify the jitter responce to pvp. The amount of times i've went into fights shaking like a leaf despite the fact that i've had far more scary fights before leads me to believe that you need to have a nice thick pair of socks on to PVP. True story. -----

If this has been spoken about above then IĈm sorry (too damn lazy to read it all)
Don't rush anything. If you see a target on scanner, don't go charging in guns firing.
Take the time to check if there is backup/escort.
See if you can get the positioning right BEFORE you warp, so that you will be close to optimal when you drop out of warp.
Yes we all want to charge in and nuke everything, but those that actually plan ahead will usually be victorious.
Test out the ship you are flying, know its limits and know its strengths.

Edited by: dedo dedere on 19/04/2006 11:33:15 Hi there
My corp is currently engaged in a merc contract or two. When these ones are over were gonna declare some pirate corps i think. When they are over and we have no one else to declare or no more contracts we'll go back to our practice war agaisnt friends and return to hunting in 0.0. We are a small corp with 4 members that have had over a years experience of PVP in soem of the largest alliances around. The other members are friends with a yearnign for PVP or newer players who want to learn.
You sound like you've got the right attitude. To be honest all you need to become a good PVP'er is the right friends and the enthuisiasm for PVP.
IF you're considering joinign a corp (which i really think you should) send me a message ingame. We would make sure you have the isk to fit the ships you want, we would teach you alot about PVP, and you'd get a vaiety of experiences.
even if you dont wanna join just yet still convo me or eve mail me and ill give you some more pointers

Just don't care about dying. Its a game. Who cares.
PvP for the fun, not the 'glory', and you won't have to nurse a shattered ego when you lose a ship.
Relax, and enjoy. People do stupid things when they are all angry and puffed up - avoid getting like that.

Dying is great. Especially when you're new and don't have expensive clones and implants. Dare and die. That's the way to learn. Nothing is as good as finding yourself in the clone lab and realised that you've learned something new.

to become good at PvP you need loads of practice. loads and loads and loads and loads. You also need to know a lot about ships and how everything works. A good PvPer can assess what he is up against with his huge knowledge of the game, and then employ a fitting tactic at short notice.
Skills help ofc

Edited by: Ripline on 20/04/2006 02:09:13 Resisting the urge to engage right away helps. Habitually taking a few seconds to think before making a move will help. Not being aware of your surroundings gets you killed. Use the scanner and maybe check the local one more time, in a word.
Other than that, practice. The biggest hurdle is to just to get used to it. Dying a lot helps, means you're not as easily distracted when getting shot at.

good pvpers arnt afriad to engage and lose precious setups, fear is your enemy, panic = death. confedence will reward you. now im not saying u should take out a CN raven to amamake :P but learn the tricks, and NEVER be afriad to make sacrefices. otherwise ull just lose despites the odds being in your favour.
now being a good pvper DOES not make you rich, you can pirate and snipe at gates poping haulers and shuttles packing bpos and equipment and get rich, PVPing is more than that.
EDIT: you must master some crucial instruments, like scanners, probes, the right selection of drones etc. PVPing is not always a direct path, often you;ll need to chase.
make this statement your creed -> "Id rather fall beside 10 lions, than stand with One thousand sheep"
good luck:)

Getting good at PvP is neither fast or easy or cheap. After 2 years of playing I'm still far from where I want to be... but I'm getting better.

Yeh I would second the above! If you really wanna excell at PvP go in a small group and take on a larger group :) 10 people firing on 1 ship is NOT PvP in my book that's pirating ROFL.
Disclaimer
Soul Reaver actually loves all pirates :) Afterall the game would be a tad boring without them in it methinks! It would become like UO or worse still THE SIMS! Still thinking about it what fun I could have if I opened a small hair dressing salon! Now there's a thought!

As many have said before me, fit up a frigate and get out there. The main advantage of small ships is they are extremely flexible and allow you to take advantage of certain situations.
Make sure you know how to use all the tools CCP gave us, play about with your map settings, learn how to use the scanner. Bookmark all those useful sites out there that give you system/ship/npc information.

If you want to get good at PvP here are 3 tips from me:
1)Study. Learn how every module in the game works. Learn what damage types all the weapons do. Learn what natural resists all the ships have. Learn how to evaluate your own setups by doing dps calculations and by looking at resistances and speed. Knowledge will give you the upper hand in most fights.
2) Practice. Get out there and do it. You'll want to tweak your overview to suit your needs. You'll want to learn how the scanner works. Get enough fights under your belt so that you can control your emotions in combat.
3) Think about what the enemy is really up to. What would you do in his shoes? Does he have something up his sleeve? Never assume that the other guy is dumb. Always be aware of things that he could do to beat you and try to be prepared for them.

Alcohol also makes you stronger, faster and harder to hurt in PvP.
qft
Some say alcohol helps, others say dying a lot.
I think I see a pattern.

thats the good thing about eve
I now drink a pot of coffee before logging in to Eve. This helps to simulate the adrenaline rush.
Yeah, I barely have an adrenaline rush these days. Only in the really, really close fights (read barely ever)

Quote: My advice is to never PVP when it's freezing cold.
True, it's the same with playing guitars. When you're cold, your body cuts off blood supply to your extremities - IE fingers, so that it can keep the rest of your body warmer. You'll be jittery and stiff.

Most people go for instant gratification and want to blow things up right away.
I think before you can be a good killer, you need to learn how to run away. Learn how to avoid combat. Learn how to make your way through hostile areas without being caught. Master the underlying game mechanics...most of them aren't dependent on skill points or special gear.
Use the map, scanner and instas.
Once you can avoid combat, then learn how to pursue it. Knowing how to avoid combat means most of the time you're only going to fight when you really want to.
Learn how to pick your battles. When you can do that, you're ready to learn how to win them. I'm still working on that part. ____________________________________________________________________

Edited by: TRDMN1 on 20/04/2006 21:18:59 Most people here that say die alot kinda confuse me, i spoke to a 2003 player (right from the start) and told me he had never been podded.
Yet that person pvps everyday, so why do the new guys die to learn something, when the older guy didnt? whats different from back then, to now?
Is it harder for a new person then it is back then?

Umm yeah, i was gona say something along those lines, something zord taught me well, it's look at all posible avenues of defeat before committing.
Ofc the fun part probaly in all of it is looking for all avenues in way to victory when the odds ain't so great.
Things will go wrong either way, but experience of it... well it's one more off the check list ______ Long ago one gorgeous night, we let the stars grow free. We let Zhuge do that once, he came back carrying a traffic cone, a forsale sign and three empty bottles of dutch lager. He also lost his Zimmer Frame... - Imaran

By "dying" they mean losing ships rather than getting podded.
It's fairly easy not to lose ships either, by just not taking any risks and going for the easy ganks. But that won't really make you a better player. By challenging yourself and learning from mistakes, you make yourself a more skilled player.

If it sounds like a bad idea, or isn't used commonly, try it. Always. (Except for warpstabs. Morally offensive setup ruiners, they are.) Targetting disruptors, sensor dampeners, ECCM, anything you don't normally use, or aren't used to using. Anything you think will help you.
You've got a target in a Blackbird? Don't come here and ***** about jammers, fit ECCM and beat the hell out of him.
A target using warpstabs? Try getting more points of scrambling on him. Learn to adapt, you will overcome.
Die, alot. Alot.
It will happen, and it's not a big deal. Success costs money before it can earn you money. The definition of experience encompasses both good and bad.
Some will learn faster and others, but everybody is capable of learning.
