For the moment and immediate future, I feel CCP is hoping to retain a majority of their player base by eluding to futuristic plans they hope will eventually play out. But...
- How many players will leave if they were hoping their subscription money was helping World of Darkness along?
- How many players feel CCP is not capable of doing anything more than just ship adjustments and other trinkets?
- With the world economy being what it is, how many players that used plex as a means to an end feel it becomes a grind each month if its in game "costs" keeps rising?
- How many players will drift off to try the next "Eve killer" and though chances are great it will not kill Eve, these players decide to pursue other entertainment values and not return to Eve?
- What hook will CCP use to try and entice a brand new player (and not another alt) into playing a ten plus year old game?
- What carrot will CCP use to try and entice their veteran player base to stick around for the next big shiny?
- What is the player base threshold for patience per each step of CCP's future master plan that might stumble and be delayed, altered, or outright cancelled?
- From a financial point of view, can CCP survive with just Eve as their main source of income?
Perhaps I am borderline "doom and gloom", but if CCP announced they are shutting the servers down at the end of this year, I would not rant and rave, but remember the good memories. Personally, I've become detached from Eve as a game, and as a community. I have not reached that "I don't give a damn!' stage, yet... And for me, idling my subscriptions is a very cheap form of entertainment - thus why I have not bailed. How do I see the future of Eve? I think CCP will cater further to their core, "fanatical" fan base: those players that ~live~ for Eve. Any new players or those on the fringe will be told there is enough content for them to play; but the biggest, bad ass "toys" will only be available to those with excessive means of gathering resources and with an unhealthy amount of time wrapped around a video game.
But I could be wrong and CCP will catch lightning in a bottle again... |
