For a while now, I have known the ECCM can make you immune to combat probes (or damn close to it). But today someone asked me to explain why it works, and I was at a loss for words.
In fact the more I thought about it, the less it made sense, if your signature is associated with your sensor strength in any way, it seems that ECCM would make you easier to scan down.
Can someone explain how this works? Thanks in advance! |

target size = sig radius / sensor strength
If you increase your sensor strength, you decrease your size as a target which makes it more difficult for probes to pinpoint your location. . -á<- Argue this, not this ->-á( -í-¦ -£-û -í-¦) |

OP, suspend any kind of rl scientific thinking as you ponder this question. Yes, one would suppose that as sensor strength goes up so would the energy use, and therefore the ability to detect heat or whatever emanates from all that energy use. Heat or whatever should be given off with all that that energy is safeguarding.
But this is EVE, an internet spaceship game. Two of those words connote make believe. So return to your child like self and just accept that the game formula rewards packing eccms onto a ship with it being harder to probe down.
And don't be particularly bothered by BM's negative comment. He is always negative. He and his buddies even think the devs favor other factions than the one he chose, and that they revel in their persecution. I really don't know why he plays or posts in this game. It does not seem to fill him with any enjoyment. And that is usually what games should do. |

Suspended disbelief has to be a given.
But think about it as if the ECCM is jamming the probes with chaff or signal noise. It doesn't make you invisible to the probes. It just makes the probes unable to give a 100% lock.
That is to say without counter electronics to boost up probe strength again (implants and what have you) |

It used to be, to become "unprobable", your ships sensor strength / sig radius needs to be greater than 1.083
Your sig radius depends on your ship class, and is difficult to change (fleet boosts and Halo implants can). Your Sensor strength may be increased by ECCM.
CCP put a cap on this, so that when you do exceed this "unprobable" criteria, you will still be probable by highly skilled probers with virtue implants.

Stats (with level 5 skills): - cap stable at ~70% - burns at ~3200 m/sec - sensor strength ~43 - signature radius ~35 - Sen Strength / Sig Radius = ~1.22
I once "AFK cloaked" a null-sec system for 4 days with this ship... "for science." Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

Cool setup. The ships I use the ECCM on are usually my gas mining Ventures. I've had many a wannabe ganker try to scan me down and fail. Then I get on local and make fun of thier inability to "perform".

actually you can use 'probe proof' remote ECCM heron to boost your chimera so you do not have to gimp your fit to make 'probe proof' chimera. |
