want to fly logibro or dps
if logibro basilisk or scimitar or whatever the amarr/gallente thing is called (also train Logistic 5 ... FC's like logibro's with 5's in logistic skills)
if dps vindicator, machariel or nightmare are good choices megathron or rohk are cheaper alternatives
If the FC likes your fit, you'll get an invite if he doesn't .... keep waiting |

The best and fastest way is to research and find an Incursion community that you can stand, and then ask them for advice.
Incursions are designed to be community content, so the key is to find a suitable community first, then adjust skills and ships.
CCP Greyscale: As to starbases, we agree it's pretty terrible, but we don't want to delay the entire release just for this one factor.

Vindicator and Paladin are king of armor incursions. Vindicator, Mach, Nightmare are king of shield incursions.
Just about any logi ship will work though some groups require logi 4 while others want logi 5. Save for the Nestor which is only useful in armor vanguards. Not a forum alt.-á |

The player run Incursion channels are VERY specific about ship fittings and arguably a little paranoid about pilots they don't know.
Generally it is easier to get into an Incursion fleet if you are a logi pilot (Scimitar or Oneiros.) as there are usually many more DPS pilots to choose from.
Ah just reread your OP. Gallente would be Oneiros and Amarr is I think the Guardian. |

Some fleets are actually welcoming to newcomers, and they'll have suggestions for ships to try and recommended fits. Some may demand one or two faction or deadspace mods, but not so much in a "you must be this rich to ride this ride" way as for your own defense.
For logi, look to the advice above. For DPS, if you can only fly Gallente or Amarr, you may want to look for armor fleets, although you can shield-tank ships like the Dominix, Hyperion, Navy Dominix, or Navy Megathron. (They're not as well suited to it as Caldari or Minmatar ships, though; this past Monday I was on the wing of a Hyperion that got cut to pieces in an assault site.)
Generally the top-rated DPS ships are the Nightmare, Vindicator, and Machariel (the Nightmare's more of a shield ship, though the Kronos update may make it more viable for armor fleets); Marauders might also show up, although the bastion revamp might be a bit problematic. At any rate, I've seen Machs, Vindis, and Nightmares in the fleets I've flown, but no Marauders.
I fly a shield Tempest Fleet Issue at present, myself; we'll sometimes have the T1 battleships represented by Hyperions and Maelstroms, but other classes are apparently a bit on the fragile side for the assault and HQ sites I've been in. (I was able to handle Vanguards fine with a T1 Tempest, though.) "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." - Kurt Vonnegurt |

If you decide to go logistics, ensure you're at minimum level 4 in Logistics. I've not seen a fleet that will accept less than 4, and most require 5 for proper up/down links to fellow logistics in a Basilisk.
There are some groups within the incursion community that will also gladly train you in how to logi properly. Contrary to popular belief, there is more to it than F1, F2, F3, F4...
I would also point out from experience that you risk less as a logi pilot than you do as a DPS/sniper/drone bunny pilot. Generally most organized groups cover logistic losses without having to invest in an insurance or ship replacement fund. The initial cost to get into a logistics ship is also significantly less than a DPS/sniper ship.

I'm going gallente with TVP, Hyperion then Vindi, they're t2 req. except turrets/drones(most fcs are anyway) as long as you can verify (picture) that you're going for t2 turrets/drones and you use meta4turrets/faction drones and ammo. You will be low priority though so time when DPS is kind of lacking would be best otherwise you probably won't get fleet. I'm going to do t1/fac Hyperion->t2Vindi->IV recommended skills->V recommended skills, join the mailing list (TVP.Hybrids)to see the recommended skills for hybrid. Forum alt. |

Decide where you want to run incursions, as they are very different in different types of space.
Highsec it's pretty much mandatory to have high skills and blinged ships to win site contests (where you race another fleet to do the most damage in a site). There's a few ways people do this - sometimes by flying 9 damage 2 logi 1 offgrid booster fleets, other times 10 marauders (locally tanked), 1 utility, 1 offgrid booster, or other times with less specialized fleets that eschew site competition in favor of negotiating with/threatening other players (such as "if you contest our sites, we will end the incursion early" or "if you contest our sites, we'll pay gankers to attack you")
Lowsec, it's all about accepting losses will happen, and preparing by flying cheap. You also have to deal with NPC gatecamps which you will often need to shoot your way out of. And you will need friends to escalate if and when predators visit you.
Nullsec incursions usually require you to be part of an alliance that holds sovereignty over the constellation.
Once you make that decision, your first steps will be clearer. But for now, train up the most universal skills - which are (for logistics) Logistics 4 and Racial Cruiser 5, for damage ships tech 2 large weapons and the skills that boost no-capacitor-use tanks, and for support ships (which are only seldom fielded) it will vary a lot from one incursion group to another and even one type of site to another. I want to elaborate on why, because this is very important.
Logi cruisers fit battleship-sized remote repair modules. Even cruisers with solid electronics can't manage that sort of capacitor use, and so the Logistics skill grants a massive capacitor reduction.
However, the way it is calculated has massive escalating returns as you increase the Logistics skill.
Logi 3 you need 55% of base capacitor Logi 4 it's 40%. That's about 27.3% less than at logi 3. Logi 5 it's 25%. That's 37.5% less than at logi 4.
For comparison, most damage ships only improve by 5-6% performance from level 4 in their main skill to 5. Logistics ships improve 7 times this amount. Even the skill Drone Interfacing (notorious for being an 'overpowered' skill, so much so that it is being reworked in Kronos) has a much lesser effect than this.
