Hello all: I've often wondered why it is that you can't list your overview to show ship names rather (or in addition too) the character names. Now, I realize that you can set the ship name (as well as corp, alliance, etc.) to show up "on screen" but I think it would be very nice to have it in the overview.
For that matter, I think it would be great if that was ALL that would show up in the overview, instead of the character name. It seems that it would make more (fictional) sense that the ship would broadcast some kind of identity code, and that it wouldn't be immediately apparant who is piloting the ship.
I suppose that I do understand the fact that this type of thing would raise all sorts of technical and game play issues, such as the fact that players could try hide, or to masquerade as someone else simply by re-naming their ship. But perhaps skills could be introduced that would allow scanning of a ship to determine the true identity, or skills that could hide the true identity of a pilot. Of course it would then probably be a larger strain on database size to require ships to be named.
This isn't really intended to be a well thought out proposal, just a conversation starter. I suppose that I would be happy simply with the ability to turn on "ship names only" in my overview simply to satisfy my own sense of increased immersion.
Thanks! Talbot

I've often thought this myself. It would make sense that some sort of IFF system would transmit the ship type, and ship name, rather than the pilots name.
I know you can get the ship type by using the mouse over, but it's not the same as having it 'at a glance' in the overview.

Would be interesting to call someone primary if the opposing fleet decides to name all their ships the same.

That would certainly force people to use the labeling abilities of the overview eh?

Does that work? I've tried using it a few times and never seen any effect ----------- If I see one more 'FIRST!' post, I'm gonna snap. |

Yes, it does. I use it occasionally to guide my gangmembers to focus on the same group of rats when we do some missions together. You have to open the overview settings and enable the column "Tag" for it to work, and then only the gang leader can set tags. (Right-click rat)

the problem with tagging is that it takes WAY too long to use in fleet combat.

I somehow feel compelled to suggest that being subjected to the names people inflict on their defenseless ships would break immersion in even worse ways than being subjected to people's names already does.

We have ship names, ship types and ship classes. I am not sure if you picked the right one.
