1. Be patient... this is a "process game." The only goals out there are those you set for yourself and it takes quite some time before you become even 90% comfortable doing things.
2. Talk with others and show a good attitude... even if you do not want to or have good reason to. This is a game after all. You are here to have fun and sometimes you have to learn and connect with others to have more fun (or better protect the fun you desire).
3. Learn the basics of PvP, PvE, and industry... even if you have no interest in any of them. They all affect each other in some way and no one is immune.
4. Understand that this is a multiplayer sandbox. This means that you can do whatever you want in the game... but other players can do the same thing... even if it runs counter to your goals and objectives.
5. Nothing is guaranteed in EVE. I am no more guaranteed to kill you than you are in avoiding me killing you. Likewise, I am no more guaranteed to get a "fair price" from you than you are in selling me stuff at an "unfair price." The trick is to stack the odds in your favor whenever and however you can (see Point #3). Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

I'm pretty sure James is following my guide on How to become a Warlord (or adopted it later on). Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. If you are coked up and feel like you really want to play just sniff something off of toilet seat in nearest club. 5. If during point 3 or 4 you got robbed, molested and/or ended up in jail keep in mind that at least you didn't make really terrible mistake of playing Eve.
Believe me, I used to be addicted to online casinos. I wish I stuck with them...
What if you do all of the above and STILL log in at the end of the night to play EVE? Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.
