Hello, As the subject says, I am going to make an alt focused on PVP. The idea is to train him in one shield and one armor tanking faction. Since I already have a PVE pilot which can fly Gallente and Caldari (he will be used only for isk farm), I was thinking about having the PVP pilot able to fly gallente for armor (for drones doctrine) and minmatar for shield.
What do you think? I would appreciate to hear your point of view, but please, give some explanation.
Thank you for your help |

You could always go Amarr for some drone doctrine.
Crucifier frigate uses drones as primary DPS. Arbitrator cruiser uses drones as primary DPS. Curse and Pilgrim Recon Ships use drones as primary DPS.
Maybe others too, but those are for sure off the top of my head.
And that way you could experience all four races' ships.
When I finally do make an impact on this universe, it will reverberate across the entirety of it, and no one will be able to truthfully claim they don't know me.

Until then, I'll just sit quietly over here, minding my own business...

every race has good pvp ships, just generally in different classes.
Gallente currently possess one of the best fleet cruisers in the game right now: ishtar. Minmatar have a wide range of excellent ships, battleships leave a little room for desire though.
If you fly mostly cruiser and smaller, both these races have a wide variety of choice. |

I agree, I like amarr ships but the armor slot will be probably taken by the gallente, in addition I like blaster guns.
Any advice about choosing minmatar or caldari for shield fleets, will be very appreciated.

At one time, Minmatar was considered the "hardest" race to train for. That's because they have missile ships, gun ships, shield ships, and armor fits. Plus, all of their ships have drone bays, which requires some drone training to round out the hull. With solid skills they were also king of the hill in those days.
These days, the same could be said for almost all races tbh.
In your first post, you used the word "Focus". I would recommend doing exactly that, but for one race only, at this time. My personal belief is that one good focused ship/pilot is better than two half assed ships. It is your game though, so whatever is MOST FUN FOR YOU is all that matters.
Pick a race that you think is fun or has cool ships, and go for it. |

Thak you for your reply, do you say that because the shield armor requires medium slots which are useful for PVP? Honestly I always thought shield factions ships weren't really the top choice for PVP due their tank fitting but I see lot of good Drake PVP fittings around. I agree with you about focusing on one race in the beginning, but for the long run it seems that the versatility of flying armor and shield ships is a plus.

It really just depends on what you want to go for. Every race has great ships that you can use for PvP.
When I started my PvP toon I went strait to training Minmatar because I wanted close combat and I wanted to try projectiles. But now she can also fly Caldari ships pretty well too, but I didn't start training Caldari skills until she was at least 6 months old because i wanted to focus on Minmatar first. Minmatar is pretty versatile as well for PvP (imo at least).
It's all about what you want to do. But I would focus on just one first and get the skills for that and then go from there.
Hope that helps though!

Yes I agree, tried to make some simulations on EveHq to see how long it takes and doesn't worth it. I feel ready to use a ship only when all skills are at V, doesn't make lot of sense taking a ship where if you have bad skills and can't get the best from it. I was also thinking about minmatar, but in the end I will go with gallente, it takes extra time due Drones, but at least I will have two options even if I stay with one facton: guns or drones
thank you all for sharing your opinion though. |

Focus on a ROLE, not a race. By knowing what role you want to play in a fleet, you have already defined many specific skills you will need. Often the choice of race follows since some ships in a class are decidedly better than others.
That said, right now the Gallente are the darlings of CCP. Between buffs to hybrids and the complete obsession with drones- Gallente are getting a lot of bang for the buck in training. Most larger ships use some drones, so you end up training them regardless- but at the moment drones are massively OP to the point of dominating PvE and PvP completely. Ishtars Online....nuff said. Amarr have some good drone boats, which tend toward cap warfare, so you can fly those without worrying about T2 lasers. Hybrids are good again, and cross-pollinate with Caldari without having to also train up a bunch of missile skills. Sensor damping is a powerful EWAR type. So again, Gallente is a strong choice there.
When I first started playing Eve, the word was 'Winmatar', because of a balance issue favoring that race somewhat. Now I would say Gallente is the favored nation within CCP. |

I'd definitely recommend gallente with hybrid weapons and and drones in the current metagame.
The greatest cheap T1 gallente PvP ships for someone who is just starting out: Catalyst (high dps suicide ganking ship) Atron (fast tackle and potential kiter) Incursus (strong brawler) Tristan (good kiter or brawler, but needs drone skills) Federation Navy Comet (a tad more expensive, but very powerful. Uses drones and hybrid turrets) Vexor (Good value drone cruiser)
Don't fall into the whole "I need every skill at 5" trap. In a fleet setting you can be very useful with all relevant skills at 3-4, and the train to get there is not very long. When you are new, the only skills really worth getting to 5 early are skills that unlock weapon specializations or other tech2 modules, and the Drones skill, if you plan to use a ship that can field 5 drones. |

quoting the important bit.
solo or fleet/gang ?? if fleet/gang .. it's kind of pointless training shield tanking when all your buddies are out flying armour tanked ships
