Hello EVE,
Recently I've encountered a problem with purchasing a new gaming PC. I'm an exchange student for the year in Osaka, Japan and it seems that Dell is the only company that can ship a computer over here. I shouldn't really say that they ship the computer, they just build them here. I'm not too keen on Dell since I've found that I can pretty much get the same quality machine for less from one of the other companies. So far the only company besides Dell that may be able to ship here is Falcon Northwest. Even then Falcon Northwest only lists a number to call for international numbers so I'm not sure they can send it over here. Can anyone tell me any other companies that might be able to ship to Japan? If not, could anyone tell me where I can find out how much it costs to ship a desktop from the US to Japan? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

There is no such thing as a Japanese gaming PC. Over here everyone plays video games, and almost all of those video games are on either a nontendo system or sony playstation.

You could try Acer, Their dealers tend to be pretty global.
So for the shipping costs, You probally could get away fairly cheap, if you take a slower mailing system (IE, in the states, UPS ground rather than 2 day air).
Either way, your looking at a few hundered dollars at least.

Japan does have computer stores, its just that they only sell crappy personal computers, fully assembled. The only places that sell parts sell used parts from a few years ago. Also, I don't have the know-how to DIY unfortunately. Its something that I always wanted to learn but never got around to.

Wow. Only if you look in the wrong shops (e.g. medium size general electronics stores such as Bigcamera and shops that sell used computers). You should definitely try stopping by Akihabara if you get the chance to go to Tokyo
I'm not that familiar with Osaka, but there's a huge Yodobashi Camera store with a sizeable DIY section right next to Umeda station (which is virtually the same as Osaka station). Otherwise you might want to try shops like Laox (Osaka branch at the bottom) or Sofmap Nipponbashi (日本橋), Namba (なんば). If you're looking for cheap, but obscure shops then kakaku.com is quite handy.
However if you don't want to learn to build a DIY system you could just stop by a large computer store (e.g. Yodobashi Camera Umeda) and ask the people working there. I'm sure they would be able to help you out. |
