Here's the idea that could/should make smartbombs a VIABLE and VERSATILE weapon at the same time.
When you are in the "fitting screen", you can select the "blast angle" of any smartbomb. Just like you select your scanner angle, and only have 360/180/90/30 (spatial) degrees options. Now, here's the trick: when selecting a lower "angle", you get extra range and damage. Let's say something around these figures: +100% range and +30% damage for 180 degrees angle +175% range and +50% damage for 90 degrees angle +225% range and +60% damage for 60 degrees angle +250% range and +66% damage for 30 degrees angle
All damage is applied "facing forward of camera" just like scanner angle is applied. __ Always question everything. Including yourself. My skills (on BIG public site) |

You could even tie this into the "Energy Pulse Weapons" skill, allowing only 360 degrees selection if you have L1, add 180 option at L2, up to 30 degrees option at L5
A large standard smartbomb would have a max range of 17.5 km with the 30 degrees option, deal 2/3 extra damage, but only in a much smaller "slice" of space (which you can select). __ Always question everything. Including yourself. My skills (on BIG public site) |

not a bad idea but point less imo.
one thing they might wana improve with the smartys that you can set them to dmg only war targets or only -10 sec pilots and or someone with -10 standing to you, after all they are called "smart bombs"
but yeah i see the complication about only dmging some one thing not all of them but if we ad your idea in to this the "smart bomb" might auto select the angle and only blast on the selected target of dmg.

Edited by: Akita T on 23/10/2006 04:13:20 Scanner as is implemented "now" on TQ works relative to camera, not relative to ship orientation. Turret tracking is relative to "absolute" space (i.e. absolute transversal speed instead of radial speed relative to own ship orientation).
Having smartbombs automatically fire in the direction of a certain "target" would make them not much different from turrets, but it would remove all tracking issue while still remaining an AoE weapon, so probably pretty overpowered. Having them firing manually would be both challenging and fun... and certainly a lot experience-of-pilot dependant (much akin to keeping appropriate transversal) rather than anything else, as you'd have to take ("manually") into account distance to target, friendly/enemy targets in range, and even lag.
Yep, lag would be the only factor that makes you want to fit anything other than a 30 degree angle in any "dogfight" scenario, to be honest.

Top idea! How much RP vlaue would there be when two mighty battleships pull up along side each other and unload with their 30 degree angled smart bomb. "We are running along side captain! They have their ports open and are rolling their guns sir." "Ay Smith, load the grapeshot and fire at will. Have the men pull the rigging and keep them at starboard."
Make this happen now.

The only bad thing i see about it depending on player skills to keep the camera at ships is that players will specialize in it and wtfpwn anyone with it and it will also make it even harder for ppl like me with ****ty fps. hey atleast now i can click orbit and just activate/deactivate modules as i see appropriate and thus dont need 60 fps.

Edited by: Akita T on 23/10/2006 06:45:42 Hence, the "pilot skill" issue... trying to remain at near-maximum SB range, where you can focus your blasts properly on the desired target(s) even with lower FPS
Or, if you know you have that issue (not being able to stay at max range), fly with 60 degrees angle instead of 30 degrees, the damage output is not much lower. Heck, even 90 degrees ain't that bad... that's like what, a "keep them on the screen" challenge level ? __ Always question everything. Including yourself. My skills (on BIG public site) |
