I think the asthetic value would be great, but don't expect to bother with the trigger. Unless the joystick has a hotkey function that can select a large slot with a button and enable it with the trigger, just to get too gung ho - youll just look dumb.

I'd like to see a switchable first/third person view option, but i dont think the game is cut out for joystick control. The only ship-type you could reasonably expect to get a decent performance from with a joystick would be a shuttle IMO.

I'm sorry but like most others have said I don't think EVE is cut out for joysticks. Unless there is free-roaming spaceflight (Freespace anyone?) then a joystick would be useless.

Not to mention, you'd have to have a complete overhaul of all collision types, have collisions mean something, avoid the whole "exact collision" bugs all over again(why the bubble came), have seperate targetlocations like shield emitter etc(to please the pilots) and on and on

I figure the main reason small ship pilots would want fly by stick is to 'jink' on an attack run past a larger less mobile target. Maybe this could be implimented another way, and be able to make a few (4 to 6, not 20) well fitted frigates a threat to a lone BS, rather than a joke.
Talking of attack runs, having someway to do that without having to spend 30 seconds on the first inbound run would be nice. That said, the stealth bomber may be able to do that now, stay cloaked on the inbound run, drop the bomb and run like hell whilst 'jinking' to avoid being hit too hard by return fire.
By jinking I mean small rapid course alterations, so as not to present a target with no change in position within the gun sight when approaching a ship directly. IRL, pilots do not fly strieght and level in a combat zone, why do we have to in eve? Even if it was only in relation to one ship, it may open up more tactical options to both attacker and defender.

I doubt joystick flight would be very practical with current internet technology and would also introduce the potential for "speedhacks" to improve response time thus giving one player an advantage over others. But I would like to see a manual control mode for positioning and aligning your ship. Use a hotkey to toggle manual computer control. When in manual control the ship can be pitched and yaw by left click and dragging the mouse. Roll could be handled by Shift click dragging the mouse. Forward speed is managed by +/- keys or whatever 2 keys you bind to that function. Reverves speed is also achevable by using same 2 keys but only 1/4 of the ships natural forward speed is attainable in reverse. This would allow you to align your ship for attack ot warps and to be able position your ship for kewl screenshots.

Well I disagree with any type of fps views, but manual control would be nice, at least for smaller ships. It would make flying smaller ships more fun and entertaining. I also don't see how this would change gameplay to much, and would really only affect how smaller ships can react in combat. I.E quickly upping their transversal, making quick movements to the sides, moving in and out of range with greater effectiveness. speed, and turning ability of ships would still be factored in as usual, and CCP could always keep in how ships are regularly controlled. And I know for some, point and click methods of control are seen as to much of an RTS style.

They just need to start working on Eve 2.0 and make it to where you can pilot with a joystick in that version and create some method of character transfer from Ev to Eve 2.0. No ships, credits or anything.... just characters with skill points. Maybe run a huge storyline event at the end that explains why everything is starting with a blank, fresh slate.

well if you just had the option for it, you could always in laggi situations just press"esc" and go back to normal eve mode. so it would just be a nice adding, which would make inty's alot easyer to control, not to talk about the fun it would give ___________________________________________ Humans take everything that is beautiful and sweet and turn it into something horrifying and ugly.

I could've sworn I read somewhere that CCP was considering adding Joystick controls for new Asteroid Dungeons (and only in those situations).
In my opinion, they should just make a single-player version EVE Client for PS3, Wii, and X360 where you can download it from their online stores for like $12 and you can log in with your credentials to fly through a some missions getting to use any of your ships combined with their fittings and your skills to play through these missions with the more emmersive control scheme. This way they're branching out to consoles, not changing the PC online experience, adding variety, letting people play their ships with an analog stick (or Wiimote) and experience a more first hand story-driven game based on the EVE-universe.
Another added bonus would be that whenever something big in the story of EVE happens, they can make some levels where you can feel like you were a part of either causing it, or trying to prevent it, or what-have-you.
Just a thought. Though personally, I'd like to see this too, and I've made my own thread long ago asking for this as well. But if they do the joystick controls in dungeons, I'd still be quite happy.
Now if they could just let you enter planet atmospheres, that'd be another cool place to have manual control...

Thanks MotherMoon, for reminding me where I read about what I was talking about.
From: http://www.mmo-gamer.com/?p=173 "Nathan Richardsson: We have a number of ways to expand EVE, first and foremost is öinwardsô, which is our current strategy. There are so many locations within EVE which you canæt interact fully with yet and thatæs where weære heading first. Weære now building environments inside space stations with corporate offices and headquarters, going into the ships with a CaptainÆs Quarter, player starbases where they could control its defenses and other corporate infrastructure.
Further out, weære seeing planets playing a pivotal role in the future of EVE. The industrial, exploratory and warfare opportunities there, which tie heavily into the economic fabric of EV,E are immense. Itæs all player controlled; thatæs the beauty of it. WeÆre creating tools and a landscape with resources and itæs up to the pilots to utilize that to their advantage and build an empire.
Working with celestial environments is also an area for expansion. Populating immense asteroids with an industrial or pirate outpost, joystick-based combat inside asteroid dungeons, hostile environments to build up an industrial base to exploit itæs resources ù anything you can imagine inside space is an opportunity for expansion.
We also have space itself to work with through outwards expansion. Space is endless and we still donæt know whatæs out there, whatæs on the other side of the EVE gate nor what happened to Earth and itæs civilization. We donæt know what the Jovian race have been up to, closed off in their own section of space. Its outer boundaries unknown to us"

I dont like the idea of FPS style shooting, but I have wanted to at least steer by stick for a while. Double clicking is less than accurate, as its not a radial vector out from your ship. That makes it impossible to navigate on a straight line unless its a line towards a navigable object in range. You cant, for instance, align your ship towards a distant stargate or base without using the warp command or carefully aligning your camera and clicking.
I also would love the ability to rotate your ship while at zero velocity. Let you align up with the stargate in a mission, or line up towards a base, so you can warp out quicker, for instance, or line yourself up towards your next target so you can start moving forward right away when you're finished with your current action.

I'm fairly new to EVE, but for what it's worth I'd love the idea of having an FPS component in the game. I'm really liking EVE for the adult, strategic, long term aspect, but sometimes I'd like to relive that Freelancer excitement without having to dig up another game.
The asteroid dungeon system sounds perfect for that; hopefully it'll include mouse-drag controls (Freelancer style) as well as stick controls. I can even see that sort of navigation playing a role outside of dungeons. After all, what's the difference between manually piloting your ship via joystick and telling your ship to stay in range of a certain object? Either one can be made an option for navigation without hurting anyone's current style of play. As for gunnery and aiming game mechanics, that can all stay the same. Missiles still lock on. Turrets still rely on transverse velocity. Slow ships still turn slowly. And so on.. The only thing that changes is that instead of using a very clunky double click navigation, you have the option to fly more elegantly.
As an added bonus of this feature, I think that it would help bring fresh blood to the game. All those would-be fighter pilots that stay away because they're still waiting for that space sim FPS (that's never coming) would finally have a reason to play EVE.

Well, I'll tell you what. When CompanyX DOES discover a harmonious blend of First or Third Person shooter with the amazing depth, complexity, and overall feel of EVE, all packaged nicely in an MMO, with full character customization and the ability to leave the ship at stations or land on planets.... (At this point, the closest game to achieving this is Tabula Rasa) ... The Ultimate Space Exploration MMO will have been born.
If I were in CCP's position, research and development in that direction would be the wisest and most profitable of any other internal direction they could take. In my humble opinion, CCP already has a firm and comfortable lead on any other competitors and a solid player-base upon which to build. New technologies/expansions in the above listed directions could only benefit the company AND community at large.
In fact, I find it humourous that a game so futuristic would be populated by a group of conservative luddites.

I don't think anyone said that they wouldn't enjoy such a game, or that "we" have any sort of aversion to new technology in EVE. I just don't think turning EVE into a twitchy FPS is necessarily the direction things should be going, and a lot of people apparently agree.
It's also a bit ironic, you calling people who feel that way "Luddites." After all, the ships in EVE are currently directed by our minds, with the actual grunt work of the movement controlled by the computer. You are advocating removing the computer control and mind link, and have us yank on a mechanical stick for even the most basic of movements. Seems like THAT is the definition of "Luddite" to me!

I believe it would certainly be more interesting than ctrl-clicking to target, clicking a button labeled "Orbit" and then sitting back pressing a few function keys once in a while. A little "twitch" HAS to be better than the slumber-party action EVE has now, as far as ship control is concerned.

I'd love joystick controls, as long as the other 30000 people playing at the same time as me didn't get to use them.

Maybe part of the problem is you're flying the wrong kind of ships? Flying a Vaga, Machariel, or turret Inty won't make EVE a space dogfight sim, but it might be enough to keep you more interested. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Because inertia is a *****. Ever compare the max velocity and mass of, say, a Rifter to an F-16? A rifter with an afterburner on goes nearly 50% faster, and it's the size of a 747.

Edited by: Ezekiel Sulastin on 09/10/2007 15:53:39 This would maybe make sense with frigates/interceptors. Maybe.
Everything else, I posit, would not be fun to fly AT ALL with a joystick, given their massive inertia and crap turning radius (go fly "capships" in Allegiance to see what I mean. BTW, their concept of a capship size seems to be equivalent to a cruiser ... the game itself is based mainly around fighter-sized craft). This isn't Starfighter Game XVIII; most of our common ships would be considered quite large in most fighter games.
Also, all you'd really be doing is flying around while your turrets did all the real shooting. Not that fun, tbh.

Edited by: Berexia Cannin on 10/10/2007 13:54:25 well FPS can be laggy but ive played MechWarrior 4, and WoW. yeah dial-up users will have serious issues but the broadband users (and thats most of us now)really shouldnt have much of a problem.
in wow you could have large scale pvp fights 32 people, 50 people ect. the lag issues ive had were not from bandwidth but from lack o ram.
and in the case of mechwarrior 4 32 people in constant battles on a newer computer say 3yrs old and broadband , virtually no lag.
i say put in joystick support but dont do away with keyboard/ mouse controll. i mean really it shouldnt change much if any in the way of lag. but with a joystick a chase cam view would be nice.

The only solution to this (and I as well would love to directly control my ship) would be to add instances and only allow free flight in those instances.
Thus the global MMO won't suffer from lag. The developers would need some more servers to manage those instances of course. Another solution would be going like Guild Wars (servers managing the MMO parts and clients managing the instance parts). -- Hialmar |
