About me: I've been watching the alliance tournament for years, and it is one of my favorite things in EVE. Last year I gave it a shot and was the FC and captain for the Razor team (we lost to Hydra Reloaded in the semifinals).
Last year's AT format was not very good (sorry). Due to the growing interest in the AT, many teams applied and many teams never got a chance to qualify. Beyond that, the 2-round Swiss system made it harder for teams to advance if they performed well in their first round (you would get an easier second round opponent if you eeked out win rather than stomped the other team, an absolutely ludicrious mechanic). The Swiss system does not work when there are only two rounds. In addition to that, the metagaming in the group stages was ridiculous and non-competitive. Our team was forced to metagame or be-metagamed, and nobody on the team liked doing it. Only the final knockout stage was fair and competitive except the last match, but meh, that is nearly unavoidable.
The solution? It needs to be inclusive, fair, and resistant to metagaming. This, of course, depends on the resources and time available from CCP. A double-elimination tournament would be very good, but there is no way CCP has enough time to devote to it. The next best choice may be a 2-stage tournament, where teams are ranked in the first stage and the second stage is single elimination, probably using the top 32 teams.
The first stage needs to have three fights to properly rank teams. The first round of the first stage is randomized. Following that, teams are ordered first by wins and then then by points, and each subsequent round (assuming 120 teams) pairs 1vs120, 2vs119, 3vs118, etc. For those of you that are good with math, that's a lot of fights. Assuming 120 teams, that would be 180 fights just to rank the top 32 teams. If CCP is serious about having a good tournament, they will find a way to do this quickly and efficiently. To help reduce the initial number of teams, maybe CCP can increase the entrance fee, and increase the time characters are required to be in their corps/alliances in order to participate. CCP could also enforce a minimum corp age, something like "only players that are in corps that are older than 6 months can participate."
The second stage is a simple single-elimination tournament with the top 32 teams. This is broadcasted as usual.
TL:DR I suggest a two-stage tournament. The first stage should have three rounds, pairing the top and bottom ranked teams after round one. The second stage is a single elimination knock-out tournament with 32 teams, again pairing the top and bottom ranked teams. |

If I was to format a tournament -----------
128 team NCAA basketball style bracket, single elimination.
128 ----> 64 ----> 32 -----> 16-------> 8 --------> final four -------> last 2
Rules -
Arena style like before. 200km diameter
No pirate implants No faction / cosmos ect. No cloaks
Only allowed 1 logi ship (includes t3) Only 1 ECM ship
No other rules. No silly point system. 10 ships If you want to bring ten BS then fine, but 10 tengus will kite the hell out of you ect. This way we can actually get a variance with the gangs.
Anyways my philosophy is less is more, so thats what i would do |

Logistics are a viable method of gang warfare. A limited size fleet necessarily limits the number of logistics due to lessening of dps. It is self-limiting. No reason to have a hard limit. There is nothing wrong with spider tanking for similar reasons.
Hard limit on ECM ships is silly for the same reason.
Seems to me you just want to brawl without having to think. Small gang warfare (warfare in general) should involve some thinking. Not just shoe-horning as much dps and tank as possible into your ship.
No other rules. lol. Okay, I put a cyno on one ship and drop titans. gf
Points are needed to break ties.
The only thing that you say that makes sense is not having a point limit as to which ships you can bring. Ships are worth points for scoring. But that should not limit which ships you choose to bring.

+1 Agree ...
the extra rounds can serve as "training" grounds as well In this I wouldn't mind if the qualifier rounds would extend well beyound your suggestion. No need to see 2 well trained teams duke it out together like last tournament .... ah well, they both deserved 1st spot. |

I've enjoyed every tourney since I've played the game and honestly wish they were more than a once a year thing. I think sevyn nine makes a good point on the tourney format though I don't support the vetting idea myself.
I'd like to add that to 'open up the tourney' to additional smaller alliances and corps having quarterly prelim's would be good for the subscriber base. Adding to that vibe it would be fun (I think) to have QTR 1 (Frigs), QTR 2 (Cruisers), QTR 3 (BS), and the Tourney.
I do believe that while the tourney is one of best and most fun things in EVE; having a battlegrounds (WOW) pvp format in any way will kill the best part of the game. |

I bet CCP chooses a format that supports the use of Tier 3 BC.

Shameless bump, in case CCP is thinking about the format for the next tourney. |

O GOD PLEASE. ive wanted to participate in the alliance tournament but have noticed that there are very large ISK related expenses that are not "part" of the tournament and this is keeping some of the smaller alliances from competing. i would very much like to see new faces in the alliance tournament. or even have the chance to participate in the tournament. |

Meh, better way to run the tourney and shake up eve at the same time:
No two alliance entries can be blue with each other. If two or more alliances are blue with each other, they only get 1 entry among all of them. (This would last for say, a month lead up, and the duration of the tournament. Bluing before the end results in one of the teams being disqualified.)

Haha, oh wow.
You really do not have the faintest clue what you're talking about. This has nothing to do with being blue or not. |
