So, I'm out in my mining alt. The ice belt has 2 ships in it, one of them mine.
There are so many secure containers out here that in places they totally obscure the belt.
This situation has gotten worse and worse over the years I have played eve.
Devs, don't you think that all these unused cans might be contributing to LAG?
Drones were nerfed in number from 10 to 5 because of lag. Hangers were nerfed with a limit of 1,000 items because of lag. Yet nothing has been done about unused secure containers. Some of these cans have been in place for years.
Perhaps the kindly devs could fix this? How about making secure containers self-destruct if they have not been used for 6 months?
It is worth considering.

They will all be whiped when the belts are moved to the exploration system. I can only hope that they move there with Revelations 3. ______________________________

I can only hope so. However I'll bet good isk that the secure containers will be left right where they are and only the roids will be moved. The secure containers will still be there, contributing to lag.

I think CCP should announce that when Revelations 3 comes, they are wiping out every single can that is in space, no exceptions.
And that cans anchored in space go pop after a month.

It would be nice if some dev took the time to address this topic.
CCP speaks loudly of their continuing efforts to combat lag, yet nothing is done about the millions (?) of abandoned secure containers in space.

While removing the old jet cans would be nice for some with older pc's, it wouldn't really fix anything but a client side lag issue. Those cans are just entries in the database that are not being accessed or updated in any way as long as someone isn't interacting with their contents, name, or position. Which means there is probably very little server side load being created by their existance.
Better things for the dev team to work on to reduce lag imo.

Then it'll serve them right for not setting a bookmark and/or using the ingame notepad and/or using a text editor (pick one) and/or... just using a paper notepad. Or a sticky note. Sticky notes are good.

Considering that CCP still has not bothered to remove sec cans anchored in high sec (where you cannot anchor anymore) that were left there years ago, I think they don't care.
But yea, its kinda obvious that can spam is going to add to lag, at least clientside. Would wiping all the cans that have not been used in over 2 years be too much to ask?

If a miner or ratter is using the can on any regular basis, then the can would be refreshed at least monthly. And if not accessed monthly, then pop. no exceptions, don't care what is inside of the cans.

Old Secure Cans as Content..
Add Decay to Anchoring, so anything anchored and abandoned runs out of power after a time and is scoopable. First the can is safe and secure, then after a time it forgets and unlocks. Then later it becomes unanchored and after that, if it is still there, it goes pop (use the can to reset clock).
New and old pilots get to filch and recycle, old cans go away and Le Skunk gets some time to find his. Every one wins, old cans go away.

I must agree with the OP, in a lot of the belts around the domain area there are 10 - 50x as many cans as there are roids!
from my experience in programing I would also have to say that yes they would be contributing to server load as each and every one of them has to be dealt with by the server.
I think the 6 months thing is a bit too long though and would suggest 3 months or even less, because if a can isn't used in 3 months there is a good chance it won't be used again and if it is only used once every 6 months that is a joke.
As for how to get rid of them maybe an NPC ship that goes around collecting and reprocessing them would be good. that ship could then maybe spawn smaller NPC ships that players could kill to claim some of the reprocessed minerals? This would not only solve the problem but also benifit the players.

Just unanchoring would be enough, I know I'd trawl belts/other places ones find cans looking for free cans once a week or so. Take them back home and repackage for great justice ! Who knows, I might even get some free Ore/Loot :)
A dev comment on the belt cans would be nice, aswell as a time when the belts will move to exploration. If they just annouce all cans in belts will be unanchored and give folks 2 weeks to clear them out, then the rest are free game once the 2 weeks are over. Then they could move belts to exploration and not have cans just floating round.
Note this is just the distribution of the belts using Exploration, you wouldn't have to search for them. ___

This way we keep all our Ammo Caches strewn around the 0.0 and low sec and all the eyesores, however, are quietly disposed of. Those who mine on regular basis will upkeep their cans by using them and the superfluous cans will be gone within a month or so.

You must not have a lot of programming experience.
In EVE there are two types of objects (in space) - mobile and immobile ones. Mobile objects include ships, wrecks, cans, basically anything that can be bumped or tractored. These cause lag due to colision checking and physics calculation for bumping. Immoble objects, which include cans, don't cause nearly as much lag since collision detection for them is much simpler. In addition, they only have a few attributes and are rarely accessed. They take up physical space in the server memory (if that - they may just be stored in the database), but due to their simplicity one player-occupied ship equals about ten cans. So removing them would do little to alleviate server-side lag. It could help with client lag, but not every much as the cans themselves only have one texture and are geometrically simple. ------------ Whiners - Unite! | Posting and You Tarminic - Forum Warfare Specialist. |

While I agree with you, I must point out that it can't possibly be 10 cans = 1 player, because in all honesty there are belts with at least 100 cans in them, times 200 belts. That actually would contribute pretty significantly to lag in such a case =/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience our piracy may have caused you, but, we are pirates and, sadly, this is our way." |

Good news for those of you who dont sisi alot, NPC rats will now attack secure cans even the high sec rats will attack unattended cans in belts (may take them the entire spawn day to kill the can but theyll do it eventually within a single downtime cycle per can)
This change is expected to be in revelations 3. Now about the station cans around the stations and gates in empire.

That's easy, have the sentry guns fire on them because they "present dangerous obstacles to navigation." Just because the smallest ships we use are frigates (ships of the line) and shuttles(the really big, warship grade ones) doesn't mean there are smaller (much smaller) ships. One of those things accidentally clips a can? BOOM! Thousands of deaths a day completely undocumented, and little mourned (next to our crews) by the capsuleers. The empires are just trying to make the world a safer place for others. Of course, this removes easy BM loot storage and gank spots for pirates. :( (unnerf pirates!) That just leaves the cans in SS's and around planets and moons-->Make them less durable?

Uhhh, guys? Have you checked your 'assets' tab lately? There is an 'in space' tab that'll tell you where every one of your cans are. And probably warp you right to it when you get into the system.

Easy solution.....
Make anchored cans automatically un-anchor after 1 month of inactivity (no access by the owner). That'd solve the problem.
Also, imagine the masses of haulers rushing to the belts 1 month after such a change is announced
