I'll start off saying I haven't been apart of anything bigger then a few 5v5's or less through out my eve career. I'm currently training up for cap ships due to being stuck in China for two more years and my laptop being dead so I have a few months work before I get anything put together worth playing on that doesn't cost me a hourly fee.
I read the forum, alot, and I've been following all the blob vs blob threads and such and how long range tends to dominate these scenarios.
Reasons range from the fact that there is less chance of being caught/killed, easier for the whole group to warp to a single spot together, and other tactical choices necessicitated by lag.
But I have to ask, how bad off would a sizable group in a fleet be if they were all blasters and such, waiting until some recon got close enough for them to jump to so they would start at fighting range.
I would think most FC's would be unsure how to hand such a situation considering how prominent the long range stuff is. Would they just try and cut and run because their group wasn't ready to fight at shorter ranges, would they switch targeting to the new ships, or stay on the ones at optimal range?
I hear lag is a big issue why this isn't done, ships arriving and lagging for so long and so close they they will be scramed/webbed/bubbled before they have a chance to load. Would an absence of lag make a close range setup portion of a fleet more likely to be fielded?
Thanks for any opinions, I'm mostly interested in what people think would make something like this more viable to help make the fleet combats a bit less blob at long range style.

Close range fits are used just as much as long range from what I've seen - it's actually more work for your fleet to have covops or ceptors flying ahead to set up multiple snipe points for every point you want to engage at - it's far easier to get a close range fight.

While short range boats, such as the domi for example, are perfectley useable in fleet battles, 100 railguns being used at point blank range is allways more effective than 100 blasters at 150km therefore allways fitting for the best range you can manage is prefrable.
Also i would guess lag is partley a factor why this kind of tactic isent used in large scale fights, but by far the biggest reason is that if you have 50 ships spread out about a 30km radius, the vast majority of your fleet will be out of range of whatever target gets called primary.
If both side of a fleet battle where to be setup for short range, it wouldent be a fleet fight, it'd be 100x 1v1's on the same grid. -

Wouldn't the close range group though have its own FC and I imagine any close range group would have AB's if not some MWD's among them to move around faster like they do in the smaller battles.

Well it can work, but it either goes two ways i found.
1 - You get warped right on top of the enemy fleet and you rip them a new one.
2 - You warp in is off (very hard to get exact with lag) and ships like blasterthron is royally screwed.
Hence what was said above the long range weapons say rails are much more versatile and generally useable.

I want to see the 100 1v1 battle. The sheer carnage that would unfold would be simply glorious.

Close range combat exist, but the FC must be committed on creating that scenario. You must have warp in points form covert ops, to get on top of enemies. Its hard and tricky. But if you do it right the sniper fleet is screwed. 10 Close range BS can *****30 sniper ones when at close range.
If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough |
