Hello! I really like the idea of using a small, fast ship that does not require ammo for 0.0 ratting, especially in hostile areas. I have done some research and both of these ships seems capable of accomplishing it.
Does anyone have any experience with or input about these ships, regarding which one may be more efficient? I.E. does the Crusader's speed make up for its lack of tanking, or is the Retribution still fast enough to escape other players should the system become hostile?
Or am I going in the wrong direction, and should use something more disposable like a Maller?
Thank you for your time!

Retribution do just fine, you don't fall asleep before the ship goes down and you can tank aswell quite a lot. Crusader take ages, can't fit medium pulses without compromising the rest of the shipsand is paparmade :D

I can't say anything about the Maller, but I can vouch that drone ships work well for 0.0 ratting - consider the Arbitrator. The extra mid over the Vexor should make for quite the efficient ratter.
It's unfortunate that they're nerfing the Arbi in Rev 3... =(

Edited by: mallina on 25/10/2007 21:18:55 Arby is only getting nerfed if you used 2 heavies, 2 meds and 1 light. Most people just used 5 Meds and had 5 Lights to fend off Inties and the like, it'l still be able to field 5 Meds in Rev 3, but has twice the drone bay (2 waves of meds, 2 waves of lights? or just 3 waves of meds with different dmg types) ---

There you go. It takes a while in a Crusader. I use the Retribution and it works fine. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [/url] |

The extra damage from the heavies was important for 0.0 ratting, tbh.

Dont lie to the poor people.
5 mediums is plunty enough for angel ratting (I used 5 med exp drones). It took a bit to kill them, and a speed/e-war tank, with nos, but it worked.
And this was back when my skills sucked.

I used 5 mediums too - I won't say that it can't be done. I just consider efficiency important.
Maybe you like to take ages to kill a single spawn... I like killing them and moving on.

Maybe I was a nub and in 0.0 way before I should have been, and thought that killing a 500k battleship spawn in a cruiser was actually good? (no matter the time it took)

It's possible to solo triple 1.5 Guristas spawns with a Vexor and < 1.5M SP - and do so in a "timely" manner. T2 drones helped lots - but it was still faster to have the T1 heavies, IIRC.

*shrug* as a noob I also was using t1 junk... and I was a nub, remember? I thought it was a better idea to use the same type of drone all the way.

True, don't lie to people about being able to rat properly with 5 meds. You're not able to break some tanks without the 2-2-1 loadout. Fact. And that's with drone interfacing 5.
With 5 meds you're good with killing the average rats however. Some larger ones take ages and some cannot be dealt with, end of story.
2-2-1 is the way to go when ratting.

Retribution is fine though even with a Heat Sink II and 4 Med Pulse II it can take some time to kill the higher bounty Battleships.
It does have a small cargo bay however so you have to be choosy with your looting.
That said I still preferred the Retribution to a T1 cruiser.
An Anchored can at a safe spot can help with loot storage.
I use a zealot to rat now due to its mobility and decent firepower with 3 Heat Sinks. Needs a web though to take out those Inties due to lack of drones.
I use an AB over an MWD due to the ability to perma run it.
Harbinger with Beams is also an option.

Retribution, but beware you might not escape bubble camps with interceptors guarding it. Crusader does way too little damage to rat imo.
Retri:
4xmedium pulse IIs , bring alot of conflag and scorch....they do break fast
1xABII
3xHeatsink II 1xCPU 1xSmall T2 rep
packs ****loads of punch, tanks enough and is a fast warper.

Interestingly, I was using nos to sustain my own capacitor. I found that 2 nos and bursting the third actually had the best results. Little did I know at the time (but do now), but the nos was actually affecting the likelihood of the spawn getting off a rep cycle.
It was virtually impossible to take the hail of fire from BC/Cruiser spawns though - I had to leave those well enough alone. The battleship spawns were the best, and I could definitely solo up to triple 1.5's (these were really tough though).
Double 800's was the best money maker for the ship though. Anyway, I agree that the 2-2-1 loadout was really important. Freaking crying shame that they're nerfing the Arbitrator this way... I'm actually really ****ed about it. =(
I *HAD* been considering switching my Caldari alt to Amarr for the Khanid ships and using the Arbi in the mean time, but I think those plans are useless now.

Edited by: Blutreiter on 26/10/2007 16:04:10 Lol, sorry to derail the thread again but...
..."Arbitrator got boosted! Noone should use heavy drones on cruisers!"
Mwahaha, sorry but I need a beer now. P*ssed as hell.
Ratting Arbitrator against angels:
1 Heavy Launcher, 3 highslots free for flavour. 4 Large Shield Extenders 4 Shield Power Relays (or mixed with PDUs... also flavour)
2 Berserker, 2 Valks, 1 Warrior
Fitting plus ship, 5 mil with t1 equip?
Takes down dual 1,8 mil spawns with good skills, triple spawns when pimped with t2 stuff.
5 Valks? Dunno, go kill some cruiser spawns instead... meh.
Cheaper investment than a Retribution, but if you're a fan of Assault Frigates, go for it. Retribution is FUN.

I use the Retribution for ratting Sansha in Stain region. I don't need to join a 0.0 alliance or anything. Turn on the Afterburner (Yes I use an AB because it runs forever), turn on the small armor rep, turn on the guns, and everything runs forever.
Takes a little while to kill certain BS but I've taken down 1.5 mil Sansha's with it by myself.
Oh yeah...DO NOT BUMP INTO ASTEROIDS...THEY ARE ALL YOU HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT OTHER THAN LOCAL GOING UP =P ---
