Hi.
The patch that is currently being deployed will address the stability of the Mac client. I would like to gather your post-patch Mac experience in this thread. I would like to know if you crash more often now, if you are crashing less often or if you are no longer crashing at all. In short, did this patch improve the stability of your client?

So far so good. The patch system worked like a charm and I made 9 jumps and played for an hour without crashing.

Edited by: Jack Reznor on 18/12/2007 19:36:58 Been playing for 2 hours, done 20+ jumps, mined rest of time, all done in highest resolution. Only crashed once, big improvement! Cheers guys. Usually i would have crashed 2 or 3 times under these circumstances, in one resolution lower. BTW, the start-up screen not resetting to 800x600 is great.

From what I've noticed: Crashing far more often, 2 crashes while docked in 15 minutes. Client just drops, no crash report, nothing weird in logs.
EVE Voice "works", in the sense that people can hear what I say, but all incoming audio sounds like it was merged with a helicopter.

Hi there,
I have one that I cant find anywhere else.
Since the 1.01 patch, running Eve on my iMac, I cannot get the market up. It states "Market is not available. Please try again later"
So I logged in on a Vista Laptop, but it works fine there. !
Anyone else on a Mac where market is not working?

I haven't had much luck with post patch yet. I got a nice error message "You can't open the application "EVE Online" because it is not supported on this architecture."
Show package contents reveals only the version.plist and the Resources/transgaming folders are left. I guess its better than deleting boot.ini though. Time to reinstall Eve.

Edited by: pressurewave on 19/12/2007 00:38:37 Still the wackiness on my end - t3 at work, client jumps right up and gets on with business. At home on cable, client takes (on average) 5 minutes to load. A bit ago when I got it loaded the clock sped up to ridiculous speed, and then when I undocked, crashed.
Still no keyboard input while at home (have to enter u/n and p/w with copy/paste from text doc), and also, a new fun issue has cropped up - the client switching screen resolutions. After setting it to 1024, it switched back to 1440 between load menus.
Largest Issue: Playability difference between different internet connections. I measured at 2532.6 kbps on cnet's site and pulled down Download Speed: 6562 kbps (820.3 KB/sec transfer rate), Upload Speed: 486 kbps (60.8 KB/sec transfer rate) from speakeasy, which all seems in order for a cable connection. Anyway, the previous client was working nicely at home and work.
2nd: lack of keyboard input is a major bummer, it prevents realistic debugging attempts
3rd: Load time of client - waiting at a black screen for 3-5 minutes for each load (especially amidst a plague of crashiness) is disheartening.
Pertinent Specs:
Model Name:MacBook Pro 15" Model Identifier:MacBookPro2,2 Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed:2.33 GHz Number Of Processors:1 Total Number Of Cores:2 L2 Cache:4 MB Memory:2 GB Bus Speed:667 MHz Boot ROM Version:MBP22.00A5.B07
Edit note: I'm bummed, sure, but I just wanted to add it's good to know you guys are actively engaged in fixing this issue! Keep it up, folks!

I crashed once all night (~3.5 hours of play). It happened while trying to load an agent portrait. I've noticed that behavior with portraits before. On the up side, I was able to visit a system with 170+ with no crashes. That's definitely an improvement.
The big issue that remains for me is that Voice still will not work. I'm getting the error about lacking a configured gateway. My machine's network settings are correct, as are my basestation's network settings. I've checked both firewalls (machine and basestation) multiple times. I can use other VOIP apps (with very good quality sound). I can't see how this is anything but a problem with the client. I submitted a bug report about the same thing (before today's patch) but it was closed and I was told to open a tech support petition. I did so and received a canned reply about the knowledgebase and checking firewalls and so on. I'm at a loss, here.
I'm running 10.5.1.

Just wanting to add my bit. I played fine for 3.5 hours earlier, jumped to scolluzer, and then bam! Crash to desktop, no error nothing. After that, I would crash within a minute of starting the game, for a total of 6 crashes in about 10 mins. Jumped to another system, same deal. Sometimes it crashes instantly when I move my mouse to the left of the screen, or maybe it's my imagination. Shocker.

Edited by: Pirado IV on 19/12/2007 02:50:55 I've been playing for 3 or 4 hours without a crash, then, I've received an EVE Mail and now I can't play... the game crashes after 1-2 min, always... I'm not opening new windows, I'm not undocking, I'm not closing windows... I just move the mouse around the screen and it crashes.
I tried to deactivate the sound, but it stills crashing. How can I see the crash log?.
I have a 17'' iMac, ATI X1600 and an Intel Soundcard.
Anyway, thanks for support Mac & Linux
Edited: I'm crashing too in the login window :/

Ok, I tried in a Microsoft Windows way... I restarted my user session (not the OS) and now it works again, so I think there was a zombie process walking around when I get the first crash of the day.
Anyone can try if a killall -9 wineserver && killall -9 cider after a crash helps to get the game stable for a while again?
Thanks Nanvel for the console x)

Patching worked without any issues, and the updated client runs without any problems.
Have been playing 2+ hours, 30+ jumps through busy systems (Perimeter and Jita) with no glitches. (though, stability has never been an issue on my Macbook Pro even before the patch)
Thanks for the update, and keep up the good work!

Played a LOT today, without a doubt too much. We capped the night with rescuing a friend's wreck 5 minutes before shutdown at 3 a.m.!
I had one session of cascading crashes... Had to reboot the machine since after the first crash the client was unplayable (crash within 1 minute of restarting the client).
Overall very few crash, much better. But that's only day 1.

Ayr Chron, i'm sure they're working hard to fix the crashes and I really feel the client is more stable now, so, just try helping sending your crash reports or just cancel your accounts, but don't create a bad feeling of the game... all apps in the world have more or less bugs, the difference is they're working quickly to fix it.

Yeah, it makes it more difficult in lowsec because if I try to pull up info about those in Local, there's about a 1-in-3 chance the client will crash. I wind up going without the extra intel.

Windows have a fixed size since the patch. A very inconsistent min. width I must say. CCP if you really need to give windows a fixed width, make them all the same, please. Just looks fugly and is annoying when you try to size down a window that can't go any smaller but another can.
About the rest... its WaY! more stable then before. No more warpgate crashes, no more stuck bewteen warpgates, no more in station crashes, and I played near 8 hours today.
Doesn't mean it doesn't crash. It crashes now randomly when you try to get info on a player or agent. No warnings just straight out of Eve to desktop crash, with no logs...... But overall I'm very happy with the state Eve's now in. Thumbs up from me!

Seems a little more stable, but I still suffer from the crashing issue and the "my console log fills up with errors about sound buffer wraparound at many messages per second issue".
I also still have the resolution and z-buffer related image garbling in the map browser and fitting screens; I'm going to get details on which resolution/z-buffer/pixel formats work and which ones have problems to update my bug report.
I've not tried voice though, so I can't speak on that one.

Generally it seems more stable, went out on an op and did 20 or so jumps no problems. However once we came up against and dictor bubbles ect started being used i crashed, which exactely what was happening the before the patch. My mac client simply crashes out at the first sign of PVP, i'm just waiting to log back in and find myself back at a station crying over the loss of a ship :)

I truly like this game.I abhor crashing. I run 50-70 fps.I have dsl connection that is 244mps. You get what you pay for, I'm paying for a stble game I don't have to restart my computer 15 times a day.If I have to do that I will find a new game.

MacBook Pro First connection, fresh install, reactivated my expired trial account from 2005... only used four times.
Initially the screen background was scrolling like an old, out of synch movie. It settled down after about 3 minutes with three blank character slots. Nothing seemed to do anything. I finally got the tutorial screen up, but could not start character creation.
I gave up, hit escape and found the option screen. I changed the default resolution from 1900x1200 to 1680x1050. I was then able to see my old trial account character...
Now to attempt to enter the game...

Well, I got into the game, created a new character as I couldn't remember how to play the existing one... only the have the system freeze in the middle of the first tutorial. Sound and image movement stopped. No keys / functions worked. Hitting escape did nothing. The mouse could move the cursor, but not much else worked. After about every minute or so, something would change, but control did not return.
Finally, I held down the power button and turned off the system.
Not exactly a warm welcome back to the world of Eve.

Is this because of extremely slow (<1fps speed)? If so, I fiddled with the z-buffer and colour (?) settings when I first got the client, and it went from being rediculously unplayable to about 60fps.

The stability of the client has improved somewhat, but is not yet totally stable. With Trinity, I was sometimes crashing once every 2 hours, and sometimes crashing 5 times per hour (!). Typically reaching stargates or launching from stations. With 1.01, so far I have seen crashing once every 2-5 hours or so. Not frequent crashing. (with less frequency, it's harder to take a view until more datapoints are in). This is a good step in the right direction. Keep up the good work MacBookPro (intel), 2GB RAM, X1600 Radeon, OSX 10.4.11

Originally by: Robert Quine The stability of the client has improved somewhat, but is not yet totally stable. With Trinity, I was sometimes crashing once every 2 hours, and sometimes crashing 5 times per hour (!). Typically reaching stargates or launching from stations. With 1.01, so far I have seen crashing once every 2-5 hours or so.
My experience is similar. Fewer crashes to desktop but they still occur with some regularity. Just had one after trying to use the in-game browser but they've happened while doing other things both in-station and in space.
Here are the last few entries of the console log (there were 4000 similar entries generated in a 2 minute period!)

Looking in my console logs I saw the same type messages about sound, so I completely disabled audio. I'm in a state right now where my client crashes within seconds while I'm just docked in Nein. I'm unable to play at all. Yesterday I played pretty much all day without problem. Late last night I got into this crash loop and now I can't play at all. Maybe it's some cosmic force telling me not to play today....
So I opened up console and captured the lines that happen immediately after the crash:
Dec 20 10:50:16 balder /Local/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/cider: CGSResolveShmemReference : offset exceeds bounds 2007-12-20 10:50:17.565 cider[12963] An uncaught exception was raised 2007-12-20 10:50:17.565 cider[12963] Error (1000) creating CGSWindow Dec 20 10:50:17 balder /Local/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/cider: CGSResolveShmemReference : offset exceeds bounds 2007-12-20 10:50:17.565 cider[12963] *** Uncaught exception: <NSInternalInconsistencyException> Error (1000) creating CGSWindow err:seh:EXC_DefaultHandling Unhandled exception code c0000026 flags 1 addr 0x0
Yay for buffer overflow and uncaught exceptions!

For those who get a loop of crashes after 1 minute playing after a crash, simply try to restart your OS X session (or try to look and kill the zombie process):
Open a console and write: killall -9 wineserver killall -9 cider
So you can play again =)

Yea the : DSOUND_CalcPlayPosition Wraparound detected!DSOUND_CalcPlayPosition Wraparound detected! I get tons of as well. But im not sure if it is was causing the crash. Usually when i crash if i quickly look at console i get some other error messages like some file or drive not found.
Would be great to get all of it fixed though and thanks ccp for starting this thread.

I get this a lot in the console, but so far, there have been 0 crashes to desktop. A few freezes, which I think were related to lag or system load, and not the client. Still smoother than a baby's behind on my Macbook Pro. _________________ I design icons.

I'm pleased to report that I haven't crashed once since the patch. The only issue that occurred was when the space background texture failed to render and was inexplicably replaced with a garbled image of an album cover from my iTunes library. Anyway, it only happened once, so I didn't think much of it.
Setup: MacBook Pro 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 10.4.11.

I am happy to report that with this new patch Eve-mac client has made wonders to my setup. Now I can quite reliably play EVE on my Santa-Rosa Macbook (x3100) even though it is not in the supported gfx list! Before I could play only for minutes and do nothing much than cahnge skill, now I have played for hours everyday since tuesday and only once the client has crashed on me! So please don't break the new Macbook, when you fix everybody elses problems :)

Edited by: C Identity on 23/12/2007 15:24:11 Crashes still happening to me, iMac Al 24Inch, mostly around jumpgates.
But the follow messages keep rolling over my console:
[0x0-0xf00f0].com.transgaming.EVEOnline err:dsound:DSOUND_CalcPlayPosition Wraparound detected! Secondary buffer may loop!
Disabling sound in EVE stops these messages (obvious).
But these error definitely makes the whole system more 'sluggish' for sure. With sound enabled in EVE the dock for instance responds sluggish, while with sounds disabled it responds like you expect it to respond.

I say the client is working a lot better. I played for 2 days and only had one crash as I was exiting a station. Jumps were always a problem and I haven't had a jump crash so far. There are a few graphical glitches here and there but overall it's getting better :)

The client is much more stable. I've had 3 crashes over at least 10-15 hours of play, as opposed to crashes at least every hour pre 1.01
Crashes appear to occur in transitional states mainly (into Dock, Jumping), although since I haven't had many crashes I may not be very precise.

Just now i finished training a skill. It kept hanging saying training iminet but would not finish. I hit esc then quit game. When I relogged in all my preferences had been deleted and I had to click accept on eula again like i was playing it for the 1st time. About that time that this happened my console showed this :

I'm now having crashes to desktop after just logging in. It's reproducible every time again. -Very- annoying Christmas. Always this in the console:

In general my stability has increased markedly, although I crash once every few hours. I can usually just restart the client and log back in and keep playing, although crashes become a little more frequent. If I disconnet my internet connection and restart the CPU I get max stability back. Overall my performace is much better. MacOSX 10.4.8 Intell 2.33Ghz dual core MacBook Pro.

Overall more stable client, still issues with crashes when clicking on a character to get info on them,
Overall time played til client gets clunky is way longer than I ever should be playing.
Most crashes seem to be revolving around retreiving information on a neutral character that has no portraits loaded. (Rarely happens when I do it on familiar corpmates)
Only other issue I can think of is text boxes tend to revert to all channels on one tab after a crash despite being "Normal" for days at a time when playing as usual.

Now I'm getting crashes again. Seems to happen after an extended time in game (+4 hours maybe). Game crashes out when entering/leaving a station and now I can't get past the char selection screen when you log in. I select on my char and the client just crashes. If I reboot it works fine until it happens again.

Gameplay is more stable on my MBP (10.4.11 2GB RAM) but only with audio disabled. Client occasionally disconnects, although usually (but not always) cleanly now. With audio enabled, client blackscreens, audio stutters and garbles. If not in windowed mode, have to crash and restart the system.
#1 issue is stability - Random crashes and disconnects are doubleplusungood. Audio would be nice, but isn't critical. Uptime and having to crash my machine in order to recover from a client hang is.
Thanks for the OS X client, and for the work you're doing to improve it. It's appreciated.

Maybe a bit more stable, but I still get the occasional random CTD. Several have mentioned they get a consistent crash when trying to show info on another player - I get the same thing. I've had another occasional problem since the 1.01 patch, though, not mentioned by others. Namely, every now and then the game will stutter to a stop and freeze - I then have to force quit and restart it. Very irritating when it happens in combat. When docked at stations sometimes things go totally haywire, with station lights flashing rapidly and the time clock at lower left cycling through different hours as if the game were fast-forwarding; menus don't work and I have to force quit and restart.

after a couple weeks of testing i can now say that the client is still as unreliable as it was from the start. it might not crash just as much, but that doesn't change the fact that my gameplay is being severely hindered in various ways:
1) i don't dare to open ANY kind of info, esp. on characters. somewhat annoying and dangerous as a pvper.
2) client may just close without warning.. preferrably when you least need it - like in the middle of a fight or while warping in. lost many ships to this, not one of them got reimbursed. i stopped trying to petition it or file bug reports, because the gm response tries telling me its my problem.
3) system map in map browser does not show 80% of the time, making scanning for targets a total drag
4) performance, fps-wise, is awful for the kind of graphics eve classic is driving. c&c 3 was also ported/wrapped by transgaming, has WAY more complex graphics and is running similiar to windows performance + stable. as are all of the recent ea titles i tried out.
simply put: the wrapper lacks quality which could easily be solved by more/better programming and we all know it.
i'm not gonna put any of this "i'm gonna quit!" BS in here, but seriously ccp, you are quite pushing it.

After several crashes where when I start the game again. I have to click accept(eula) again like im a new player. I noticed the config file is different if you remove your eve prefs from your user folder and let the current app write a new set of prefs. So now ive removed(backedup) my old prefs and am using the new prefs written by the current version.
One major difference noted in another post for multiple clients:
in eve's instructions:
http://support.eve-online.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=403
Instructions on how to run EVE in Windowed mode on the Mac
1. Edit the /Users//Library/Preferences/Eve Online Preferences/config file
2. Search for [sdldrv] then look a couple lines below for the fullscreen entry which looks like: "FullScreen" = "1"
3. Change the 1 to 0 in the FullScreen setting
These settings are no longer in the new config file. You now have :
[sdldrv] ;"ScreenDepth" = "32" "Desktop" = "Y" "Enable3D" = "1" "ShowFPS" = "0" "DisplaySettingsDialog" = "0"
[x11drv] "AllocSystemColors" = "100" "CopyDefaultColors" = "0"
Where as in the old prefs you had:
[sdldrv] "DefaultScreenWidth" = "800" "DefaultScreenHeight" = "600" "ScreenDepth" = "32" "Enable3D" = "1" "FullScreen" = "0" "ShowFPS" = "0" "DisplaySettingsDialog" = "0"
[x11drv] "AllocSystemColors" = "100" "CopyDefaultColors" = "0" "PrivateColorMap" = "N"
If you ran the updater it does not delete the old config file with no longer valid settings. To get rid of it you have to delete your user/prefs/eve then launch the app and let in write a new prefs folder.
Im not sure if this will keep it from crahing so much but hopefully I will not keep loosing my prefs.

I'm playing on a brand new Mac. Started EVE on 12/17 and it worked pretty well up until two nights ago. Now it takes about 10 minutes to log in, ten minutes to undock / dock, etc. The game has become unplayable.
I deleted my cache, deleted the entire game and downloaded a fresh version, etc. - no luck.
Any help forthcoming?

An issue I've been having which hasn't really come to light until lately is when I play for quite some time, and log off, I can relog onto my original character with no issues, however if I try to log into another account on a different character it will almost immediately crash when I first enter the game on the character.
Restarting fixes this, however I'm not sure why it would do this in the first place.

Yes, this issue still appears a lot, especially whenever I have Safari or other memory-hungry applications open. It's freaking me out. _________________ I design icons.

Edited by: Capn Hack on 02/01/2008 06:01:48 ive had both the systemuiserver systemwide ctd bug and the eve-only sound buffer wraparound bug and havent seen a lot of advice for them, so here goes.
if you have the systemuiserver one where it crashes once and then crashes become incredibly frequent, not only in eve but also other apps, then logging out of your osx account and back in will fix it and is faster/gentler on the hardware than a reboot. its possible that killing a certain process will work without logging out, but currently i dunno which process that could be (its not systemuiserver since that crashes on its own).
if you have the sound buffer bug you can stop it by just turning off audio from within the game; sadly thats the only way. id be interested in knowing whether the sound output device is whats causing this one, so can those who have it post what kinda output theyre using and have plugged in (usb, built in, minijack, optical)?
ive tried everything i can think of to lessen the impact of these bugs but no alterations to the config file, deleting of prefs, or downloading the client anew will stop them popping up. turning off audio and logging out does make them easier to live with until they are fixed tho.
edit: almost forgot, the missing f drive error that pops up when launching the game can be fixed by just removing or commenting out (with ;;) the [Drive F] section in the config.ini file in your eve online preferences folder. that particular drive is redundant and isnt used by the game, so you can safely get rid of that bit to reduce the log clog-up. also, if you play in windowed mode with the new version you shouldnt set the desktop value to y, rather it should be set to whichever resolution you wanna play at, otherwise youll get more console messages. the line should read something like the following: "Desktop" = "1280x1024"

I found a curious problem during the last week. I have been playing EVE with the Mac-client well enough since 1.0.1 update on my Macbook. Some sporadic crashes have occured but almost bearably less than before. Last week I however made a new alt and after that the client started to crash every time in the caharacter selection window. I tried every trick - clear cache, delete prefs, boot, reinstall - nothing helped. But I was able to log in and play with a friends account! Until I srcapped the new character (with an Bootcamped client) and voila - the Mac-client started again normally! The only explanation I can imagine is, that the character's image was somehow erroneus. That would also explain other crashes reported to happend sometimes when you click on a pilot in chat or look at the info. Sometimes the character images have some ****ch or property that the Mac client cant handle. Hope this helps to solve the problem.

Nice job so far withthe mac client. I crash less once or twice in a 5 hour session. The audio is better but still giving me a problem. the sound starts of ok some distortion. it however degrades to blips and then to no sound. is the a fix or work around to restore the sound?
thx,
Clee

I confirm that the instructions for running in windowed mode are no longer correct, since the config file seems to have changed. With a totally fresh install of eve into a fresh install of OS X, it appears to be impossible to run in windowed mode now.
Please update the instructions for running in windowed mode and running multiple instances of the client in OS X. I was able to run in windowed mode with my last installation.

The instructions are still broken, describing an old version of the config file. You should also document the <command><return> trick there.

Bummer... Im running on a MacBook. 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM. It flows all nice, no lag, no problems, and then, at random things each time, it locks up entirely. The client doesnt quit, it just freezes... I'm forced to hard-reboot my machine. First program that requires that... Amazingly, the EVE developers seem to have made the ultimate mac-crasher. Hogging the memory and CPU, leaving no room for force quitting...

I just installed 10.5.2+graphics update and tried EVE on my Macbook x3100. Seems to be running well enough, so far. Pressing the esc in both window and fullscreen mode still crashes to desktop, but this time I even got an error message:
Feb 12 10:59:38 AMBDX [0x0-0x26026].com.transgaming.EVEOnline[0]: err:seh:EXC_DefaultHandling Unhandled exception code c0000026 flags 1 addr 0x68d5c8
This seems to be a problem with this particular and offically unsupported machine/graphics, since no one else has reported this kind of behaviour. Hope the error msg helps some to track the problem.
Anyways, I will keep on testing... and playing

I'm removing sticky on this and locking. New "Post patch issues"-thread will be up after 1.1 is deployed.
