I would giggle like a little school girl if this would be true!
The baldur's gate site went online within the time frame to fit, even if no official response has come from Atari that owns the rights to Baldurs Gate.
How wonderful wouldn't it be with a new REAL rpg? |

What exactly would it be though? The story was wrapped up in the trilogy and the setting was nothing special. The gameplay is also something they're unlikely to reproduce in a modern game, so I'm certainly not getting excited about this at this point. It sound more like a desperate attempt to ***** out a popular old franchise one more time in an effort to get a few more dollars out of the old girl. It could be great, but at this moment I'm expecting the phantom menace level of crap/franchise destruction. |

The "original" baldurs gate 3 project that got canceled several years ago were not supposed to involve any characters from the previous BG games (however it was said back then that some icewind dale NPCs were to return).
Either way, I don't think they will keep building on the old story, but rather keep the name to build up hype since I guess they will still be in the Forgotten Realms and Faerun with the D&D rules. Even if it's not the same series the name Baldur's Gate creates a certain feeling and expectations in people.
Atleast that is what I think, if the rumor would be true. |

Argh, NO! >_< the last thing we need is a Baldurs Gate without Black Isle devs making it, EA got lucky with Mass Effect because there were clearly some very loyal people there who wanted to finish the trilogy with style, but if we get people like who made Dragon Age 2 consider the game screwed before it even starts.
That site doesn't look official to me because anyone can put up a music player like that and all those portraits are from the original games.

Baldur's Gate page source has couple interesting lines:
at the start:
Quote:February 29, 2012 Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine
Take heart fellow adventurers, for you have curried the favor of Boo, the only miniature giant space hamster in the Realm!
at the end of source:
Quote:I can teach you how to use your wrath.
The interesting bit there is that they might actually use infinity engine (or upgraded version of it).
Since Baldur's Gate is actually a city in Faer++n so why wouldn't there be lots of other adventures to explore besides those that were delivered to us in the first games? The ruleset has also moved to 4th edition which means that several hundreds of years has passed since the events of original Baldur's gate games - this change has been quite visible also in recent Forgotten Realms novels. So if they're going to use 4th edition ruleset, the story most likely is completely new one with new people (well, you might meet some familiar elfs that survived the spellplague).

4th edition rules?
In other words, no more multiclassing? No more customization? :/
I'd rather have the original 2nd/3rd edition hybrid of BG2 than 4e. Even WotC is now admitting they screwed it up by asking people what the hell they should do with 5e. |

Regarding your fears about EA:
Bioware is no longer owning the Baldur's Gate series, since Atari bought it from them. Atleast the game will be free of EA, Origin and hopefully DLC if they would decide to make it.
And since Atari is not really known for going for looks first, I have my hopes up about them wanting to make it a real RPG where the story actually is important. |

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition coming this Summer
Quote:Atari, Wizards of the Coast, and Overhaul Games are pleased to announce work has begun on the Enhanced Edition of BaldurGÇÖs Gate and BaldurGÇÖs Gate II. So it seems we get new versions of the original games... there goes my summer vacation I wish they'd enhance also Planescape Torment as that one was even better than Baldur's gate games.
Looks like Baldursgate.com is under heavy stress and only thing new there is the line: GÇ£Stay tuned for more information.GÇ¥ |

Yeah, Overhaul Games are doing it.
This is a good thing. They got mad props for their update of MDK 2 recently from people like Rock Paper Shotgun, so BG should be in safe hands.
Personally, after trying to replay BG last year, I'd be happy if they just ported it over to Icewind Dale's version of Infinity, just for all the little things like clicking on signs in towns resulting in floating text rather than having to dig through the chat box, along with higher resolutions and such. |

I just canGÇÖt get excited. I see the name and want but somehow, I am actually filled with a lingering sense of dread. Those old games are dead. Looking at what happened with the Daggerdale game I simply have no confidence in Atari at this time. Neverwinter was even falling apart under their guidance. The cynic in me thinks itGÇÖs just a money grab based on an old IP to take advantage of older gamers with fond memories like you and me thatGÇÖs bound to fail badly. I hate that I feel that way too. |

When developers use other peoples intellectual property it is basically just a money grab, very rarely there are good intentions behind it.

I have a bittersweet feeling about this. I would personally have LOVED a Baldurs Gate 3, but something inside me is thankful that no one decided to kill the good memories I have from the old games trying to score money with apotentially bad sequel.
Let's just hope this enhanced edition fixes some of the problems BG 1 and 2 actually had (journal anyone?). I also hope that they manage to make a smooth transition between the games to create a feeling that it's actually 1 cohesive experience. |

Ahhhhh I just loved BG1/BG2/Icewind Dale 1/2, also throwing Torment in for the sake of Nostalgia as the BEST games ever I had the chance to play.
I still remember the day I bought the Original Baldur's Gate box (in a country where everyone just pirates crap) since I found a small store had them for sale.
Once I installed it and saw the intro and music I was @%@%@%@% in sheer ecstasy !
I still remember though during play customizing some npcs for better specs with Bgeditor since some of the warrior specs were simply inane. Still remember the female halfling warrior from BG2 that I tweaked to be a dual wielding little monster of doom. Rest of npc's were flawless.
Marvelous games, also Icewind Dale if somewhat simpler in story and scope used the same engine. For some reason I can't stand first person only non isometric RPG's these days. I feel like im playing TF2, meh I could even stand Eye of Beholder's way of of walking and exploring dungeons, but really, RPG's these days are so stupidly "theme parked" I honestly miss the sense of exploration, whick Skyrim got totally right as most Bethesda Games.
Now here I am rambling, when all I hope is they actually do the game a nice facelift and leave them somewhat intact for replay so modern gamers can enjoy it for the first time and old bittervets like me can waste the precious few hours a working schedule leaves us replaying the classic again for the sheer joy of nostalgia, the greatest feeling ever able to drain our wallets in remembrance of something that doesn't exist anymore yet we all drive forward trying to recapture "it".
I even bought back in the day Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate XD http://amzn.to/zRlR2t Inner Sayings of BrujoLoco: http://eve-files.com/sig/brujoloco |

Did anyone else solo BG1 and BG2? As in, complete the game using just a single character? I loved doing that! I seem to remember a summoning spell and being able to hide was pretty important, so you could hide in a crypt and summon minions to drain magic-user enemies of their spells. |

I did that with my wizard. At the end of BG1 i had 1 slot for level 7 magic(the strongest) and I felt pretty bad-ass. In the end of BG2, i had 5-6 slots for l7. My joy was neverending!
I remember 2 moments in these games even now, after more then 10 years of playing them.
First was stumbling on a stone statue in middle of nowhere. I tried stone-to-flesh magic on it, and it came alive, giving you quest or something. Nothing was holding my hand to it, and there wasn't option to do it when you clicked on that statue. It was required of you, you know, to think
Second such moment was in BG2 when you fought some beast and every time you hit it, it says 'Your anger makes me stronger', or something like that. After 5 deaths to it in a row, I tried healing spell on him. Bastard was down after 1 spell
And of course, someone mentioned a most common creature: a wolf, which was deadly if you were level 1 or 2. Died a couple of times after 1st encounter with the dreaded wolf. Had to think of an approach how to take him down solo as a wizard,
Good and happy times, looking forward to new versions!
