yup it's just like any animation made in any county. most are bad, it takes a special kind of animation to make people really like it that are older than 12.
that said if art and story are your thing, you've seen deathnote right?

it doesn't keep going as well as other animes but the 1st 20 eps will keep you interested as long as you don't mind the lack of fighting, it's a much more mystery devtective based series.

Quote: There's been an alarming amount of bad anime lately...
Its always been 1-3% of some-what decend stuff and the rest is just unwatchable. If someone says, "Anime is shit!" he is right, because most of it is that, you can't really argue against facts. Still I don't agree with such a degree prejudgism (is that even a word?). I either don't understand people who watch anime just because its anime, this equally freaks me out. I refuse to give up on my views of what makes a good story, it doesn't depend on the fact wether the story is presented in drawn form or as a regural movie/series. This also means that I don't judge series before I'v seen them, thus I watch anime every now and then, though taking account the quality of the animeshows; mostly when people recommend me some.
I liked SZS because it was widely different from anything I'v seen lately on that genre. Though saying something is "dumb" and leaving it to that really gets to me, even if you have the right for that opinion.
Don't be flaming, I presented my _opinions_ in a reasonably polite fashion. _______

Just remember anime wasn't made for you. It was made for the Japanese audience. As such, there's gonna be plenty of things you either don't like, or don't understand.
There's a lot of humor in anime as well that most people don't understand. But that depends on what your watching I guess.

They're pulling your chain subtly at the start keeping it mildly realistic, then slowly get rid of most/all realism and go the surreal sarcastic route.
Oh well, if it didn't grow on you after 3-5 episodes, I suppose it never will Not everybody likes that type of humour...

I don't think I'm giving too much away here, but Gurren Laggan can sprout drills which are bigger than the machine itself. So ya - realism doesn't play an enormous part in this show.

at least the live action movies which came out before the anime did never get to the 2nd arc and ignore it by having a new ending :)

Well, 6 months ago I had pretty much only seen Cowboy Bebop. Thanks to you lot I now have a half terabyte of the stuff.
What I can recall:
Black Lagoon - Pirates. Guns. Gangsters. What else do you need? Probably just about my favorite, but a bit of view discretion advised.
Cowboy Bebop - Pretty much the first one I saw, great scifi series.
Ghost in the Shell - Very cyberpunk, incredible (all of them, movies and series though particularly the series)
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - As discussed, not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it immensely.
Great Teacher Onizuka - Extremely funny
Gurren Lagann - Just ridiculous, almost stopped watching after an episode or so, but it grows on you. If it wasn't intended as a parody of the genre, it should have been. Really ended up enjoying it. Combat gets a little repetetive, but well - how often isn't it?
Trigun - Scifi-western, enjoyable characters. Little goofy here and there.
Hellsing - Enjoyable series, sort of gory brain popcorn.
Elfen Lied - Series about ****ed up people, many of them doing ****ed up things. Plus telekinesis and horns. Still, one I enjoyed, but viewer discretion advised. Graphic violence, nudity.
Full Metal Panic - Sort of a fun watch, cause giant robots are great.
Gunslinger Girl - Little girl cyborg assassins. With a lot of characterization.
Noir - Again, assassins. Who doesn't love'em?
Outlaw Star - Woooo Spaceships and pirates.
Last Exile - Epic airship stuff.
Ergo Proxy - Great stuff, very heavy on the characters.
Code Geass - Little over the top, but some unexpected twists and turns
Deathnote - Enjoyed parts of it, but some - particularly the ending - was a bit meh.
I'm sure I'll think of more later. I have an (unhealthy) tendency to watch an entire show in 1 or 2 nights. So there are some I may have watched and totally forgotten about. On the up side, they must not have been that good. --------------

Watching black lagoon atm. Only gotten through few eps, but so far its been semi-entertaining. Not expecting much from the series anyway.
Tried to watch Code Geass again; I couldn't, nor could I handle full metal alchemist. Both series totally lose their perspective; CG has forced plot twists in every episode and RIDICULOUS sex-overload on every female character. FMA's alchemy lost all its meaning when they made a 20m wall around a frigging mountain, yet struggle to defeat some other alchemists. MEH.
Avoid these if you wan't to stay within the limits of logic. (Perhaps I'm just too picky for anime.) _______

Logic rarely comes into it. In the words of one Mr. Strongbad: Japanese cartoons are weird.
Has anyone watched the first episode of Michiko To Hatchin? Looks like it could turn out to be pretty interesting.

Well, GitS and perhaps Bebop aside, Black Lagoon reminds me of Eve more than any other anime I have watched. I mean, just in terms of attitude.
I think, on the topic of something being logical, that that is often one of Anime's strengths. Relatively lower budgets and the ability to do pretty much anything in terms of special effects opens the door one pretty much any story that someone wants to tell. These do occasionally get a little over the top naturally. If you want a more realistic style, btw, have you tried Planetes? It is, as I think someone has mentioned, probably the only hard Scifi anime like, ever. --------------

Watched this, it was close to awesome all the way to episode 13-15, from where on it turned to be so cheesy dating/relationship anime that I almost puked. I really don't care anymore how it ends tbh, even though it had some nice political critique and asked some interesting questions about human nature, putting that bloody romance factor in, most likely as a crowd pleaser (feared it would come to that from the first episode too), just absolutely devastated the experience for me. If you can stand it, or god forbid enjoy it, then sure; this is a good anime to check out.

I'll throw some suggestions into the pool. A few more or less less well known series I tend to recommend to people are:
Monster - Whenever anyone tells me how deep or intelligent Death Note is, I point them to this. It's a suspense/detective story which follows a surgeon who discovers that a boy he once risked his career to save has grown up to become a deadly criminal mastermind. It's long and bloated, but everything about it contributes to the overall feel and theme, and its cast of characters puts pretty much every other anime out there to shame. Watch this series like you would read a novel: over time and with your brain switched on. There is no dub.
Requiem from the Darkness (aka Hundred Stories) - I'm not sure there is a genre for this. A medieval writer gets caught up in the affairs of a trio of quasi-supernatural detectives/harbingers/justice-bringers as they investigate mysterious occurrences and punish the wicked. Dark, stylish, and at times grotesque, with a strong influence of Japanese folklore. There is a dub, but the Japanese vocals are really good, even if you can't understand them.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - Mentioned earlier; definitely not for everyone, but if you like dark humor and random humor then you just might absolutely love it. Funny as hell and comes with a fair dash of social commentary to boot.
Welcome to the N.H.K. - Another dark comedy, this time about a paranoid, antisocial college dropout, his loser-otaku neighbor, and a codependent high school girl who has decided to "fix" him. May make you laugh in a these-people-are-so-screwed-up-but-somehow-this-is-just-a-little-too-close-to-home kind of way.
Gankutsuou - A sci-fi retelling of Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo. Gaudy, unique, and horrendously unfaithful to the book (obviously?). It's good, but not great.
One Piece - Okay, this one is by no means obscure. If you love shounen you probably already know what you think of it, and if you hate shounen this one isn't going to change your mind. But if you are somewhere in between and feel like trying out something from the genre I would recommend this one. One Piece has imo the best mix of action, characters, style, and epic-ness of the shounens, and it is one of the very few that knows better than to take itself too seriously. *DO NOT WATCH THE DUBS!*
Oh, and obligatory: Great Teacher Onizuka - If you are in any way open to watching a high school comedy, watch it. That is all.

It's been a while, but wasn't that mountain the one where they were creating the liquid which was supposed to hugely increase alchemists powers?
And anyway, what good would a 20m wall do against an alchemist?
As for Geass, it's supposed to have forced plot twists. If you can predict what is going to happen next, something has gone wrong. -

Edited by: ReaperOfSly on 29/10/2008 09:59:48 I'm rewatching Ghost in the Shell SAC. It's one of the very few animT series I actually own on DVD (which is probably why I don't watch it much - disks are awkward). Now I remember why I loved this series. Yay Laughing Man!
Has anyone been watching Tytania? Only 2 episodes out so far, but it looks like it could turn out to be interesting. The characters actually seem to be intelligent (rare in animT), and have never made me go "well why didn't he just...". First episode was a roughly even split between spaceship battling and tea sipping, second was a bit more talky talky. Could be setting up for something grand.
