I saw this somewhere once but I cant google it. There was someplace that show'd eve's explosive release, then decline, then its slow and steady ascension over the years.

It propably doesn't exist, since the few charts I follow, don't show anything like that. There have been times of growth and stagnation, but no meaningful drops in subscriptions.

I think you just answered your own question... Because its free...
And they make it hard to cancel the account! Thus inflating there numbers.

Also gotta remember those figures are now six months old, wow's gained at least another 1.5 million subscribers, certain games have gone to the wall, economic crunch will mean games that favour less spending of the rl stuff will start to grow faster than their cash counterparts.
People will find ways to shed alt accounts which eve has always been a bit prolific for though i suspect with ghost training dropped from the game there will be a drop of in the total number of active subscriptions area, even though it seems to be a credit crunch motivated decision to drop ghost training I think its gonna turn around and bite ccp in the backside because it will probably end up with fewer total accounts been active per period, after all someone playing 2 accounts his normal and one where he only pays for one of them when a skill completes is still gonna be better than just 1 account for ccp, given that the cost to maintain accounts is negligible. So the post october growth results will be intresting. ------------------------------------------ Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Mail [email protected] if you have questions. -Hango

I HATE hearing people argue that folks will deactivate alt accounts when things go bad in game, when things get nerfed, things get financially tough, and so on.
Theres a REASON most of us get alt accounts.
I couldn't close one of my accounts now if I wanted to.
WHY? Because each one focus's on one thing. Capitals, production, pvp and so on.
Each one is focused to do one thing well. If I close one, then I suddenly find that 1/4 of eve is cut off to me. Close this char? Boom, no more isk. Close my first one? Boom. No more capitals. Close my 2nd one, BOOM, no more Minnie pvp/mineing. Close another, BOOM no more amarr PVP.
People don't create alts so they can have 2 or more characters who can all do the same thing, they create alts to fill voids they cannot fill with their current character(s).
What use is a character to a player, to CCP or to the community who's ghost training? NONE. We ALL want active subscribers who use their characters. Not just sit offline training up skills simply so they can be sold RMT wise.

I hate hearing ppl argue that their situation defines the same situation for everyone similar.
Not everyone that has an alt account does it to pseduo solo play quite a few ppl will just have character's on the same account that can do the majority of things quiet well.
You may not ever have to close ur alt accounts thats your prerogative but for all you know there could be hundreds of ppl that do and don't really have an issue with loosing the ability to fly such and such as ship or build such and such an item. But the fact remains belts are getting tightend and eve is a luxury even more so for alt accounts, this is a rather new situation for mmo subscribers as its the first economic downturn that the mmo industry has been subject to.
Theres no statement anywhere in eve that says you must be able to do everything in game, infact theres a slight bias against it, more encouragement to team up you obviously appear to be one of the players that attempts to play the game single handedly I pity you for that.
You last lil statement

Just amused me, incase you missed it ghost training has been around since the start of eve, if i remember right there was an extremely short period where ccp removed it somewhat accidentally then reinstated it. so CCP hasn't exactly been oblivious to it, yet soons as theres a bit of a downturn in the world economy ghost training suddenly gets dropped forcing ppl to actively maintain accounts if they want to skill them up. Prior to that ppl skilling up alts (whether or not they were going on the market) would quite often set a long skill training at the end of a period then let the account expire till the skill would be complete, sometimes this was expressly to save money, sometimes it was because they were off on holiday. Also incase you missed it theres a 199 page thread about the ghost training removal with most ppl arguing against it.
Tbh now ghost training is gone, theres no reason why we can't have offline skill selection or skill queuing as the primary argument against them was ghost training. |

I went from 10 accounts to 4 as a result of this, all my char slots are full and ccp gained 20euro for every char I transfered but lost the account thereafter. I am thankful that the change was made, it made the decision easier to merge the accounts together, but if ghost training still existed I would not have done it. I dont think I am the only one. |

My 'ghost trained' accounts were active over 9 months in 12. Consuming $121 by ETC (through isk) If I had paid by cc, CCP would have got $131 from me. 9 months > 0 months.
I didn't sell the chars I trained, I merged them, I enjoyed making chars with different talents. Now I dont do it. (I am rich ingame so sue me :) ) |

The only thing the economy has done for me and my alt accounts is convinced me to subscribe for a year at a time and pay in a lump sum, rather then subbing for 3 month intervals in case I get bored or hospitalized. |
