I'm growing a little tired of seeing rocket explosions larger than a cruiser sized hull. Same goes for other effects. Just because I know I should know where the damage is coming from doesn't mean I should be witnessing a brilliant light from something as small as a 250mm shell. Really. That shell is NOT larger than a frigate, can we please not see it like it is? ____________________ CCP: Catering to the cowards of a cold, harsh universe since November, 2006. |

a 250mm shell is NOT small a shell that size in real life would make most buildings explode purely from over pressure most tank/artillery shells are less than 150mm so believe me the effects arent that far off

All I know, is that in my game about futuristic space empires in the year 23,000AD, where I play a demigod as an immortal pilot in a pod controlling my ship with my mind, I demand that all explosions are as realistic as possible.

If you want to be realistic, the sheer velocity of the railgun/projectile turret ammunition would be enough to destroy pretty much anything short of a capital ship in one shot.

If you would want realism there wouldn't be Eve - not a single bit of it.
But this is about aesthetics. And some of those new effects are just ugly, compared to what we have on TQ right now. However, there is still enough time for the devs to fix it - given that they get good and constructive feedback.

Did you know explosive shells used in aviation to explode planes were actually 2 centimeter large? So imagine the effect of a 100X bigger shell.
But, i admit i agree with the OP that missiles xplosions are to big and we don't understand what happens if we don't zoom out.

Yes because fixing a graphics glitch over moar important things like the client not randomly crashing and getting the rest of the features in and usable on the test server is totally worth the dev time. Turn off scene 2 if it bothers you and when its fixed you can turn it back on.

About 10x bigger, not 100x :P. You're comparing centimeters to milimeters. But I think you're right other than that, that the effect of the shell is probably more than you'd expect. On the other side, ships in eve are really big. A frigate in Eve would be about comparable to the biggest airliners on earth I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have made a little comparison image, however i could not find a source that confirmed it, i do believe the explosion on the left is about the height of the Eiffel tower. The image on the right is to scale with the raven and whatever Caldari frigate that is in comparison to the tower.
Either way, it puts things into perspective doesn't it?
EDIT: The gun used is a 280mm atomic cannon, the M65 was made and fielded in the early 50's, imagine how far mankind can get compared to having warp drives and stargates.
EDIT 2: ZOMG! I am comparing a game to reality!!! ... Well who started it? And i know i am being silly, just making a point.

Actually, he's not right and you were closer with your original estimate. Remember that we're talking diameter. If we're only thinking 2-D then, yes, we're talking 10x larger. However, shells are not 2D. They are 3D. The larger a shell is diameter the longer the shell is the larger the internal volume.
A simplistic example of this would be measuring a square and a cube. A 2x2 square is 4 times larger than a 1x1 square. 4SqFt vs 1SqFt. A 1x1x1 cube is 1 cubic foot whereas a 2x2x2 cube is 8 cubic feet; 8 times larger.
So comparing a 2cm shell to an 210mm shell is not comparing 20mm to 210mm on a line. The area of a 20mm circle is ~314mm. The area of a 210mm circle is 34168.5mm. Roughly 109 times larger. That's the 2D difference. The 3D difference is a factor larger still! However since internal volume of a shell is based on the length which is independent of the diameter I can't give a reasonable example. Needless to say refer to the difference of a square vs. a cube above and you can see that the difference between the two shells is quite immense and certainly much more than your initial 100x, much less the "corrected" 10 times.
