Edited by: crockett EXE on 16/02/2009 08:33:16 Edited by: crockett EXE on 16/02/2009 08:32:33 A friend and myself started EVE 2 weeks ago with the intention of doing mostly PVP. Well as brand new players, that is easier said than done. After ending up on the wrong end of the beating stick a few too many times in low sec, we finally pulled off our first successful can flip and kill in hi sec. (easier said than done when u have very limited amounts of targets as new players with low skill points)
I will say this, it wasn't so much the kill that was fun, but rather the baiting of the target. I was flying a Rifter with standard PVP set up, while my friend was in the same, but instead of having a webber he had a 20k warp disruptor.
I flipped his can giving him the aggressor on me and at that point he targeted my ship. I warped off to the closest belt like I was scared leaving the bait behind. My friend was within 20k of the can and orbiting some other player's ship and the target totally ignored him as we hoped.
The target waits for several mins assuming I'd come back, then he proceeds to steal his ore back. My friend gets the aggressor and warp jams him, as I jump back on top of him and kill him.
It was a easy kill (Burst) that either one of us could have taken on our own, but it was the fun in setting up the kill that was the best part. It was the perfect tag team hook line and sinker with a fish at the end of the line.
I will say this, I can understand how it can be fun to cause misery on other players as a pirate, however I kinda felt bad for the guy.

You'll probably need the two of you to take care of the drones, but again it's the fun you have not the flames you get on here.

Now go back in to lowsec and get real kills! If you guys want real PVP that's where it is, you wont get much of an adrenalin rush shooting at miners.

Yea, I've been reading though the forums over the last 2 weeks while on my trial account but today is the first day I can post. I expect the trolls.
As for the Hulks, we were a bit uncertain about them but it's rare to ever see any with unsecured cans. In fact it seems pretty hard in general to find many unsecured cans where we are working.

Well, when you are barely pushing over 1 million skill points as a new player it's pretty tough to find even a reasonably even fight in low sec. If we had a chance against guys that have been flying since 2003 then we would go for it. However it's game dynamics that force us to play in hi sec for now.
As for now, the only thing I can really do in low sec is play cat and mouse with other ships on my scanner as I learn to use it faster. Not much chance of taking on T2 ships in my little Rifter even with two of us. Trust me we have tried many times.

Dont let nay sayers ruin your time, can flipping is a profession that requires skill patience and the ability to fly a really nice rifter.
Although 2 vs 1 is a little unfair, we have to start somewhere.
There can be considerable sums of money in can flipping and hulks as long as they aint fitting tech II dronage are remarkably easy to take down. And its quite fun to lock web and pop their drones while oyu orbit the hulk keeping him in one place.
If you need any help or advice feel free to contact me because I have had lots of can flipping experience.
Regards,
BR

Well, killing a Burst is kind of as low as it can get in regards to kills.
But we all have to start somewhere right? Low-sec, while it's supposed to be the staging area for new PvP'ers, it fails at that, and has done for years. Flying into low-sec with a low-skill rifter is going to burn you. Then again, getting burned is also part of learning the ropes.
If you want to pick fights in high-sec, there's many ways to do that solo. It's much tougher to get both yourself and your friend flagged so you can take someone together.
Flipping the can is the most basic one, where you want your target to get ****ed and engage. Pretty straightforward, but most times they don't take the bait.
Here's the main rule on how to get them to engage.
You need to let them think they stand a chance.
Orbitting a Retriever at 3km/s with MWD running isn't going to make him bite. Neither will flipping his can while you're in a pimped up HAC.
The ones I had most success with (aside from regular flip the can and wait for reaction):
Trojan horse style: Fly the cheapest T1 frig you can find, fit civilian crap guns, flip a can. When he engages, let him pop you. Fly back to station while he smacktalks on local, switch to your PvP ship, fly back and destroy him.
Bait-car style: Fit a cruiser with a mining laser and some mining drones. Have your friend drop a j-can next to you. Start mining into the can. When another player flips your can, your friend destroys him. This can also be done solo using your own can if you have a decent ship.
I've often used an Arbitrator with 2 mining lasers, 3 mining drones (only use 3 to make myself seem to have poor drone skills), passive targetter, dual medium neuts, web, scram and 5 x light T2 drones, 5 x medium T2 drones.
Also, don't be afraid to engage bigger ships either. When mining in BC's or BS's, people often like to intimidate you by sending out their mighty drones. This is a ******ed thing to do for them. Most BC/BS's (barring gallente ones ofc) only have 50m3 dronebays. If they are flashing a set of 5 Medium drones, well... that means they ain't got more drones.
I've ransomed an Apoc using my rifter because he flashed his drones which allowed me to target them all before I even took can. After I flipped, he engaged, and I started to web and pop drones while keeping him scrambled. Once he was out of drones, well... he was trapped and perma-scrambled :)
Anyways, flipping cans successfully takes patience. Moreso, you only get the good fights if you have the balls to wait around for them to go switch ship and come back with their "combat ship". Alot of times though they are too chicken to engage.
I had a Harpy chicken out when facing my rifter and being unable to outfly me (they kept testing if they could outfly me before engaging).
I also had a Rokh chicken out and not engage my Wolf after I flipped and destroyed a can with 26.000m3 ore. I was SO anxious to have a fight with that Rokh :( Probably couldn't have taken it, but hey, I'll put up a fight :D

This is true, but is it's any less low getting run down by 5 guys in a low sec at DAL, using their frigate pilot as bait? Only to have his 4 friends warp in flying ships 10 times the size of a Rifter with 20 drones.. (hehe yes that happened)

Like I said in the very next sentence "Everyone has to start somewhere, right?"
And yeah, the traps in low-sec and being blob'ed is exactly what makes Low-sec fail as the staging area for new PvP'ers. -------------------------------------------------- "Every complex problem has a solution which is easy, neat and wrong!" |

Keep at it mate, there's a whole lot of fun and profit to be had in this highsec business. It's less ADHD-pewpew-BOOM and more like fishing, waiting to see what happens and reacting to it.

Welcome to the dark side of the moon Everyone has to start somewhere and get some experience so props for that.. even the people that said they didn't, well they lied - they did.
Next thing: If they drop drones, shoot them first while keeping the target tackled. Otherwise you're going to be drone feed.
If they don't play and shoot/steal back, ransom the ore for a fee. Once you've got it, leave system be on your way and let them take it back. If they don't agree to a ransom, loot it and keep it or just pop the can if it's worth jack.
Ransoming the ship is good for iskies, just watch out for delays if they're calling in friends. If they do call in help, pop it because it's going to have cost them a lot more than it potentially, could you (assuming your rifter gets popped by his mates - in which case, inflict maximum financial pain).
Remember, keep your eye on the bottom line

Seems like you're not a pirate, you're just a wannabe pirate. You can't handle it. Save yourself before you can't sleep at night and the stolen ore comes to hunt you... |

Besides.. if you mine into a jetcan.. you deserve to be can flipped.
