This might be more appropriate in the forum that hosts Exploration threads, because that's what I'm trying to work on and I keep encountering planetary setups that make it impossible to productively place Quest probes due to crowded planetary positions.
Which made me think: do planets in EVE actually orbit their sol and therefore change positions on the system map occasionally?

I don't know, but I doubt it. It would not serve any purpose in game and would cause massive amount of additional calculations with celestial objects and structures. So huge disadvantages and no real benefit=not likely/No.

Yeah, I hadn't considered all the dependencies on a static map, you're probably right. Not much bang for that buck.

Short answer: No.
Moons don't orbit their planets either, Stations don't orbit, Gates are static too. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

They used to I think during beta, but what I heard a dev say once was, that it was just extra stuff that needed to be calculated by the server all the time and make bookmarking not so useful and really didn't add anything to the gameplay, so they made them static.

The best option to deal with your problem is to create mid-warp bookmarks to cover as much area as you can. If you do it right, you'll be able to get -almost- maximum coverage, even among crowded planets.

Keep in mind the whole quest exploration probe placement discussion goes out the window in 3 weeks. They won't exist anymore.

Yeah, I'm aware of the new probing system in Apocrypha and waiting (with some apprehension) to learn how it operates. Meanwhile, I'm using up all my existing probes using the existing system.
I've tried bookmarking mid-warp and it works, to a degree. I'm practicing incrementally placing a lot of bookmarks during a warp and then using the closest one because the process is very lacking in precision and the on-screen animation in the System map is way off. If I hit Ok for the bookmark as I'm at the location I want to be at on the System map, I wind up near an end point instead.
