Ok, I recently bought an SSD and I have both my TQ and Sisi clients on it.
I've done some searching and found about ten different methods of setting a new cache location instead of the default. I would like to put my cache on the SSD to improve the performance.
What is the best method of accomplishing this goal?
Thanks

It is questionable if that would actually have any affect on performance in the first place.
But if you insist on doing it, try adding "/end /LUA:OFF" to the shortcut for launching Eve.

This is no longer supported. Instead set your environment variable to the new location using a bat file then launch eve
This has surpassed the Yarrdware specification and has been dubbed Uberware. |

That is news to me, do you have a link for that info please.

This is still supported and works fine.
Another method would be to create another partition on yout SSD disk and mount it under your (empty!) cache folder in your file structure.

Interesting.. thanks for the input guys. I'm in the process of reorganizing my machine and trying to optimize performance. Right now it has a slow IDE drive as the C drive and the other 2 drives are much better performance SATA drives.
I'm shifting the data around to reformat/reinstall XP on one of the SATA drives and I wanted to get ideas on how to optimize the cache for the game as part of the optimization process.

It is not "supported" (link 1), but is does still work (link 2).
You can use it if you want, but if there are any problem, the first thing that CCP's tech support is going to tell you is to stop using it.

Well in theory. A programs cache should not be on the same drive of the program or IOS. SO you could do the following.
1. IOS and EVE on one drive / Cache on second drive changing windows default user location.
2. IOS and Cache same drive / EVE on second drive
3. IOS on one drive / EVE & Cache on second drive.
Not sure which version works the best or for that matter which one CCP recommends if there is any benifit @ all.
Maybe CCP knows , HINT HINT

you would probably get better performance running your os of the ssd. Then the cache would also be on the ssd with a default install.

Hmm.. that is a very interesting suggestion and I hadn't even considered that. So far I haven't had any reliability issues with the SSD so I think I'll give that a try. It's only a 32GB SSD but that should be more than sufficient as long as I install all of the non-OS software (i.e. Eve) to one of the SATA drives.

OK.. Here is some info what I have found out so far from EVE, regarding cache and log locations.
First of all, here is how I start the game: starteve.cmd
set USERPROFILE=d:\Games\EVE\ Start "eve" d:\Games\EVE\bin\ExeFile.exe /nosplash /noconsole /end /LUA:OFF exit -------------- The game is installed in: D:\Games\EVE directory.
-------------- The first line: set USERPROFILE=d:\Games\EVE\
Modifies the parameter where you want to store the screenshots, and chat/game logs. But! You need to have a "My Documents" - or equivalent directory at the end of the path what you specify.
So in Windows XP ENG you need to have: d:\Games\EVE\My Documents
Windows Vista ENG: d:\Games\EVE\Documents
Without the directory the game just hang! -------------- The second line starts the game, just it's not starting it via the original eve.exe it's bypassing it and it launches directly the game main application. No splash screen etc.
The /end /LUA:OFF parameter keeps the cache directory in d:\Games\EVE\ directory.
-------------- About the cache: There is a directory called: MachoNet under Cache. Under there is the IP of the server: 87.237.38.200 the there are sub directories called: 201, 202, 203, 204
As I have noticed, the directory name is increased by one in every bigger patch. And you only need the directory with the highest number. Currently that is the 204. (QR build: 75883) All the other directory you can delete. During the game start the application is reading/checking this files. So if you have many files there, then the startup takes longer. (You can notice high disk io during the "authentication" phase - that is because of this MachoNet file read/check )
ps: All this information is AS-IS. They are just based on my personal experience with the game.

Or use ntfs junction points to hardlink the directory.

Yep. Just that is something what the average user can not do. :(

junction points are evil! I managed to clear my home dir when deleting an old Vista install - that had junctions to my current install. annoying!
But they do work like intended lol
