Or just add a single high slot module that gives capital ships a point defense system?
But then what role would there be for all those frigates and cruisers in your fleet?

Just like they would in any normal fleet I suppose....Tackle, Support, AntiSupport. They'll just have to be more careful arround caps.

well, i'd say carriers/moms are pretty good already, some changes could be discussed but the main problem is the titan and the dreadnought. I wouldn't suggest giving titans more turrets-etc skills, but give them way more support capabilities.
A Titan is a huge movable combat base. So it should be more efficient and more capable in that respect.

Titans that would have triage carrier capabilities all the time? Titans offering automated maintenance when you're close enough (think about a totally automated swarm of drones).
Would be good if they had something else than being the doomsday bringers, fleet bonus and jumpclones facility. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Actually seems like a pretty decent idea. I forsee severe balancing issues, but tbh I think it would make killing and using caps more interesting.

The idea is good, think about it would you build a ship capable of taking out stations and other ships of its class, but have no defense against smaller ships/ fighters? Not to mention this isnt the case in RL (and please no saying 'eve isnt realistic' because that is a poor excuse) and id suspect the ratio of sci fi movies/games/books that have huge ships with no defense against smaller ships and those that do is in favour of those that do.

I am sure most people in here have seen the third classic Star Wars movie "Return of the jedi".
According to what I read somewhere, the Imperial Navy were supposed to own and field thousands (or tens of thousands, I don't remember) of "Star Destroyers", but they were scattered around the galaxy. So when the rebel fleet show up at the end, they apparantly had to fight merely a fraction of the total amount of star destoryers from the Imperial Navy fleet.
Perhaps some rewarding, yet restrictive gamedesign could encourage capital ship fleets to be spread out more and not blob up?

To elaborate my point, the only capital ship which is currently unable to properly defend itself against smaller ships is the Dreadnought. The others ( Carriers, Moms and Titans ) are all pretty good at killing smaller stuff, either with lots of drones or in the case of the titan, with a dd.
The Dread on the other hand is an extremly specialised ship, basicaly a bunch of oversized guns with a hull around. It trades the ability to kill small ships for the highest firepower of all ships in eve which makes it extremly usefull at taking on POSes and all other capital ships.
Sounds pretty balanced doesnt it. So, giving the other ships some kind of point defence system is simply not necessary ( because they can actualy defend themselfs pretty well ) while granting such a system to the dreadnought would make it grossly overpowered.

Let me correct :
Originally by: echohead A long long time ago, the single surviving fighter of a group of 100 was able to take down a deathstar of some sort.
The important point here is the fighter wasn't alone.
Also, it's quite important to note that the large ships in that said galaxy were equipped to take out ships one size under their size. The capital ships shot down some kind of battleships which shot down some kind of cruisers which shot down some kind of frigates which shot down some kind of fighters... Maybe the point is clearer when playing the RPG... But the larger things really needed the support ships to be safe while still having some luck on shooting down stuff.
Just remember there are no lucky shots here.

but the counter point to that is cap ships in eve don't have a 2 metre wide exhaust vent that leads straight to the power core resulting in a decimating chain reaction that will destroy the ship with 2 proton torpedos

Yeah, it's balanced. Just not interesting and boring. Dreads are just huge sentry gun and Titans an even more huge thing with only basic capability to fart a deadly fart, to charm its friends by erm....bonuses and jcs. All those are nice, just not enough for the mambojumboendgamelightyearz0ftraining babe. Make it more appealing to the average eve player i say. Even owning a Pos is more interesting than owning a titan.....

Not possible unless Cap Ships require more than one player in them.
They would be way overpowered unless you give them a requirement for multiple players to be aboard one. That way when one goes down.. 8 little pods pop out for your gang to kill!
Hooray!
But no. No Solopwnmobiles that can destroy entire fleets on a whim.

I'm going to have to assume you posted in the wrong thread...
Comparing this thread to a CAOD thread is like trying to compare a Wolf to a Maltese...

It would only be a solopwnmobile to anything that manages to sit still for the 15-30 seconds it takes to lock anything...AND if it could actually hit with the 50% tracking penalty.
