"....we lost contact with our Kuru Khai and director Poreuomai around 17:35 local time."
zoolkhan walked up and down in front of the audience in combat suits
"He was due to report back every 30 minutes during what he told us to be a “private” mission
He is now overdue since more than 8 hours.
War or not, Frontline duties or not – i need two volunteers for a search and rescue operation."
Zoolkhan pondered...
"We have been receiving insider information a fewd days back, indicating that Old foes, amarrian loyalists , may attempt an kidnapping operation on a U’K official.
I fear i shoudl have taken this more serious, i have not even informed the council so far..."
zool leaned with both fists on the table and looked up into the round
"Ok, then. Two volunteers – one is to go to amarr and locate him. Another one is to transport a black ops team to the area and provide cover.
Now, who will step forward?"

Zoolkhan, I suggest that you keep such sensitive planning information to your own secure networks. Now that the entire cluster knows Poreuomai is missing, his enemies (if he has any) can easily follow your actions and make an effort to eliminate him before you have a chance to do anything about it.
Either you have a security leak, or you need to fire your administration and security staff for their quite shocking incompetence at letting this go public in such a manner.

If CVA ever got our hands on him I would not be making this statement. We know where your missing official is. His whereabouts remain classified so don't even try any kind of espionage attempt. I am happy to report he is in fine condition and in an extremely blissful state of mind.
You may call off your search.

Grr, are you implying that one of your allies holds our director?
I find this hard to believe, any one of your "holders" would hand such a high value target over to the CVA upon capture and you would immediately make a statement on Galnet in an attempt to score a propaganda victory, we all know how much independence you allow your allies.
I think its far more likely that our warrior has simply "gone dark" to avoid the capture of one of our operatives. |

Memories of the past five months flooded back to Sapphrine as he remember his own harrowing journey lost in the wilderness after a freak engine meltdown had left him in a barely functioning pod behind enemy lines. He reached for the comms panel and flicked it to ship wide.
"Gentleman, this is not a combat mission. We are looking for one of our own. He is a Kuru Khai so he knows how to handle himself. Given the current absence one of two things will have happened. He has either gone to ground to cover his tracks or he has been betrayed on his meeting."
Pausing to breathe, images of torture and fire filled Sapphrine's mind, he channelled these images and focused his resolve
"Poreuomai is Ushra'Khan! We Come for our people! You are the best of my reconnaisance crews, we will operate within the shadows of Providence and we will leave no stone unturned. Man your stations and prepare to cloak. Bashir Out."
Turning off the comms he knew this wouldn't be a short trip. Whilst he hoped Por was just being prudent his gut feeling was to expect a long search.

"So, the 'Khanners have lost a director, eh? Can't say I'm surprised... Providence is hostile to them after all."
He continues reading, then turns to someone outside of the camera range.
"Mirla? Dial up my old contacts in Carthum Conglomerate, tell them I need sensor equipment readings. Lots of 'em. And ask them if they are willing to let me make use of their locator networks yet. There's a manhunt on."
Esna stands up and walks through his quarters to a window overlooking the docking facilities. Crowded between industrials, battleships, and HACs a small, almost fragile Anathema-class covert operations vessel can be seen.
"Ah, well. I hadn't intended to take this baby down to Providence 'till the end of the month... but the situation calls for it, I believe..." ----------------------------------------------

They also did nothing to prevent this, not surprising since they are an enemy of Ushra'Khan. Other local inhabitants where also passive and/ or may have been active providing the meeting point corordinates to the local Crime lord. He seems to have ties to the Shansa's Pirate faction.

Buzzard Class Covert Ops - HMS Intrepid
Six days.... Six days of this waiting and nothing from Poreuomai. All that they had been able to find in their search had been a whole lot of wreckage. Unsuprising given the contast fight with the Sansha's run by the Providence holders and the constant raiding of his brothers and sister in Ushra'Khan but only one wreck had borne similarity to the ship Por had been seen leaving in and the markings were not a perfect match. Crucially, the black box of that ship had been been so heavily damaged it was impossible to tell anything meaningful.
Sapphrine's internal musing was broken sharply as claxons sounded throughout the ship
'Code red! Set all stations! Code Red!'
'Report Sarikur' ordered Sapphrine over the internal comms. At the same time he began feeling around his ship for what would have forced his 1st officer to have set a code. Even as Sarikur reported he could feel the truth in the space around his ship
'Coming out of warp now sir but the scans indicate a drag bubble and two interceptor class ships.'
Sapphrine silenty thanked the fore-thought of the crew that they were still running combat procedures and warping to ranged spots of gates to observe. A trick he's learned years ago and one that had saved his ass on a numer of occasions.
Coming out of warp a Malediction and a Crusader could be neatly seen holding station, one on the edge of the interdiction bubble towards the previous gate and another sat firmly on the gate.
'Local scans indicate how many other pilots in system?' barked Sapphrine
'5 pilots in local including us' Sarikur reported, 'my guess would be a pilgrim and and probably a Falcon based on pilot profiles of the remaining pilots'
a clever little trap mused Sapphrine. The question was wether the enemy had further forces the other side of the gate.... still, he wasn't in a hurry to move on unless there was no use in staying put.
'Move to an offgrid, drop probes and continue with the mission, Sapphrine Out.'. As he closed the internal comms he opened up a further two comms channels. The first tight band message he sent was for the joint inteligence channel reporting the camp and the information to hand. The second was an encoded update to Zools. The grim message read just three words.
'No further leads.'

In the middle of this an officer who has not onlu friends in the own ranks. The presence of two extra guards following him around, also into the private council meetings, speak for itself.

Ok, well.. waste of ressources.. but good for the bride i guess. I hope the sansha-bounty covers the expenses.

Ok, send him tightband message - two words "no mercy" - i am sure he can manage, otherwise he would respond "join the fun".
...hmm.. ok.. whats this.. Anomalies.. again in south providence. New signatures on long range scan, semi static structures hiding in an EM storm.

Intel indicates that our missing Director is somewhere in the Providence Region. At this time, all gates that exit Providence are to be manned continuously, each ship scanned for lifesigns and report made directly to me on any suspicious movements. Also report all cyno fields immediately.
Find him. Let no ship go unchecked.
Zoolkhan out.
-----------------------------------
Picket duty can be boring. Sardoc was grateful he brought some books to continue his skill set towards that Rapier he had his eye on. As he reads, the board lights up with a contact. Setting the sensors on lifesigns, he quickly scans the ship, an Amarr cruiser - normal crew compliment and makeup. Since the release of the slaves, he had seen most fleet ships now manned only by Amarr, so lifesigns that did not include Minmatar were common. This was no exception - all Amarr. And me without a gun he thought...damn my luck.
He activated comms and made his routine report - System, Gate, Contact type, crew compliment, no anomolies.
And the hours wear on.......

AltBier is standing in front of a large computer cluster
The last 24 hours have seen great progress!
The low frequency trinary encoded data stream has built-in redudancy such that it can be cleaned up using special algorithms - in short we were able to reconstruct more of the message. Please keep in mind that this is a work in progress and message fragments may be misunderstood by us at this point, however we now believe the full message began like this:
ALTBIER * OPERATION SUCCESSFULL * HAVE MADE CONTACT WITH REBEL GROUPS IN CAPTIVITY * DO NOT REPEAT NOT NEED HELP AT THIS TIME * ALLOWED TO SPEND SHORT AMOUNTS OF TIME UNSUPERVISED AND SUCH MISTAKES BY CAPTORS ALLOW ME TO SEND MESSAGE BUT NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE COMPOUND SO CANNOT ESCAPE AT THIS POINT * TELL ZOOLKHAN TO TRUST ME [static] AM FINE FOR NOW [static] [the rest of the message is as above]
AltBier thinks about how this message could have been sent.
Many rebel groups have their own underground network for sending messages covertly in and out of labour camps, it seems Poreuomai has earned their trust enough to get this message to us. We will continue to try to recover more of the message, especially the cryptic ending. We will also try to find a way of sending a message to Poreuomai. I hope he knows what he is doing.

Poreuomai

[27]
Poreuomai is standing with one of his fellow captives, a rebel leader, watching a guard making his way around the compound on the assigned patrol path. What a boring job that must be. 'Almost as boring as gate duty', Poreuomai laughs to himself.
A passkey is visible on the belt of the guard who is now walking along the perimeter fence. The fence is not very high, but anyone approaching it would be shot by the guards. Poreuomai looks around. Two other guards are nearby. He waits for them to leave. The patroling guard is now walking towards them.
'Why did I ever let my skills slip like this, a few years ago I would have walked out of a place like this', Poreuomai thinks while recalling his earlier life as a burglar - no, infiltration expert - when he was a poor young boy in Rens. Getting in and out of places was always the same, simple technique, really, you just have to find the wrong assumptions which the guards had made and exploit them. In this case there were two wrong assumptions, firstly that no prisoner would ever be in the yard after dark, meaning the few doors in the fence were not properly guarded at night, and second that no prisoner could ever leave his cell.
Time to get ready, the shift is nearly over and the guard is tired if not utterly bored. After the guard walks past, Poreuomai silently walks up behind him and snatches the passkey.
It would not be missed until morning. He knows this because he had previously stolen a similar passkey to do a practice run. He had then dropped the passkey on the guards patrol route just before dawn. The embaressed guard was unlikely to report such a near miss and this time the guard would be looking for his passcard for quite some time before confessing such a loss to his captain.
At the end of the shift, the captives are taken back to their cells and locked up securely. Poreuomai smiles and waits for nightfall.

The corridors are always rather quiet after dark because all the captives are in their cells and there is little for the guards to keep an eye on.
An hour after lights-out, Poreuomai makes his move. Having used the passkey to leave his cell, Poreuomai sneaks through the building, making little noise and sticking to the shadows, as his training taught him so long ago. Avoiding the few guards which are on duty tonight he reaches the exit of his cellblock where he uses the passkey again and carefully enters the court yard.
Good, only the one guard is on patrol tonight. The perimeter fence is, of course, brightly illuminated, but the yard itself is relatively dark. Keeping his head low, Poreuomai silently rushes into the darkness of the court yard. He approaches the little door in the fence and waits in the dark until the guard has walked past and has his back turned to him. Poreuomai runs forward, tries the passkey, but an annoying bleep announces that the door does not like this key. Instinctively Poreuomai leaps back into the darkness just as the guard turns around to see what the noise was.
Lying flat on the ground with his face covered, Poreuomai hears the guard's footsteps coming closer. The guard looks around rather puzzled. 'Hmmpf', the guard says as he returns to his patrol, 'must have been rats or something'.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Poreuomai quietly gets up and has a look at the fence. 'Not too high, but I need ... crates!'. First, though, the guard would have to go. Poreuomai waits again for the guard to pass by and then a knock on the back of the head renders the guard unconcous. The limp body is hidden out of view.
Looking around the yard Poreuomai finds a few empty crates which he stacks up against the fence as a make-shift staircase. This has to be done quickly in case anyone else comes along. Before too long Poreuomai is up and over the fence. A quick dash to the treeline and he's gone.

Poreuomai wakes up deep in the forrest. The sun is shining through the trees and some birds are singing in the branches. He had been running for most of the night before collapsing and it is now noon.
'What a crazy mission this has been', Poreuomai thinks to himself. His original transmission on IGS had had the hoped for effect of not only rattling U'K's enemies but also of making various rebel groups aware of a potential ally. Such groups, however, are notoriously paranoid.
The very first such group which he met with had immediatly hand cuffed and blind folded him, dragged him to their hide-out and questioned him at length with constant threats of what they would do to him if he were a spy. Finally he was told that his words of good-will would be tested and a bad outcome would be very bad for Poreuomai's health.
Poreuomai still does not know what that test had been, just that one of the rebels said that a pilot called Ombey had behaved in an acceptable way and Poreuomai could, at last, meet with the group's leadership. The leadership. They tend to end up in labour camps and there is really only one way to meet with them.
'We can get you in easily enough', the rebels had said laughing, 'but you'll have to find your own way out'. They didn't understand the wry smile which appeared on Poreuomai's face.
Poreuomai looks around at the trees. He loves nature in all its wildness, but no doubt there are hungry cats out there, not to mention angry guards.
Time to make contact with Mirkur and get a lift home.

The pod fluid was rated for 30 days so he was good for another 2 weeks. His studies were going well, the comms channel preternaturally quiet for such a search, but U'K has always had good comms discipline, so no worries on that regard.
Sensors chime, noting another ship in range. Not one, several. Sardoc scans and is surprised to see brothers in the cause heading towards his station. Relief perhaps? He waits. The ships pass out of scan range heading towards another gate in the system. But before they leave, he receives a brief, highly encrypted, message:

Well, that's certainly good news. From the configuration of the passing ships, Sardoc realizes that a rescue operation is in effect. He checks his scan parameters, does a few tweaks to make sure that his readings will be accurate. Resets his cloak and waits the next target with renewed hope that the outcome of this operation will be successful.
We also serve who only stand and watch. Sardoc returns to his studies with renewed vigor.

Ottom kicked away from his old desk aboard the S.S. Say. The old logo from his days of pirating radio was embossed on the wall there, the fading sign a testament to rebel roots. Roots he hoped would bring his friends home safely. He had exhausted his contacts in Empire and scoured the surfaces of so many worlds heĈd lost count. Still no sign. He did not worry though. The search would never end, and sooner or later news would come and punishments would be decreed. |

Poreuomai is awakend by the sound of incoming communications. It is good to hear zoolkhan's voice again.
Looking up he sees the modified planetary vehicle decend through the atmosphere. Watching it closely, he notices it is drifting towards the west due to high altitude winds. It will land just a few KMs from the intended site, not bad for an orbit drop.
Poreuomai packs his stuff and heads west.

The secure comm channel chimes, alerting Sardoc to incoming transmissions. He looks at the screen and notes the tight communications protocol. Hm, comms this tight must be close. Looking at his scans, he notes unusual energy fluctuations around a neraby planet. He curses, realizing that the rescue is happening in the system that holds the gate he has been guarding for the last 15 days. Shaking his head ruefully, he awaits orders.
Sometimes it is hard being a soldier, taking orders. But that is what soldiers do, we take orders, we follow our leader's commands and we don't deviate without cause. To have left his post to explore that and other planets in the system would have left him open to court-martial or worse, the loss of the Director.
The gate below him activates. Not unusual, but then it happens again...and again...and again. He realizes a fleet might be coming thru. It could just be a convoy, but with the SAR happening now, there was no telling. Time to report in, better safe than sorry.

While waiting for a reply to his last message, Sardoc decides to look into a decoy of his own. The tool chest in the hold has everything a good electronics expert might need....and a few things that would give a ground transport mechanic a warm and fuzzy feeling as well. He opens the cover on the first probe, pulls a tester from his belt and begins scanning the hardware. He recalls a lesson one of his EWAR teachers brought home to him - not all solutions are obvious, think outside the box and use your ingenuity to find a way. There's ALWAYS a way.
He pries a comm chip loose and pops it into the burner. Lines of code scroll across the screen as he looks for the one he seeks. About half way down, he begins to recognize the output codes for moon scanning when an idea arises. Hm, yeah, we can modify this to act as a loose transmitter. Oh this could be fun, chase the brok'int. Let's see if the hounds take the bait.
He adds several dozen lines of code to replace the moon characteristics reports and returns the chip to it's slot. He continues to search the unit until he finds the canned response subassembly. He pulls it and begins making recordings. HA, sounds like a bunch of rookies on a fleet op, lousy comm discipline and lots of veiled references. Yeah this should pique their interest. He replaces the unit and closes the hatch, marking the outside with the U'K fist, then moves on to the next one. Five probes, five different message streams, five different profiles. Yeah, this is gonna be interesting.
As he returns to his couch, the comms chime....incoming.

Excellent..let the chase begin. A quick acknowledgment burst and Sardoc warps to the farthest gate and drope his first probe, uncloaking only long enough to drop and cloak. Next stop, Safe Spot #1 - a deadspace complex destroyed gate ... again, uncloak and drop. As he activates the first probe, he moves to his third position. Suddenly the open comm channel bursts into activity....Sardoc smiles...so far so good.

Sardoc notes high energy bursts around Planet 7. Long range scans show the Amarr fleet moving away at high speed. He commands the probe to fly to a predetermined coordinate and self destruct, all the while shutting comm channel chatter in a predefined sequence.
Probe 3 drops at Planet 2 Moon 4, a habitable moon of a gas giant. The probe takes a low orbit and Sardoc activates probe 2. Surprise, this one has comms too, but also warp signatures. As probe 1 dies, 2 comes up and he notes more movement from the Amarr - they've taken the bait. Hated to strip those last 3 Combs, they are expensive...but you do what you must. The sig radius spoof is working and they must think they are running into a huge fleet; he notes the power signature of weapons hot. Probe 2 buries itself in the debris field of the ruined gate, the gasses and wreckage foiling any attempt to probe with sensors. They'll have to hunt this down, let's see of their mettle meets their bravado.
As he moves to his fourth position, he comms the fleet for status.

On the planet surface Poreuomai is making his way through the thick forest. Kind of reminds him of the ones he knew on that planet where he first ventured into space so long ago. What was it's name again? Nevermind, must find the vehicle.
Every now and then he stops and listens, but he is indeed alone in this wilderness, apart from the wild life of course.
At last the homing beacon gives him a firm direction. 500 yards that way.

Sardoc activates long range sensors to see Probe 2. Narrowing the bandwidth, he finds the probe and only 1 recon and a BC nearby. The rest of the fleet is nowhere to be found.
"Crap, well, this isn't optimal by any stretch. Let's see how a crippled flyer sounds on comms." He commands the second probe to fly off in the direction of probe 3 and at the same time, activates that probe. Emergency channel flares with a distress call in the Director's voice (those late night poker game recordings come in handy...chuckle) and sensors suddenly show an atmospheric flyer in distress close to the edge of space. Sardoc has moved well out of range, almost to the edge of his sensor grid. He watches, waiting for a response. Comms are quiet...too quiet. Damn, they sniffed out the bait.

With the failure of his probe spoof, there is only one last ruse to employ. Sardoc moves off to the outer reaches of the system, close to Planet 11. Making sure he has loaded the fuel correctly, he decloaks and activates the cyno field generator.
"Well, if this don't bring them running, nothing will! They HAVE to investigate and prepare to defend on the chance this is real. NO ONE ignores a cyno field. Besides, this clone was getting a little ripe."

Settling into his pod for the final confrontation, he laughs, realizing all he has is a probe launcher and a self destruct switch. Both are about as useful as his drive while the cyno is going. "Well" he thinks "I can pop my last probe, the one with the fleet signatures. At least they gotta send one decent ship to investigate. Most likely they will all jump in and pound me to trash. But it will buy time. Reinforcements are incoming; I promised time and that's what I will deliver."
Space fills with the fleet signatures he programmed into the last probe as he waits for the arrival of the Amarr......

Poreuomai finally reaches the landing site. What he sees is a typical Minmatar contraption. 'If the Breacher frigate is "little more than a fragile scrapheap" then this modified vehicle is ... well ... at least they used lots of duct tape', he chuckles to himself.
Poreuomai climbs inside and starts up the engines. He wonders whether anyone had tested this machine but then dismisses the thought. No, of course not, there was no time.
The reassuring whine of the thrusters fills the ****pit as the vehicle gently leaves the ground. Designed to hover at a hight of 1m, Poreuomai wonders if it really is a good idea to try and reach a low orbit height of 1000KM in this thing. Remembering that he has no choice, he hits the accelerator.
After clearing the tree-tops he is catapulted towards the low lying clouds. Looking back he sees the ground rapidly disapear below him. Grey mist envelops his craft and a few minutes later he can see stars in the darkening sky. The vehicle is shaking violently and Poreuomai says a prayer to an old tribal god. Then there is peace. The atmosphere is below him and in space there is neither turbulence nor sound.
Most of the fuel is now spent and Poreuomai frantically tries to locate his cheetah on the scanner (or whatever it is they grafted into the dashboard). There, got it, not far to go now.
At last he reaches his cheetah and climbs into his pod. It feels good to be 'online' again. His ship sets a course for home.

The clone vat sloshes it's contents onto the screened floor as Sardoc awakes from his sudden transformation, limbs flailing in the last moments of death. He sits up in the thick liquid, coughing the last remnants from his lungs, hands running thru his hair and over his face, pushing the thick goo of lifesaving liquid away so he can see and breathe. He sees a tech coming towards him, one arm holding a towel, the other a terminal pad.
"Hm" she says, "Busy night I see. You're the third in the last hour. Name?" His voice rasps "Sardoc". "Corp?" she ask. "UARM. You gonna stand there and stare or do I get a towel?" She hands him the towel slowly, enjoying the sight of the large Brutor frame before her. "So what's been going on? Been suddenly busy...." She leaves the question hanging in the air. Sardoc looks at her, hair still dripping, wraps the towel around his waist as he steps from the vat and says "The less you know the better. I need a comp, got one close by?" "Other side of the shower room, no comp until you get clean, you know how these chemicals crap up the gear. Comp in the break room on the other side. Clothing in the locker room, you know the drill." She smiles as she walks away. Admiring the curve of her behind, he makes his way to a quick hot shower and clean gear. In the break room, the standard mug of enrichment ale awaits him. Ale, yeah that's a joke, tastes more like sewer water, but it helps clear the head.
Drink in hand he moves to the comp, types in his credentials and checks mission status. Reading the AAR, he is pleased to see that Pour made it safely out of Provi; 4 ships down, 5 Amarr taken, including that nasty Navy Issue Apoc. Not a bad tradeoff, that will cost them some ISK to replace. He smiles as he sips his drink. The casualty list is next and his name heads the list. Someday, I'll be something other than a victim. But for now, it's all good. Only three others made the short trip home, and he hears them coming out of the locker room, laughing about their kills and deaths. A good day to die for sure, a better way to live. At least he had the freedom denied his slave brothers, to die in a way that benefited all. He logs out and heads to his quarters, the mandatory 24 hour rest calling his name.
