Defender missiles seems to be partly broken in the 1077 patch. If you're lucky enough to send them off at the right moment they might actually do some good, but if they start circling the ship they will miss any incoming missile by exploding too late. Are they supposed to be like this or is this a bug? Also, their miss rate seems pretty high even when they can lock onto a incoming missile.

The defender also seam to like to target any ship close to you if it can't find any missile to target.

Yes, defender missiles have never and will not in the immediate future switch targets if the one they were launched at is no longer around for them to hit. This is something we are keeping in mind to possibly change when it is feasible to do so.
For now, just keep in mind that these missiles are not a perfect weapon and have operational quirks to keep in mind :) -- Richard CCP Programmer. Anything said above is not the official line, but my own take or opinion. |

I just fired 30 defender missiles against a few missle cruisers, every single of them actually hit my own ship.

Even if they can't switch targets, they can only rarely hit the targets they DO target. I've seen them go after missiles in a straight line, then making a curve to intercept the incoming missile, just so it can explode at the wrong moment. They are broken.

Please, some sort of machinegun AMS system is a necessity. It doesn't need to be dirt-cheap, it just needs to be effective!

same with me, launched at least 20 defenders, not a single one hit. they actually were only flying around my ship, even if an incoming missile was less than 10km away |

i find that amuseing, considering there's a missle TODAY
15000 years before this game takes place
that can pick up it's own target..
called a HARM anti radiation missle..
it fires, and can orbit untill it runs out of fuel, and pick up any ground based radar system and attack
funny that in 15000 years people are closer to brain dead

I believe the Defender missles are based on Amarr technology thus the "interesting" behaviour. :)

lickspittle: Defenders are almost useless now. They will only actually get an enemy missile if you are perfectly lined up with the interception path of the incoming missile and fire at the right time.
I did many tests with them, and they seem to act more like very stupid FoF missiles. For one, they should just blow up themselves if their first target is destroyed, instead of homing to whatever is closer to it (including cargos and friendly ships).
I mean common, how hard can it be? Defender missiles are supposed to go for missiles, not ships!? I can use FoF missiles to do that.
No seriously, they are too fast and not agile enough, liks most other fast missiles actually. Rockets and Light attack missiles are having a hard time to home sometimes, and just keep orbiting a target for many seconds like a bunch of wasps and even blow themselves up... Not very usefull now.

I was sitting still. Facing away from NPC pirates. 8 for 8 EVERY defender I launched would shoot out, do a 180 turn and run into me doing 40 (yes 40, why 40 when it says they do 10? NO idea) points of damage. That's some "quirk." My defenders are in the hangar, they're useless right now.

i know this isnt' the right topic but wish they put tractor beams in the game.. it can have multiple functions.. so it wont be such a bad item... it can be applied for mining for the sake of going between the asteroids.. since u guys want to make it realistic than to phase through.. which i didn't mind..instead of getting stuck.. another way is it can enhance... chances per hit... if u use it on an attacking ship.. to balance this u can make it as one target.. and put stuff thats probly out already to prevent this effect..and it dont have to be strong enough to preven warp. of course...
