How do I do it? I can run it, but it tells me I can only run a single trial or subscription account

You can't run a trial account with a full account. You need multiple paid accounts.

Ok... So once I get two paid accounts what next? Two installations of EVE? (same HD, different folder) Switch between two windows user accounts?

You only need a single install, you can run as many instances as your computer can handle (and as many accounts as you have). I would recommend windowed clients, so that switch time between clients is minimal... or, if you have a very large monitor (or multiple monitors) you can see both (or all three, or... well, you get the idea) at the same time.

While you CAN use a single install I would recommend against it as you tend to share certain settings and it sometimes might slow down due to shared files. Here's what I did;
- make a copy of the EVE folder (call it EVE-2 or whatever) - make a link to both exe files on your desktop and add "/end /LUA:OFF" to the commandline of both of them, this stops the client from storing settings in a predetermined CCP folder but rather dumps it into the client folder itself. Easier to control and again, you share less files with the other client. - change the interface color for each account so you know which one you're using (my Minnie acc is dark red, gallente one is light blue, Caldari one is darker blue and my hauler acc is grey) - set clients to windowed mode and change the resolution to something that easily fits, so you can cascade both windows. If you have an Nvidea card you can make some custom resolution in the driver itself to suit your needs, if you have an ATI card you're fekked and have to do with what's offered.

You don't need the /end /lua:off switch anymore. Actually, it's discouraged to use it nowadays. Different install drives/directories get SEPARATE cache/settings folders already by default since a good while back.

I like clearing my cache etc right from the gamefolder itself as it makes for less mistakes and is more tidy. There is/can be an issue performancewise if both clients try to write to the same file, not that this happens much but again; separating them makes things a lot easier and managable.

This may help
I use one install and point my userprofile at either a RAM disk or a seperate disk [I use both] I have batch files setup for each character [and new icons] and a couple of character have a coouple of batchfiles this means I can have seperate settings for each [i.e. loading my production alt will not have his S&I values reset by anohter character, Jita Alt - has display setup difierntly for use] 0.0, scanning , market , industry etc...

On the hardware side, you just have to experiment with how well your system runs EVE.
I have 3 different computers that will play the game. Two are older systems that run the Classic Client OK in two instances but ONLY if I alt tab between them while running in full screen mode. These systems will run two instances windowed by lag terribly. The new system can run 3 instances of the Premium client in windows. Doing this produces noticeable lag but it's not that bad.
Now here it depends on what you are doing. If you're semi-AFK mining in and industrial ... you aren't putting a lot of strain on the system and it will run well enough to accomplish your purpose. If you're running a difficult mission ... then it becomes less of a good idea. If you're in a big fleet battle that lags no matter what you do ... then multiple clients per computer ... may not be such a good idea.
There's no way anyone else can tell you what your system will do. You just need to experiment and see. Just try to think up experiments that won't get your ships blown up.

Edited by: Agent Unknown on 26/02/2009 01:19:57 The glorious feature of Windows: caching. Frequently used files are cached in RAM for quick access, so you will notice zero performance loss, except maybe when you are starting both clients at the same time.
I run two clients on maximum settings (premium) from the same install folder. Oddly enough, when running 2 clients only one of them crashes at random...eh...wha?
Anywho, no lag on this end. As it turns out, separate installs can in fact lower performance since your hard drive has to travel to read from each area it's installed in, which means more latency (we're talking milliseconds here, but yeah...)
tl;dr version: Same folder, multiple clients = OK. Settings are per-user, not per-folder, including overview settings. ----------------------------------- "What can go wrong, will go wrong." |
