Edited by: Super Whopper on 25/02/2009 15:06:34 Very interesting but statistics can be made to fit theories and idea's, that's what statistics are for.
The speaker says that there is hardly a gap between the rich and the poor and then goes on to prove himself wrong, well done to him.
What this does mean is that research needs to be done into this by the Red Cross, Medicine Sans Frontier and other humanitarian organisations who will look at the data because he has very little about the data he talks about. He is generalising and is only using data that is widely available, which is from large cities only. Once we take the country side of the 'poorer' countries into account the data changes greatly.
This is why statistics are not effective and can't be used as undeniable scientific data. I assume his entire goal is to convince people in the Western world not to feel guilty about exploiting the poor.
This didn't blow my mind, this made me close the presentation because of the nonsense he was talking about.

Do you happen to take World Geography 220 at Central CT state? My professor brought this up yesterday, and I could swear there was another conveniently timed issue that was brought up form the same class earlier in the semester "I don't remember if it was you who brought it up". _______________

I disagree with SuperWhopper, I think the guy was making the point that without detailed analysis of statistics, we run the risk of misallocating resources. His students has preconceived notions which would have resulted in great waste had they been in a position to influence policy. He makes an excellent point.

Maybe, maybe not. From his presentation I conclude that the poor aren't that poor as there're rich countries in Asia and even Afrika, that children in poor countries live much longer so we can run around in our Adidas and Nike shoes without feeling bad that they were sown by five year olds.
Had he presented his data better it would have made more sense. He discreditted himself, even if his goal was just to present statistics. But as data can be moulded he makes empty claims, unless you're going to go to the countryside of Veitnam, where the majority of people live and tell them that their children live longer because the data you have at hand, which mostly excludes them, says so.

He did break down a couple of countries into quartiles to make the point that there were massive disparities of wealth in there (eg South Africa, if I recall correctly). In fact, graphically, they made the differences between individual countries seem tame in comparison. So the city vs country bit was in there, even if not explicitly stated.

Well, from the presentation, the conclusions appear to me to be that:
1. People today, including students who you'd expect to be taught more recent information, have preconceived ideas about developed and developing countries, which are decades out of date.
2. There's some evidence to show that fertility rates, child survival and income are all linked, so any aid programmes that look at them in isolation aren't going to do too well.
3. Looking at things on a regional basis is extremely misleading. Talking about "problems in Africa" is unhelpful. The variations within the countries mean that aid policies have to have context. I get the impression this isn't happening.
4. There's a lot of publicly funded research and statistics gathering going on, but the data produced is not very accessible, and not shared. Which is a waste of the public funds, tbh.
5. Increasing accessibility and sharing of the data will help to create more informed and effective policies and actions.

Whopper, I don't believe the man has any sort of agenda or wants to legitimise anything. As Shirley pointed out nicely he merely concludes, based on a new way of looking at available data, that the current way in which developing nations are being treated may not be to the most benefit of them.
Great discrepancies occur within continents and nations, so a 'one size fits all' solution does not exist. This however is the way many politicians and students view the issues, and that way of thinking deserves a change.
