My question is...
What role will ancestries play in the new expansion?

Ancestries do not play the role they used to in character creation.
They still, however, determine which NPC corp you will remain in once you leave a player corp. That'll be the sole function, other than flavor.

Nope, sorry, not even that... the bloodline (12 total, 3 for each of the 4 races) determines the NPC corp you get shoved in afterwards, all three ancestries in the same bloodline end up in the same NPC corp.
