Hey
race: Gallente
Just started playing two weeks ago and my tristan is seeming a bit limited. I have 3mil isk and was looking at the celetis for the combo of turret/launchers/drones.
What do people think?
I been building up my skills plus getting all the certificates to fly it.

I would go for the vexor or possibly thorax myself. On another topic, I finally removed that annoying sentence in my signature.

The celestis is pretty weak unless you're using it as a disposable damp platform. Also, split weapons suck = (.
Vexor or Rax would be much better for you, even though they both are turret ships (I know most of the vexors DPS comes from drones, but it doesn't use its highs for missiles so its a turret ship in that sense.)

The Tristan isnt that limited its just that to get it to work you need good turret skills (railgun specialization) and either good rocket skills or missile skills. and ofc a t2 light drone in it.
Something less skill intensive is the blaster incursus, just learn good blaster skills, and good navigation skills and your good to go.

As a new player you want to focus on one weapon system at a time so you can become efficient.
As gallente, that means hybrid guns (blasters for close range, rail guns for long range).
You also need to train drones (which many might consider a weapon system in and of itself).
The easiest cruiser to get into early on is the vexor, since you can focus on using your drones to do your fighting, and "play safe" with the ship by focusing on the tank.
So, my suggestion is get a Vexor. Focus your training around drones and increasing your tank, which should make you able to do missions easily. Later on when drone skills are good and tank skills are good, you can start focusing on gunnery more extensively.
But training tank+drones+guns+missiles all at once will make you basically suck with all 4. Eve is like wine - it takes time to become good. -------------------------------------------------- "Every complex problem has a solution which is easy, neat and wrong!" |

Thanks for your replies everyone.
I should have also mentioned that I currently run missions and will be looking to do some FW in the next couple of weeks when I get my new pc. Also will look at pvp at some stage too, perhaps with one of the aussie corps link anzac.
I currently have two 150mm rail, a rocket launcher and missile launcher fitted. Still getting the feel for the weapons. Mostly everything I use is dropped by pirates in missions. Its good to live off the land :)
I liked the feel of missles as it does allows you to shoot from a distance.
But I think the vexor is the way to go as I really like the drones angle. The celetis had a mix of all but judging from the comments its not the best.

If you really like missiles so much you might consider to go for Caldari ships. Gallente do not have any decent missile platform. But if you like drones like me you should invest your skills there. Some people will tell you that drones are bad for pvp - trust me, they do not really know what they're talking about

And later you can progress to the Dominix, wich is an awsome mission boat (lvl 4 missions), aswell as a capable PVP shipp.
ps. Dont forgett to train learning skills! Gett EVEmon and sett up a plan for your training, to streamline it more efficient! :)

You get a lot of the same advantages from drones tbh.
With good skills and whatnot the range envelope for missions is pretty similar between a Vexor and a Caracal.
You're also not suffering from tracking issues and stuff like with guns.
So stick with the Vex. It's a great choice for what you want.

Looks like I will get some more isk together and get a vexor. Go for the drones and long range guns. Plus I also will look at he salvage angle, some missions the loot was worth more then the contract plus bonus.
I really liked having the missiles for range but I guess the vexor drones and better guns/ammo should fix that.
I got evemon the second day I played :) Its not bad with its suggestions like training the learning skills first. Can't wait for the skill queue.

If you're going to train drones at all, just train drones for now until you've got about a mil SP in them, that should get you T2 small/mediums with decent support skills ( and if you never go for bigger drones, is about all you really need ). Vexor will need some tank skills, but thankfully armour tanking isn't that expensive in SP. Then fit it with a couple of salvagers, couple of tractors, a drone link aug, and some random gun to pull aggro, and you've got an all in one package for level 2s while you train other things. Actually you can do the same with a Myrm with the same drone skills & get an effective level 3 boat too.
Don't just go by certificates either, quite a few make you train skills you don't really need ( or at least don't need that high ).

@Von Kapiche - I think I will follow everything you just said, it sounds like the way I want to go. I might need a warp stabiliser to at least get away from blaster boats.
What do people think about cloaks?

Unless you are either training to fly cov-ops/Recons or planning on Ninja-Ratting in 0.0 they aren't really worth it. This is especially true since you are new and they are a bit skill intensive, SPs you could be putting elsewhere for a more immediate and general purpose reward.
Something that hasn't been brought up yet, re: your tristan vs. a Vexor for L2s and such, you might consider getting an Ishkur. The training time is fairly low and you already know how frigates work from flying your Tristan. Ishkurs can also pack a nice selection of drones and their resists and such are great for missioning. Enyos work well also, though they are just blaster boats for missioning and plexing and only allow one small drone.
The other nice feature about the T2 frigates is that with good skills in the future, you can rat and plex in 0.0
The problem for you right now would be their expense

I agree with everyone else here in saying that the vexor will be much better then the celestis for missions. I myself used the vexor and loved it =) brush up your drone skills and focus on tank and bam! lvl 2 missions are in the bag
