I'm thinking of putting my dominix on hold and training for the Taranis interceptor first, as a cheap(er) disposable option for when i need it.
The overall setup is pretty obvious, its the speed enhancer that i'm not sure on.Would a taranis fitted with a single YS-8 Hydro AB (cruiser sized) be fast enough to get reasonable protection against Battleships?
Or should i go for MWD's?

Both give enough speed.
What the question is, is what else you're gonna try and fit. a 10Mn Ab takes a little more grid after all.

at the moment AFAIK the 10mn AB is better, but the different sized modules (frig/Cruiser/BS) are going to be changed so you will not be able to fit a cruiser module on a frig... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

How does an MWD perform in orbit?not much use in having a blaster gunboat if you can't stay in orbit at a high enough speed.. Besides, I'm still pretty green with only 2 million skillpoints and i havn't finished working on MWD's yet..So obviously I havn't been able to test it myself. :)
And if they are restricting class usage then the 10 MegaNewton afterburner idea goes straight outtha the window.

1. they are restricting modules to their class, tho i dont expect it within the next few weeks.
2. Both modules have trouble orbiting at ranges of 5km and below. Manual orbit can help but is still hard to maintain right. Practice this against a frigate or cruiser that's webbed but uses one or two MWD's to simulate what you'll be up against.
If you're going for a gunboat inty (taranis), you are looking mainly at attacking other inty's and frigates or indies. You won't need to orbit those long before they die so in that case the problem is reduced for you.
Using a taranis against a cruiser is something else, since the cruiser has a nice chance of hitting you, let alone using drones. Large smartbombs will deal with your taranis effectively once you get within 5km, so BS's are even harder on your ship.
Frigs should be your target, and as said, those will be easy in a taranis, with or without orbiting.

10mn ab's are really only good for the missile ships, unless you fit only the smallest weapon type(electron blasters). theres almost no way you would fit 3 neutrons and a 10mnab. you need 3 micro aux's to do it, and then you have 5 grid leftover(with eng5). then you will pretty much have to use cap chargers in those remaining mids unless you have great cap skills. you might find a respectable setup with 2 micro aux's and ions..
the mwd is by far the easier fit, and allows you to have much more fun/damaging setups. of course you will possibly be killed faster. but mwd's are not that bad, i can orbit a cruiser with electron blasters at 5k and not get hit(in a slow friggin punisher no less). and against other frigs im not sure if it even makes a difference. its those approaches from 100k out that will hurt.
anybody know if shooting at a target thats larger than your turrets sig radius make a difference?

Yay friggies will be worthless again....
Frigates are too easy to kill as is, take away the only worthwhile defense (MWD sig increase means you get hit real easy by anything other than a battleship at close range) and we'll all be back in battleships.
Really hope its not true.

What you on about ?
Frigs won't be worthless at all, and no an MWD doesnt make you 'easy' to hit by anything but a battleship.
The sig size increase offsets the speed increase. This still leaves the effect of turret accuracy nerf versus smaller targets.
Result, frigs will be a bit easier to hit (fine change), but nowhere near easy to hit for anything but another frig. And with drones much less effective frigs again get the good end of a patch here.
Oh, and i dont mind. All shipclasses are usefull now.

Yea i'm a bit miffed about it aswell.. Must be the hordes of indy's/friggy's who feel the 1% chance of getting caught out in a non insta jump/non logoff situation is unbearable. /sarcasm off

Drones still kill inty just as fast as before, heavy drones are no exception.
Smartbomb hasnt done less dmg and inty hasnt gotten more hp, 2 maybe 3 max blasts of a large smartbomb and your toast.
I heard a missle change comming where it does not mather how fast you go, but the missle wil always catch your frigate/interceptor. Where you first had to fit webifier, heavy cap draining equipment and drones, you now just have to put 1 or 2 missle racks on and your practical imune in your battleship against frigate raiders. So what it takes you 3x more missles now than you did before, future plans will get you 100% hit on a frigate in any case and thats what no frigate can cope with.
What are we going back to?
Tank your ship the best way possible, forget about sacrificing 2 months of skill training for effective cap usage on your 10mn ab's / 100mn ab's, forget about having to sacrifice repair systems because it doesnt fit and use pure powercore enhancers to have it all on 1 ship.
So if your planning now to use 10mn ab, use it but dont ever train for it. Dont spend 2 months optimizing skills for afterburners who will be useless after next patch, and when the shi... erhm patch hits the fan just switch over to tanking like everyone else is going to. - - -
