hi - my corp is thinking of putting a shadow control tower in a quiet 0.4 system we've found. i have two questions -
1. are there things that we would be able to do in a .3 or lower system that we won't be able to do in .4?
2. what should we put up for defenses? I have played with MyPOS and come up with the configuration below, but was hoping to get input from people who knew more about POS defense -
3 x Cruise Missile Battery 2 x Energy Neutralizing Battery 3 x Large Artillery Battery 2 x Large AutoCanon Battery 2 x Sensor Dampening Battery 1 x Stasis Dampening Battery 2 x Torpedo Battery 1 x Tracking Array
thanks in advance

Well I can tell you right off the back... Do not use missile batteries. They are by far the worst defence for a POS period. Reason being the range is terrible, and they use CPU so when the tower hits reinforced mode your defences go too. For a shadow tower I'd recommend artilliary and autocannon batteries. I perfer laser batteries most, but they only work well with amarr/blood/sansha towers.

thank you for the reply, changing my config now :)

Don't forget you still need corp to faction standings in 0.4 so you might as well just put a pos in 0.5 or 0.3 if you can't be bothered with standings. --

thank you, that was something we had considered - however, i'm still curious if there's anything we can do in a 0.3 or lower that we can't do in a 0.4?

Yep, the only thing you can do in 0.4 that you can't do in high sec is anchor an X-Large Assembly array. 0.4 POSs are pointless unless it's for 0.0 logistics. --

Don't forget ECMs and Shield Hardeners, enough of those would make a dread pilot cry.

This. 0.4 POS's are only worth having if you have a really really good reason that it has to be that system.

ECM has no effect on a sieged dread.

I was going to ask about that, it would hurt the BS support fleet but that would mean having a fleet there to threaten the dreads in the first place.
To the OP, keep it cheap and don't become attached to it. If someone comes to knock it down add up the cost to defend vs just letting them kill it.
Defence fleets cost massive isk so be sure its worth it.
PS You need to have a few points and webs on that tower as well.

Oh yeah, When attacking a tower, the first mod that anyone will shoot will be the warp disruption batteries typically, that's the only thing that could prevent their cap ships from withdrawing unless you have a very good sized fleet, so make sure you have at least two of them, even a third. Sensor Dampening batteries are really not much good, they don't effect dreads in siege, and aren't going to do a heap to a ship that is close and has a lock anyway (and since they take ages to lock, every ship is going to lock the tower first pretty much anyway).
You can setup a tower that is good at killing capitals, or good at killing a support fleet, you can try both but you won't be as good at either.

These are always fun (if you have grid). Ideally you want to use hardeners the raise your tower's 0% resists up.
But hell if you put enough of them on there you anything other than a cap fleet would die of boredom and and shoot each other.

this, lots and lots of hardeners, with offlined guns, more guns.. bigger guns.. better guns! (sorry had to put that BSG reference in there)
the idea is to make sure that the cap fleet knows its proabably not worth thier time, you dont want to kill them you wont to make sure they get bored to death, or at least if they do attack it wont be a walk in the park. you want the scout of thiers who first discovers your pos to say "**** that" and move on to the next potential target
