Why ?
Seriously. Is it like a visible 'im a member of the club' thing ? Like big boots with lots of chains on ?
Im currently of the thinking that it signifies that if you also own a neckbeard you could talk to them and learn the name of there level 80 'whuteva' in WoW, and play dungeons and dragons on the train.

Is that a neckbeard?
I dunno. I don't ever mess with my hair at all. I have long hair, full hair on the sides of my face, mustache, the whole deal. I guess technically there's hair on my chin down to meet my neck, but I don't feel like a 'neck beard'. To me that implies someone has intentionally shaved or trimmed the rest. *Charges Twilight fans with Ka-bar* -Surfin's PlunderBunny LIIIIIIIIIIINNEEEEE PIIIEEEECCCCEEE!!!!!!! -Taedrin Using relativity to irrational numbers is smart -rodyas I no longer believe we landed on the moon. -Atticus Fynch

Dont get me wrong.
You wanna be purple with yellow spots and hair in a mohican down to your knees from your balls - all good with me.
Just wanted to know the reason or significance of it. BTW to me a neckbeard is a guy that shaves the front of his face, cheeks, lips, front facing chin but leaves the underside chin and cheeks and neck all hairy.

A properly trimmed beard means no hair on the neck.
Thus a "neckbeard" is meant to refer to someone whose game involvement or lack of involvement in real life means they don't shave or often.
I shave only once a week, and frankly have a real neckbeard the rest of the time. I shave for the weekend, but why should I demonstrate any further grooming for coworkers? They are a bunch of doods anyway.

I get those sideways-growing "terrorist bomber" whiskers and can't shave every day or I'll bleed, and I can't grow out a real beard or my face will look like a poodle with it's throat cut.
Some nice stable straight-out stubble would be a blessing to me. |

Herzog can't buy one. Well, I propose a Kickstarter fundraising plan to help Herzog buy a real shaver, Im willing to pledge 5$ if it will be for the betterment of fellow capsuleers. Inner Sayings of BrujoLoco: http://eve-files.com/sig/brujoloco |

Seriously thinking this, and after years of playing D&D and Diablo at lan parties back in the day, I think it boils down to guys not bothering enough to actually shave and believing en masse their beard makes them more manly, of sorts.
You know, when I moved to Panama, and discovered a new group of roleplaying guys, it shocked me to see how in a diff country, with diff language use, diff customs and totally diff history, people in the geek scene were more or less, the same!
I think its like a mindset, an attitude towards life of not caring much and just enjoying being who they are, even if their social manners and lack of proper grooming are into question, since what is "proper" is relative, yet we all tend to categorize as part of human nature.
Up to this day I can refer to some of my players as Joe 2, Luke 2, and MP 2 and Jon-Gary hybrid 1 for easy referral when comparing them to earlier players for simple mnemotechnic categorization.
Its like you can identify a sub-culture by their trappings, in this case, the way they deal with their facial hair. Inner Sayings of BrujoLoco: http://eve-files.com/sig/brujoloco |

*sigh*
I had a Braun electric shaver that I got in Germany for real cheap, but in the US it was a $200 shaver. That was the only thing I could use every day without troubles. That thing rocked and it took 10 years for it to die. The Germans really know how to make a shaver.
As for electrolysis - I knew of a place in New York that had a special for men "monobrow, nose, and ears" for some cheap price. Monobrow control can be more important than neckbeard control actually. A neckbeard makes you look like you know about computers and MMOs, a monobrow makes you look like you ate your siblings.
Once when my GF was waxing I requested some quick monobrow control and she tore half and eyebrow off and started laughing and bolted. Things did not go well. I think she was raised by wild parrots.
As for replacing the dead Braun, it's an expensive unit but over the past few years I kind of like the defoliating effect of the razor. If I could only keep the neck hair down the itching would not be so bad then I can look like Grizzly Adams (age check: who knows who that is without having to look it up?)

For unibrow control I use a state of the art piece of high tech equipment. It's called a tweezer
My favorite razor for shaving is the straight razor. Keep it razor sharp (haha) and it gives the smoothest shave possible. Though if you slip you could kill yourself with it. Risk vs reward |

I don't know who this Kane man is but he is a bad example and I will tell you why.
That level of sexiness makes anything look good. For god sakes I bet the man could raise an Army, Destroy the UN, instill Fascism across the third world and worship rocks and he would still look good.
Bad example. |
