Pulses are short range. Beams are long range.
Though generally energy weapons are more of a mid-range weapon. With pulse lasers having a considerably longer range than most short range weapons (Especially with T2 long range ammo (Scorch)) and beam lasers having a somewhat shorter range than most long range weapons.
you also have a very small fall-off range compared to pretty much any other weapon, so damage will drop off very quickly if ships move away from you without switching crystals.

General rule of thumb (barring sniper setups).
Pulse = PvP Beam = PvE
Pulse benefits are good tracking speeds and high rate of fire, in addition to lower Cap usage and easier fitting requirements. Drawback is limited range (in comparison to beams, artillery, railguns and missiles).
Beam benefits are long range, and that's pretty much it.
Reason you prefer beams in missions is because kiting and range makes it easy to instapop smaller ships and easier to hit any ship due to the low transversal speed at long ranges.
Pulses are awesome in pvp due to the high tracking speeds combined with good range and good damage.
That said, a very standard setup for Amarr pilots flying battleships in L4 missions is to train up for T2 Mega Pulses and using Scorch crystals. This gives you 55-75km range on your pulse lasers, depending on your skills. -------------------------------------------------- "Every complex problem has a solution which is easy, neat and wrong!" |

Lasers 101: Pulse advantages: DPS Tracking Fitting Cap use
Beam advantages: Range
Both have the same alpha, pulse just fire faster. Beams don't generally get used in PVP outside of sniping fits because pulse + scorch gives you all the range you need. __________________________________
