Edited by: Prodigiosus Proditio on 02/03/2009 17:42:59 ok, i realise that i'm probably being a stupid noobie but i was just doing a run from one place to another and i stupidly had myself set to autopilot - my route took me through Rancer and it was like a quick trip through hell. obviously, i lost my ship (and learned a valuable lesson) but looking at some of the stats on the map, it would seem like Rancer is ALWAYS this bad - is that a fair assesment, or did i just try and go there at a bad time?
should i be adding Rancer to my auto-avoid list from now onwards?
thanks in advance

As a general note, pirates know how to use autopilot too. They will look at what systems the autopilot will tend to route people through and setup camp there.
Also, you shouldn't be on autopilot when traveling through low sec. Unless you are using warp to zero and are flying a fairly quick ship, you will die at the first gate camp or roaming gang you find. If you are going to try AFK travel then set autopilot to avoid all low sec systems, and don't carry anything valuable.
Using the autopilot is fine for basic navigation as long as you use WTZ and pay attention to what you are doing.

Thank you both for the replies - I totally realise my mistake now and feel rather stupid - I hadn't seen my autopilot was even taking me through low-sec - the over-confidence of a relatively new player, I suppose.
I have to say, however, that it really got my blood pumping! I haven't really enjoyed PVP in most games I've played but MAN, getting jumped really got my heart-racing!

Rancer can be pretty ugly even for more experienced people flying manually and being aware of what expects them there... let alone relatively new players that enter it because of the autopilot.

Thanks! Not feeling QUITE so dumb now - and after looking at some of the other boards, seems Rancer is a known hot-spot

Yea, Rancer is best to be avoided entirely. Then again autopilot in lowsec is NEVER wise.

Rancer is to gatecampers what Motsu and Dodixie are for Mission Runners.

Just out of curiosity ... does anyone know exactly why Rancor is as bad as it is?
I used to regularly run the Rancor gate in a shuttle to drop off and pick up blue prints (since the queue was much shorter) but finally decided I was pushing my luck, especially as the blue prints got more expensive. There was ALWAYS someone there. ALWAYS.
Looking at a map, trying to find a way around it (which I couldn't) I figured that it was a bottle neck and that was the reason for all the gate camps - but it also seemed that there were a lot of organized fights going on there between two groups of people. I kinda got the impression it was for turf rights. One group of gate campers fighting another?

It's the "quickest" auto pilot route from Rens to Jita.
